Nah, the people saying "Inside" was mocking reaction videos are misinterpreting what Bo was doing. He used the motif of a reaction video, where yes, he jabbed at reaction videos, but those bits were more metaphors for his own over-analysis of his own work.
It felt like he was proud of his work to begin with, but as time went on and he continued to talk about it, it seems like the insecurity in his art bled through. He became his greatest critic while listening to himself compliment his work. Its like when an artist shows a painting with pride, then the viewers says they like it, and the artist says "no, this is awful, I hate it."
Agreed, thank you for noting this. In my view it's not at all a wholesale condemnation of reaction videos. To me, so much of his material (especially Inside) is lamenting but also coming to terms with the different ways that we use social media/technology to articulate our thoughts, feelings, identities, etc. It's often how we connect and engage. There's something obviously tragic about trying to forge human connection over social media, it's heartwrenching and absurd in equal measure, but also really endearing in a way. Ironic that even as we criticize and despise it all, we are still seeking connection and value. Bo's career seems to turn on that irony so he's in on the joke the whole way through. So the reaction video bit reads to me like a tongue-in-cheek exaggeration of the self-indulgent aspects of critique, while also recognizing that the format of reaction itself is a peculiar production of our desire for connection in a digitized space, albeit in an autocannibalistic sort of way. (Forgive this comment for doing that very thing-- I've been ruminating on Inside for days now and it keeps hitting me in new ways)
Anytime someone wants to swoop in with a simplistic take on anything from Inside I'm happy to just sit back and grab the popcorn rotfl.
LOUDERRR
I'm just gonna' throw this in here...

"...and laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself"
I think it takes a really special kind of person to be as self aware as Bo and to be talented enough to boil down some VERY complex feelings into one or two lines. This is really really special.
The fact that he quit/went silent for like 4-5 years after this gave it so much more weight
He didn't really go silent, he just stopped doing comedy
He made a movie named âEighth Gradeâ when he stopped comedy for awhile
@@jojjn8272 a fucking fantastic movie at that
He basically move to movies for a little while like when he made eight grade and he was in the movie promising young woman.
He is a Real Human, who is real to himself and everyone.
And that's why WE LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The final double entendre line "I hope you're happy" hurts my soul.
How is it a double entendre?
This isn't a double meaning. Bo always wants his audience to be happy after a show.
Listen to his interview on "The Comedians comedian podcast"
@@Marina-pe1gx idk about double entendre, but coulda meant if the audience was happy, then Bo âmade happyâ as in the title of the special. Also, itâs what he was trying to give the audience âthat he couldnât give himself.â Just ideas.
@@ComedyBee I saw another interview (I think called Good One) where he does talk about it being a mix of "I genuinely hope you're happy" and "I hope you're fucking happy ( you put me through this)"
I hope youâre happy with my performance.
I hope youâre happy with your own life.
I hope youâre âhappyâ about the negative psychological effect you have on me.
Itâs a triple entendre, IMO.
That finalle to his show just gets me when I watch it. Having heard bits of his interviews (and he also mentions it in "Inside"), Bo has said he was getting panic attacks on stage, but had to essentailly push through with shear will, because his shows are written to the word and even taking a deep breath isn't possible for the timing in some of his skits. He has denied that the Pringle can and burrito were metaphors but regardless the comparison is clear as day. When he, as a teenager, shoots onto the scene in early youtube to become a household name as a comedian within a decade and having to deal with all the stress and trappings that come with that, it is no surprise he retired from stand up after his "Make Happy" tour finished. I was delighted to see him come back this year, but even though he didn't have to go stage this time, he continues to suffer for his art. Please jump on Netflix and watch Bo's stuff Jon, he is brilliant, but "Inside".. that is hilarious, frequently thoughtful, often uncomfortable and without a doubt is an experience you need to sit through.
Came to say the same. There's just so many layers here. One of the big things I do like (and a thing many people miss) is how, while on the surface the song (at least the start) is a joke about how shallow Kanye's problems are, it's also a recognition of Kanye's actual problems: the industry, drugs and fame have seriously affected Kanye's mental health. Bo is relating to Kanye as much as he is mocking him.
I still cry even just *thinking* about the ending song to Make Happy. And to think that was the same room that facilitated the creation of Inside...
Wait, he's denied that the burrito ingredients were a metaphor for all the luggage becoming famous brings with it? Do you have a source on that?
