  • Professional wrestling and college football have a few major similarities. There is a locker room to manage, a roster to construct and - most importantly - top-level talent to recruit.
On this episode of Conversations with Coach, Bob Stoops and legendary wrestling announcer Jim Ross discuss the similarities between their professions, JR’s career, road stories and their shared optimism about OU football.
    Among other topics discussed:
*Where Ross’ love for sports came from. (2:45)
*How he got started in pro wrestling. (9:43)
*How Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came to be (15:06)
*JR’s favorite Oklahoma football memories (31:24)
*What the XFL and USFL merger will produce (35:33)
    Producer: Jacquelyn Musgrove
    Creative Director: Michael Lane

In 2018 when we were living in Germany, we went to Scotland for a long weekend and booked an Air B&B. They asked in the chat where we were originally from and we said Oklahoma. So when we arrived at their home, we talked to the lady for a few hours before her son came home. His first words to me were Boomer Sooner! He said that was all he knew about Oklahoma and it was because of how much he loved JR. He has touched the lives of people that he will never know. Loved the interview.

I just flipped the channel and came to this show. Not meaning to watch it through, I ended up watching the whole thing, which I enjoyed and learned who Jim Ross was. (Sorry I haven't been a sports fan, though I'm a fan of Bob Stoops.)

I grew up watching wrestling when I was at my grandma's TV in Tulsa late 60's early 70's cudnt say what yr.but it was later known as Midsouth wrestling with okla wrestler and owner of midsouth where I first saw JR I believe my grandma liked it too or I wouldn't never got to see it. I later on as adult finally got to see mid south wrestling they had hacksaw Duggan junkyard dog as a tag team , they had big Kamala the warrior huge man. Rock n roll express ,Jake the snake ., I was working at paper plant another coworker talked me into it we had a. Last we had pretty good seats only a out 20 rows back from ring they went right by us. Then 1 summer back 1984 -85 I tool a flight to Las Vegas and get the flight at Tulsa Airport I be damn here come hacksaw Duggan And JYD sitting in front of me one of them 1 side of 2 sears the other one other side of aisle because they were so big hanging out over arms and ther necks shoulders were so big and I'm not a small man like 6"3" 280lb they made me feel small from how. Much they lifted so much weights it made ther upper bodies so huge. I've watched JR watching ou games from sidelines many times I didn't knowit was him with his dark glasses until they mentioned I hadn't seen him since his earlier WWE days I didn't know he went full. Out cowboy on us. I like his "Jerky' he has out Now Too! JR knows a lot of celebrities stars etc they know him . Another great okie!

I meant to leave Cowboy Bill watts as owner of Mid south wrestling last yrs bill was out of Bixby, ok south of tulsa . I think Bixby is amateur wrestling capital of the world with ther nationals they have every year noe Bixby high has #1 state championship football back to back kinda took over the top from Jenks and union .

Ross was at cowboy bill watts midsouth wrestling he lived at Bixby, ok. But I think midsouth was run out of Memphis and Dallas at first late 60's early 70's when he was on Tulsa ch6 or 2 TV station on sat noon.
