That's not true. The US rule is 200 feet is the limit unless you go through the engineering and licensing procedures that apply to commercial towers. However, that is a maximium limit, based on the tower's distance from commercial airports with runways of specific lengths. I have 2 friends who live in rural MI with 198 foot towers in their fields behind their houses. I know this because I helped erect the towers. As for me, I now live in Boulder, CO and can either drive 40 minutes and set up at a friend's place on a ridge at 9,300 feet elevation, or I can just park my van up on the Peak to Peak Highway at 9,000 feet looking out 100 miles to the north, south, and east. Or I can just drive 10 minutes from home and be at about 8,000 feet, 2,000 feet above the High Plains. I'm in ham Heaven.