@@lex224ification It would probably take me too long to find again, and I'm a little busy today. It was in an interview he did a while back. An informal interview in front of a small crowd. He was asked about it and he basically just said it was all just a joke. Of course there's the strong chance he may have been sugarcoating for the audience.
Bo is so hard on himself. He's a great comedian, musician, director, and an artist. He makes all this content for us and doesn't seem to make himself happy):
Imagine if he could get on stage and enjoy himself. Trust that his songs are good enough.... And have fun in the moment.
We enjoy Van Gogh's works centuries later.
Robin Williams' works still make us chuckle.
The ability to create beauty that others can/do appreciate is wholly separate from the ability to generate joy and peace within the self.
Art is Dead would be a great reaction, so many Bo songs are metaphor dense and double entendre heavy, obviously hilarious as well. Definitely worth considering doing more
absolutely
Most definitely! This isn't getting enough likes!
Art is dead isnt really a funny song though. Bo himself says it isn't comedic, it's an apology.
Yes!
@@TheMoth4 it's "funny" in the same way that this one is. The self awareness and wit are what is funny - not the subject matter.
I donât believe Boâs reaction in the special is by any means a mockery of reactions, but rather something he included due to it being an important part of his quarantine.
Also more of a look at himself, if you notice it almost screams "I hate seeing the person I am" because he ends up cutting it off saying he was tired of seeing it
@@rumorz3491 yeah, if anything it's much more of a device for him to poke fun at the different layers he uses to protect himself from criticism like when he talks about how him being self-aware doesn't absolve him of anything rather than it is him mocking reaction videos
@@jamiexiv exactly, although there's always the part of me that wonders if us fans dig too deep into some of his subjects and try to make more out of it than there is. But here it seems like we made out what he wanted to do
Most of the comedy skits had the overlaying comedy layer and a deeper layer. Same with the White Womans Instagram one making fun of stereotypical white girl instagram posts when suddenly it hits you with the part about her mother, thus humanizing the caricature and showing that even those seemingly happy people posting aesthetic pictures have their personal struggles and are still.. human
100% everything in the special is just things that were very common or grew in popularity while everyone was on lockdown
I canât get through this without tearing up at the end lmao
I do forget that the same time Bo went viral on CZcams with his comedy, Justin Bieber was going viral too. That was such an odd time on CZcams let alone the internet looking back at it now and where they both are in the mainstream.
It really did take a toll on both, each in different ways
What will probably end up finding out later on, when Bo starts doing interviews about the special, is that watching reaction videos are his guilty pleasure.
I know I like watching reaction videos, because I can't unwatch something that I just watched or Purge it for my memory. I like watching other people react to things because it's kind of like reliving it again.
He was watching Hasanabi at the time so he probably watched him react some videos!! When in goodbye "How 'bout I sit on the couch and I watch you next time? I wanna hear you tell a joke when no one's laughing in the background" I took it as he was
genuinely inviting the people that watched it to start creating, youtubers and streamers do tell jokes in a room when they are "alone" (theres chat but it's not the same)
Also inside feels like a youtube binge and it's clearly inspired by the medium
The "...and watch as he attempts to give you what he can not give himself" and his "I hope your happy" (show is called 'Make Happy' btw) at the end always hits me so hard. Honestly I've watched the special a few times and I've seen many reactions and I still get goosebumps every time.
I would highly recommend checking out "All Eyes on Me" from his Inside special.
I feel like the kanye rant was like a prequel to all eyes on me
This is one of my favorite moments in comedic history. So glad you reacted to this. Crazy to think he walked off stage right after this with the intent of not performing anymoe ever again.
No, he didn't quit after this performance. That's a myth people spread to romanticize this performance, which is gross given the subject matter. This was recorded in 2015, and he was still performing well into 2016. His panic attacks and his final show weren't recorded.
AYY A NEW VID FROM OUR BOI!
this aint new my dude
Bo does not mock reaction videos, he uses the format for an artistic/comedic piece, but of course people who don't understand the value of reaction videos interpret it as mocking, and use that as an excuse to level hate on reactors. Sorry that people do that, keep up the great content :)
yesssss loving the potential of more bo on this channel
We definitely need more Bo reactions from songs across all of his specials. He's really a different kind of talent and has so many gems you can discover. Been watching you and Bo forever and I can't wait for you to finally understand his genius how i did.
There's theories that when he talks about the pringle can its actually a metaphor for achieving happiness and how he can't reach it, that's why he wants a daughter, to be able to get the Pringles (happiness). The burrito could also be like life and all the stuff inside is like everything he is doing and going through.
