Much respect to the Indians who contributed to the success of Jamaica’s society from the medical field, music, sports, government, etc...
🇮🇳
But how east indians contributed to medical engg? I mean they were born like other in jamica so everyone contributed. Its now that mainland indians are ruling usa uk europe in IT services agro medicine etc .

I’m so glad they took time to honor Indians and their contribution to Jamaican and the Jamaican culture. Jamaica wouldn’t be what it is culturally without the Indians. We Jamaicans are a culturally diverse people, a proud people. I’m part Indian myself but mostly of African ancestry. We are truly, OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE’. So glad they preserve their language and Indian heritage as Jamaicans.🤗❤️
what exactly is their influence in Jamaica? because most of the culture is derived from Africa.
@@mariegold3906 The conversation was about INDIAN(not African) and it’s influence on the Jamaican culture. I understand the ‘what-about-Africa innuendo. I never said Africa didn’t influence the Jamaican culture. I simply highlighted the Indian culture influence in the Jamaican culture. What you’ve said may be because you see it in the Jamaican culture but I can only speak on what I know, not what I don’t know, right? It’s okay to share or teach truth, if we know truth. Jamaican culture is a collaboration of other cultures including and I’d guess primarily Africa, and definitely India, as well that I can see.
@@monicagomez4616 What are some of the things in Jamaican culture that was influenced by Indians? Apart from the curry.
@@mariegold3906 ‘….the curry.’🫢
From Google searches anyone can read, even copy and pasted like I did to hopefully answer and resolve the matter:
The Indians made a number of contributions to Jamaica including the below:
The celebration of Hosei, which was symbolic of the creative exchanges that were made between the African-Creole and Indian cultures epitomises Indo-Jamaican heritage. What started out as a Muslim Indian affair soon stretched to include the African’s participation.
They introduced spices like curry powder to Jamaican cuisine.
They were skilled metalsmiths and jewellery workers and created gold, silver, and brass jewellery and ornaments.
They introduced innovative methods of farming including the cultivation of rice.
They included their distinctive music, dance, and traditional dress into the Jamaican culture. Additionally, the influences of their belief systems have also been incorporated into Jamaican religious practices.
They used marijuana for medicinal and spiritual purposes
They brought lots of new plants and trees along with their products such as coolie plum, betel leaves, betel nut, tamarind, mango, and jackfruit.
They incorporated many of their traditional Indian foods into the Jamaican culture such as curry goat, curried potato, roti, eggplant, okra, callaloo, and bitter gourd, which have all become a part of the national cuisine.
The origin of the term ‘Gong’ which was made popular by Bob Marley, who was called “Tuff Gong” is an abbreviation of the Hindi word Gangunguru which means ‘great king’ or ‘king of kings’. The name Gong was also ascribed to Leonard Howell, a prominent figure in the rastafarian community.
As you can see, the Indians and their contributions are a very strong part of our heritage. Amazing, Isn’t it? After all, we are Jamaicans - Out of Many, One People.
Also Google:
10 Contributions Indian Immigrants Made to Jamaica.
@@monicagomez4616 most of what you wrote is a reach. I did my own google search too. The word gong is of chinese origin, caloloo is of african origin. Btw alot of these food are not unique to India alone as africa has them too. No telling who's version is mostly used here, i am guessing the affricans. The truth is counties like guyana and trinidad culture is more influence by indians than a country like Jamaica and its very obvious.
Also hosei is not celebrated here. Even black history month which is a black american thing is celebrated here and not any indian holiday and that's very telling.

Hinduism is very resilient
Dreadlocks are not unique to Jamaica and Rastafarians. The dreadlocks hairstyle originated in Africa and was worn by various tribes there. The earliest tribe this hairstyle can be attributed to is the Masai tribesmen of Kenya. Many of the warriors of this tribe wore this hairstyle. Whilst holly men in India wear locks, our history tells us that Indians did not introduce dreadlocks to Jamaica. African descendants were wearing locks for thousands of years
Dreadlocks were not brought by Indians? Do you say that because you could of African ancestors? Hindu God lord Shiva have dreadlocks hindu religion which is the oldest in the world and he smokes weed
@@praneshsingh7840 no one is not denying that Lord shive did not have locks. Listen carefully….. “Indians did not introduce dreadlocks to the Caribbean, people of African descent where in the Caribbean nearly 500 years before Indians came as indentured workers and adorned locks which existed in Africa for thousands of years” . So just to reiterate what I am saying and what it is facts and what is in the history books and what we actually know about Africa is that lox has been on the heads of Africans and African descendants since the history of time . This is the natural thing with Afro hair you let it grow it turns into lox. This is not to say that there is no lox in India, no one is saying that, what I am saying and what we do you know that is a fact is that lox existed on the heads of African descendants in the Caribbean long time before Indians came to the Caribbean….. and for your information I spent 2002, 2015 and 2016 in India and yes, I saw lots of lost holy men, but that isn’t what we’re talking about here, we’re talking about who brought locks to the Caribbean!!!…….Om Namah shiva. And please don’t presume what my ethnicity is, because you don’t know me!
@@praneshsingh7840 This information was not hard to find, do your research 🧐 …Dreadlocks have a long history in Africa. Victoria Sherrow, the author of the Encyclopedia of Hair, A Cultural History 1, named the priests of the Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church as some of the first people to have sported dreadlocks in Africa, as early as 500 BCE.
Dreadlocks were found to be religiously used in indian scriptures first! Africans have locks due to nappy heads... not for spiritual reasons stop begging it. Heard a black woman say that africans invented yoga the other day... Africans didnt invent shit worthwhile. Indian brought their weed spices mangoes etc you going to claim that too??
@@linmorgan1340 Girl stop lying 🤥 dreadlocks come from Jamaica not Africa. You Africans need to stop trying to take credit for everything. Everything doesn’t come from Africa. The world does not revolve around Africa.

I don’t see anything wrong in wanting to preserve one’s culture & traditions by wanting to marry the same race/ culture & be loving & accepting to other races/ cultures.
‘Intermarriage’ does not prove anything. At best you can try to convince some people that you are not racist, but there is nothing wrong with the view of her grand father - only that he was not able to explain or articulate himself.
I am saying this as a mixed race person myself. The only benefit of being mixed race is that you might have a higher chance of evaluating what it means to be human & not identify too much with one race/ culture or another.
The British brought Indian & Chinese indentured laborers "coolies" to Jamaica at the same time to work the sugarcane fields after the emancipation of black complexioned people. So why isn't the myriad of contributions by Chinese also celebrated?
They are
😂😂😂 So now Chinese are also claiming Jamaica ??

@@topsecret5110 Plenty of Jamaicans . Good. What's their % to the Jamaican population?
Dreads came from Africa. But during slavery our ancestors hair were cut and we were not allowed to perform African customs openly. Indian style locks re-introduced that to us and African Jamaicans used their style with weed to reignite a lost flame.
The Indian influence cannot be denied. But know that dreadlocks is African as well. The origin is there.
