This movie doesn't have a whole lot of dialogue, but it doesn't need it. The soundtrack and the way the characters are animated with such emotion tells more of a story than words ever could have. It's a true masterpiece of a movie.

This movie was part of my childhood, and still easily in my top 10 animated films. Maybe even top 5. It's so unique, and has one of the best soundtracks of any animated movie I've seen. I have the entire soundtrack on my phone, and sometimes listen to it like I would any other music. The soundtrack is perfect at setting the mood of a scene and expressing the feelings of the characters. "Brothers Under the Sun", "Sound the Bugle", "You Can't Take Me", and "Get Off My Back" are some of my favourite pieces. "Sound the Bugle" in particular can make my cry even when I'm not watching the movie, and I'm just listening to it. The lyrics remind me of how I remember feeling at my lowest point I can remember. When I just wanted to lie down and give up. I didn't know how I could get through what I was dealing with, and I started thinking "What's the point of even trying? What am I getting out of bed for? There are probably people in this world who deserve all the good things I have more than me.". I hardly ate or slept, and was prone to crippling anxiety from university work that would leave me hyperventilating and shaking. I tried antidepressants for a while, but though they seemed to help at first, they eventually started to have the opposite effect and began to make things worse, so I had to stop. This depression hit me in the Fall of 2020, and got to its worst point in probably Winter or early Spring. I have since felt better, but I'm going to need a long break from university to recover. Now, whenever I hear the song, I remember how I felt before, and tears start flowing. Even before that, the lyrics have always had a strong impact on me. As you said, Sprit truly is a masterpiece.

Honestly I'm surprised this approach wasn't used more often for kids movies about animals, the narration basically just reiterates what happens on screen, but a kid can watch it and get a sense of what's happening, without needing to remember details from the dialogue. You could watch it in another language and still understand everything that happens. It's really cool, and having watched it as a young kid it's so well suited to movies for children.

    1) At some point in the movie during his race with the eagle, their shadows combine forming a Pegasus.

This is also one of the first (if not the first) cartoon movies to combine hand drawn and CGI flawlessly. Though its more noticeable now with the people, the 360 spin arounds with Spirit on the hill have at least 5 moments where he goes from CGI to hand drawn. Yeah. Wild stallions are crazy territorial. Stallions in general are nuts. It's why if a male horse is going to be used for anything other than breeding, they're gelded around a year. Makes them much, much calmer and easier to work with.
Edit: Yeah. That's why you gentle a horse, you don't break them. You earn their trust. It's an equal partnership. If you can get that, that horse will stick by you until the day you die.

They were taking a chance making a movie with so little dialogue, and probably assumed some kids would have trouble following it. But honestly, they probably could have gotten away without it. The lack of plot points introduced through dialogue you have to remember made it really easy to follow for me personally, as a kid, and I'm surprised more movies about animals didn't take a similar approach after this one.

As an equestrian, not only did they make perfectly depict what the horses were trying to communicate throughout the film, they did it pretty accurately too. When I rewatched it, I spent most of the movie thinking about I could totally see a horse responding that way in most of those situations.

This is the reality of many horses adventures. People track down wild horses and uses them for their own use. Breaks my heart because horses and other animals should not be treated with such disrespect. They should be treated with love and respect and realize that horses have hearts and souls, too. So let go of your pride and help the world instead of destroying it.

This movie is so underrated while having so much emotions and an intelligent story !
Fun fact, in the french dub, Spirit doesn't say "How we won back our freedom together", but "We won our battle for freedom". This has a deep sence in the way it says that they litteraly saved freedom of all horsed and native americans. But then you grow up and realise that riding a horse is the usual way to see a horse nowadays and what colonists did in America. It adds such a layer to the movie.

I love your view on horses, that they are not meant to be broken, but free
see, the native americans had great respect and love for nature, and thats the same view they had on horses: they wouldn't break them, but try to befriend them and let them free if they couldn't. That's beautifully represented in this movie
Nowourdays the mentality and tecnique to tame a horse without breaking it is more and more common. look it up 'cause is really cool!

Fyi to everyone in this comment thread, the Netflix show and the movie being released is Spirit and Rain's son, Spirit (Jr). Basically DW's cop out to not have angry fans coming at them, but it makes sense because in the show the people are living in a little more civilized towns instead of just the wild west, so it's obvious some time has passed. As well as, the Spirit in the show and movie has a white stripe down his nose, and as we all know Spirit doesn't have the white stripe on his nose. So canonically, the show and new movie is Spirit's son.

6:49 - having had this kinda happen to me, it's actually harder to fall away from the horse if the horse is falling down. I was riding a 3 year old, oddly enough the same colour as spirit here. He was just a baby and was kinda ignoring/didn't understand when I was trying to correct his balance and he slipped and fell over. I went with him and he kinda crushed one leg. I wasn't unseated in the slightest, but I dislodged myself before I could get hurt if he panicked.
This is why getting your foot caught in a stirrup with falls and stuff can actually be really bad, or if a horse falls without you falling clear and it becomes a rotational.
BTW, I and the horse was fine. they shouldn't actually in legal terms have had me riding a horse that had only been broken for a couple of weeks since I was a paying client, but I got to ride loads of really young or crappy horses which helped me learn a lot more than riding nice push button horses.

The level of detail in this movie is incredible. Just down to the length of his main SLOWLY getting longer to indicate the amount of time that's passed.
Sound the bugle is also probably one of the darkest/most powerful songs in any kids movie.
"if you lose yourself, your courage soon will follow. so be strong tonight" That line alone gets me every time.
but i think one of the most amazing things about the movie is how it manages to tell such a powerful story with no little words