Makes sense when placed with the context of the third section of the song, where he pulls back the comedy to directly touch on his mental health and what he views/ed as a toxic relationship with his audience/performance overall.
He himself has said that there was no meaning to the pringle can and burrito stuff, and it was just Silly jokes. It was in an interview before the release of Eight Grade where they talked about this song specifically.
Makes sense
@@creeperhunterD Yeah that happens a lot with Bo's stuff, people think that the lyrics in his songs are really deep and meaningful when in reality what he's saying is literally what he's saying, no hidden meanings or anything
@@Conquer_IRE Whether it was intentional or not, the fact that people can come to different conclusions and interpretations of it speaks to how sharp and creative the art is imo.
It never fails to make me tear up a bit when he gets real at the end. Bo's a genius.
7:53 I've listened to this so many times and that "HA!" is still so powerful.
This is the absolute best part of Make Happy, he makes magic
'we think we know you' is another class one from Bo. Similarly introspective, funny and musical
The âLeft Brain, Right Brainâ song from What. Is amazing as well
Man. That piece gives me shivers and makes me damn near cry every single time I watch it. I love Bo. How lucky are we to live at the same time as that brilliant man. We love you Boâ€ïž
This song is so much more powerful now that inside is a thing now, and the whole theme of it
Yes bo is my favorite comedian ever. He just uploaded white women Instagram from his latest special on his CZcams today!
The thing about the whole burrito bit was that he started it as a joke, but as it goes on you realize it's all just a metaphor, because that's what Bo does. When he says _"I'm not a doctor, I'm a pussy, I put on a silly show. So I should probably just shut up and do my job, so here I go"_ and then goes back to the ingredients not fitting into the burrito. (Basically saying, that I should stop complaining about my hardships on stage and tell some jokes so he goes back to saying what people will think are jokes.)
In reality, everything not fitting in the burrito is a metaphor for the fact that he started this comedy thing, he asked for it, but no one warned him where it would lead to, no one warned him about the fact that there's so much shit that comes with it that it will become difficult for him to handle. (The fame, the anxiety of performing for a crowd, the constant scrutiny of being in the public eye etc.)
I've never bought the whole metaphor thing it feels contrived. The simpler answer is that its a point of contrast, when he comes back into talking about burritos the second time it feels different, something that we were laughing at initially now feels way emptier and that feeling has always been what I've taken away from that bit rather than assuming it's weird metaphor
@@synthiandrakon I actually wrote that out hoping someone would go "woah, that's genius".. and then I could reveal that it was just a made up interpretation. The truth is, it means nothing.. Bo has said himself he just included it because he thought it was a silly and funny bit. People are free to interpret it however they want, but Bo didn't mean anything deep with it. But he finds it interesting how people dig into it so much because they think he's some kind of genius.
I think your reaction was great! I feel like a lot of people are being overly critical and honestly (imo) misunderstood the point of Boâs reaction inception shot. I thought it was more a commentary on how he overanalyzes everything he does, and shows these layers of conflicting emotions he has. I appreciated your thoughts and opinions on this piece and Welcome to the Internet đđ
We should have known that the next Bo Burnham video Jon would react to would be the one with Kanye West in the title. Love to see it đ€Ł
Bo is one of my favorite comedians. He is genius. A perfect blend of hilarity and reality. He is amazing. If you want a song that is wordplay heavy to analyze I would definitely recommend "words words words". I've been a fan of bo's for years and am absolutely thriving on all these people discovering him for the first time off the back of his new special
Once he releases "That funny feeling", you gotta watch it. It's incredible.
I really recommend watching all of his specials in order!
I'm so happy to see one of my favorite reaction channels hitting Bo Burnham.
I hope you keep going through the catalog of his, I'll be here every video and them some.
So happy about this. Been following bo since 2012 probably, so happy to see him kinda reaching the mainstream!
Would love more of Bo, Jon!
His show on Netflix is pretty dark and while making me laugh it hit home aswell.
This is like two of my world's colliding! Love that you're checking out more Bo!
I really hope the bo reactions don't stop I'm living them. Keep it up man
I think itâs really significant this was his last song before he quit before making inside.
