77th Area Traffic Collision Investigation 2/16/23 (MCIT 23-05)

** Effective January 1, 2024, the involved suspect's booking photos have been blurred out, in compliance with Assembly Bill (AB) 994, (amending California Penal Code (PC) Section 13655), which addresses the sharing of booking photos on social media by law enforcement.
Los Angeles; On February 16, 2023, around 7:43 p.m., 77th Division patrol officers were in the area of Main Street and Florence Avenue when they received a Lo Jack activation of a stolen vehicle. The vehicle was stolen earlier that day in the County of Los Angeles.
Officers observed the stolen vehicle, a black pick-up truck. Officers attempted to conduct an enforcement stop but the vehicle sped away. The truck continued eastbound on Florence Avenue to northbound San Pedro Avenue. Officers broadcast they were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle and requested three additional units due to the number of occupants inside the vehicle.
The stolen vehicle failed to stop for a red phased tri-light signal and collided with a Scion. The collision caused the Scion to collide with a tri-light signal. The stolen truck continued until it became disabled north of Gage Avenue, at which time the suspect and passenger of the stolen truck fled on foot. Responding officers arrived and detained both the suspect and passenger in the immediate area.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported the driver of the Scion to a local hospital where she is listed in critical condition.
The Multi-Disciplinary Collision Investigation Team (MCIT) responded to the scene to investigate the collision. Detectives canvassed the scene for surveillance cameras.
When the suspect was taken into custody, officers detected an odor of alcohol emitting from the suspects’ breath and observed some objective signs of intoxication. The suspect was later identified as 43-year-old Dashawn Sutton, a resident of Los Angeles.
Sutton was arrested and booked for Section 2800.3 VC “Evading Police Causing Serious Injuries or Death”; booking number 6554365.