Well it was really âare you happyâ which I think hits even harder
I would love to see more Bo reactions from you, especially since I know you'll give them some genuine thought and have an interesting perspective. I do recommend watching the specials in full, if you do want to react to those maybe cut them up into segments or something, but I also recommend the music videos for Repeat Stuff, Words Words Words, and Oh Bo. Theres a whole conversation he has with the audience right before this song and it adds some context. Bo himself is from the CZcams world, starting out making videos when he was 16 in 2006 before comedy central took notice.
I would recommend to watch his specials in order because the growth and change of bo burnham adds to the appreciation of him. What, make happy and then finally his masterpiece inside. While watching inside alone is still wonderful, itâs the culmination of his works that truly gives it its beauty in my humble opinion.
AYYYY FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS i knew u had good taste but this confirms it đ
A nice pet of the new special is a whole new slew of Bo reactions. One of the best out there
yesss, watch the specials!!! they're amazing and the way he puts them together is at least half of it
This is just the culmination of the end of the special but it is truly an amazing piece for so many difererent reasons.
I remember watching this special with one of my best friends and my roommate at the time and I think we all spent so much time after just talking and learning about eachother we would have never done before because of this. It is just so powerful.
Iâm so happy youâre reacting to Bo! Heâs my favorite comedian because of his creativity and his layers of deep meaning and social commentary. And youâre my favorite reactor because you can see those layers and multiple meanings so quickly and I always enjoy your point of view. Youâll love him!!
I'm new to Bo too and I can't get it all out of my head. Inside is an absolute gem. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video! Bo's performance has given me chills everytime I've seen it, but none of the other reactors I've watched seem to get it. Laughing along and seeing your reaction change was almost like hanging out with friends lol.
i SUBSCRIBED because YOU'RE NOT they typical reaction video and you've done you're homework to a tee. Props to you and your content. I'm here for more.
This is awesome. Can't believe you're reacting to this. It's pretty great. Bo in general makes great work.
Really enjoy you bro. New subscriber here (mainly because of Bo) you donât talk to much during and have great insight afterwards, very good work mate
Yesssssss!!!! Iâm so here for your Bo reactions. You need to react to the entirety of Inside!
Love seeing this! Bo has a deep catalougue of catchy, interesting songs. I promise you can't run out of them
this is such an emotionally deep performance once you realize what the song is actually about. the change halfway through still gets me every time.
need, need, need to watch all bo's content. truly incredible
I normally hate reaction videos with a passion but thereâs something about yours that I find really entertainingâŠ. Keep it up!!!
A watch along to his specials on patreon would be incredible!!
Such an amazing vid man! Keep reacting to Bo!
Both "what" and "make happy" are absolutely brilliant specials that I would love to see reactions to. "inside" is a masterpiece, but it could be good to watch the others first to get a better idea of who Bo is and his comedy style. :)
yess i am so glad you discovered bo
Great video buddy đđŒ know you might not see this but keep it up love the Bo Burnham stuff
didn't expect this, great video Jon!
Would love to see more Bo reactions. His stuff is great.

So happy that youâve discovered Bo Burnham. He is different and memorable
Thank you Jon YES! Please go thru some of his catalog
Ayyyy finally warming up to bo burnham! Ive been requesting you to do these since rockreacts lol how i miss that channel. Anyways his other good bits are "Lower your expectations" "Gods Perspective" "Kill yourself". Appreciate your reactions as always!
Letâs go! More bo!
He is a big fan of Kanye, spoke about it in an interview
Honestly, Bo's end songs are always wonderful. If you wanna keep going with this, I'd recommend "We Think We Know You" from the end of his special "What." which was phenomenal.
But some of his other songs from "Inside" are fantastic too! If you want something funny, I'd recommend "White Woman's Instagram" and if you'd like something serious, I'd recommend "That Funny Feeling."
You gotta watch both Make Happy and Inside you will love them
more !! it was so good
Inside was beautiful and funny and heavy
I know you cant react to it but I would adore your thoughts on it once you watch it
either way Bo is a fantastic lyricist going to back when he was very young, he has always been smart (perhaps too much for his own sanity) but Im glad you are finding him now
better late than never :)
stay awesome you wonderful human!
I think your reaction videos are great! I think bo would be happy with this.
Bo burnham all eyes on me is a must watch after this one, the 2 songs together say alot
I'm hoping for more Bo reactions, he's so talented
I haven't watched the reaction bit of his special, but from knowing Bo's way of doing comedy he never really mocks people, he does point out things that sometimes are really dark or specific to the society, internet everything. But he uses it as commentary and not to make fun of people. So do what you do. Keep up the good work
I like your reactions of Bo, you should do more!
I love this one so much. Bc when at the end he say HA HA HA in the mike and itâs a mocking of the laughing but it sounds so painful and it is. Sooo deep.
Marina is releasing her new album tomorrow and I donât think youâve done a video on her but sheâs amazing and lyrics are awesome!
Bo finds ways to cut so deep while being hilarious. It's an uncanny skill of his that truly makes him one of the greatest artists of our time.
The line, "Come and watch the skinny kid with steadily declining mental health, and laugh as he attempts to give you what he cannnot give himself" literally makes me cry almost every time I hear it. The pain that is behind those words cuts me to my core as someone who struggles with depression.
I have so much admiration for who he is as an artist moreso than just a comedian.
Years later he said on the H3 podcast that he sobbed uncontrollably after the first show he did for this special. Makes so much sense to me now.
One of the best and definately the most different kind of comedian.
While I do wish you had seen this for the first time after watching the rest of the special, Iâm glad you saw it at all. Man though, what a finale to an amazing special. So many emotions. Itâs a performance, and mostly comedy, but you can feel his pain through it.
Just found your channel bc of Bo and I like your reaction style đ Have you thought about reacting to other genres of music like metal? The metal community on CZcams is huge and they are generally a super nice group of folks (despite the âscaryâ stereotypes) and would bring a whole bunch of new viewers to your channel.
this song always makes me so emotional. you can tell he's going through some real stuff.
Seeing this live when I was 17 was one of the most shocking things I had ever experienced. I remember being so worried for him after.
React to Art is Dead by Bo itâs one of the first times he showed his problems in the industry he works in
inside is so good đđ iâm so happy the songs are on spotify
would love to see you react to more of his content :)
I go to these reactions to live vicariously through people. Wish I could listen for the first time again.
after "inside" seeing this again i am so close to tears for him. he is also a genius.
Yes yes yes more Bo reactions!
I feel like people need to give Jon Denton some slack. I don't subscribe to him, but I have seen him over the years when he is randomly in my recommendations. And every time I've seen his clips, he always gives insight I had never thought of before. He seems to genuinely be passionate about music, and has deep respect for artist that make their work.
His Bo reactions are different, because he was left speechless. Burnham's work hit him so hard emotionally, and had such a profound impact on him - he needed to sit in silence and take in the moment. I know if you've ONLY seen these videos, you may think he's a regular reaction channel that just watches another video and doesn't add anything.
But that is not the case. He doesn't say much here because Bo genuinely moved him. I don't follow him regularly but I 100% believe his reactions here are genuine. Plus all you Bo fans know how YOU FELT the first time you heard these songs. I know they hit me really hard, and in ways I had never felt before with other music.
He is a master at weaving comedy/ and hard topics together in unexpected ways. Jon if you see this, react to Bo's "All Eyes On Me." It's one of the final tracks on the Inside special. When you see it you will know what I'm talking about. The track punches you in the gut.
Bo's entire thing is taking something that is typically dunked on, and spinning it to show that a) It's okay to do these things and b) Demonstrate something about his personal opinions and feelings via the medium. He's fantastic of taking something often maligned and making a commentary on it. If people think he was making fun of reaction videos they missed the point! Love the channel man, keep it up, you've got fantastic analysis.
It was so absolutely surreal seeing this live (not this specific show). No one quite knew what to do for a moment after it was over, but then it was an immediate standing ovation. Unforgettable night.
As a huge Bo fan, love the reactions! Itâs straight up magic seeing someone discover Bo for the first time. So Hereâs a little guide that might be useful:

I think the Pringles & Burrito rants are symbolizing his life. Pringles = Knows what he wants out of life but canât have (or grasp) it. Burrito = His life as a celebrity in the spotlight. Maybe he wouldâve done things differently had he known what it REALLY took to be a celebrity. Even his comedy is a symbolism of his life. I urge you to go back and watch his first 2 Netflix specials armed with knowing about his mental health. Heâs a musical & sarcastic genius with his comedy. Using both of these funny rants (handling Pringles & Burritos) to share his message about handling fame. Glad he had the strength to share ALL of this with the world and bring a spotlight to mental health with his powerful âInsideâ special. God Bless
Yes!! We need more Bo Burnham reactions! I think you'd love his country song parody
The reaction song is hilarious, and I donât think that you should feel bad reacting to it. All of his shows are amazing
