Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is a 2001 platform game developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Universal Interactive Studios. It was first released for the PlayStation 2 and later ported to the Xbox, and GameCube, with Eurocom developing the GameCube version. The game was originally a sequel to Crash Bandicoot: Warped before being retconned by Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time in 2020.
The game is the fourth main installment and the sixth overall in the Crash Bandicoot video game series. It is the first of the entire series to not be released exclusively for a PlayStation console. The plot centers on the appearance of Crunch Bandicoot, a genetically advanced bandicoot created by the main antagonist of the series, Doctor Neo Cortex, who has harnessed the power of a group of destructive mask spirits known as the Elementals. Crash Bandicoot and his sister Coco must travel the world and gather special Crystals that will return the Elementals to a hibernated state, and thwart Cortex's plans to use Crunch as a weapon for world domination.
Critical reception of the game was mixed, with many reviewers opining that the game recycled elements from its PlayStation predecessors with minimal innovation. The PlayStation 2 edition sold 1.56 million copies in North America, and the game qualified for various best-seller ranges, including the Platinum Range for PlayStation 2, Xbox Classics, and Player's Choice on GameCube. It was released as a launch title for the Xbox Originals line of downloadable original-Xbox games for the Xbox 360's Live Marketplace service in December 2007.

This is the first Crash Bandicoot game to be released on other consoles that are not just Playstation.
On the Xbox version of the game, there is a cheat where you can beat the game in full 100%. When you start a new game, you'll be told to type in a name. Type in "WOMBAT" and the cheat will be activated.
This is also the first Crash Bandicoot game where Coco has combat moves when you play as her.
This game was originally going to be a free roam game, but the concept of that idea was later scrapped and the idea wasn't used until Crash Twinsanity (2004) was released.

I would say the PS2 version is the best for this game. Xbox version has sharper graphics, but on the other hand, the PS2 version seem to have smoother effects compared to the Xbox version, like the snow at 2:55. Also, the textures and colors in the PS2 version look about as crisp, if not, more clearer and vibrant than the Xbox version. The GameCube version however is missing many lighting and graphical effects (even missing the snow), and on top of that, having big slow down in many areas which really hinders the experience.

The Xbox port is mostly superior with Crash's fur and faster load times but the shadows are broken. It's missing that softness from the PS2. At 1:20, you can see Crash's shadow going through his shoes a bit. The snowflakes seem to have some type of transparancy issue so they look better on PS2. Also, this version (and the Gamecube) is missing a unique song in one of the later levels that is only present on PS2. Even the sky looks different, it's more foggy, not sure if intentional or not.
The PS2 version is the most consistent one. While missing the few tweaks from Xbox, it also doesn't have the bugs from it. Its biggest problem are the loading screens unless you have the platinum/greatest hits release.
The Gamecube port on the other hand is downright terrible. The shaders and some graphical effects are completely gone, the snowflakes don't even show up and the shadows look somehow worse than Xbox's. Once again having this simplistic cartoony look like it happened on other games like Cars.
I would say overall, the PS2 version is the best one.

I have seen on this channel many comparisons where the Gamecube is included and most of the time, the shadows and shaders of the games look weird or broken.
Unless a game is built for the system like Resident Evil 4, it will normally look worse than the PS2 versions despite being more powerful.

For me it was XBOX > PS2 > Gamecube. In the XBOX version i had Crash had actual fur similar to the Conker remake. It also had the best overall graphics and effects, the only drawback was that it lacked 16:9 support. The PS2 version had the worst graphics of the three but ran at 60 fps and had 16:9 support and better sound than the GC port. The Gamecube version looked almost as good as the XBOX version but is missing a lot of the visual effects the other two have and the sound is heavily compressed. The system has no 16:9 support at all, but the worst part of the GC port is that it's capped at 30 fps and in certain levels struggles to keep that.

The Xbox was much more powerful than the other two consoles.
It had a fully-SIMD x86 CPU and the only programmable shader GPU in the world in a console until the 360 released in 2005.
The Xbox's GPU -- NV2a -- was a beastly chip, and was arguably more powerful than the flagship NV20/GeForce 3 in 2001.
It was internally known as NV27.5 according to J Allard, and was a hybrid GPU that had elements of NV20, NV25 and even NV30.
      NV30 didn't release until 2003.
Arguably, the chip's closest relative is GeForce 4 TI (NV25), which didn't release until 2002.
      The machine was a monster.
By comparison, the Wii -- which released in 2006 -- is almost certainly less powerful than the OG Xbox. The GameCube has a 1997 PPC CPU which is pre-Altivec, and despite the move to 'paired singles' this means that it wasn't a fully-SIMD CPU; likewise, the GPU was fixed-function, and thus is closer to tech from 2000 rather than 2001 and beyond.
The Wii merely doubles the clocks on both chips. Meaning that the Xbox was siperior to a mainstream console released in 2006...a full five years later.
Even the Wii U, still built on the 1997 Power PC tech of GC, didn't have a fully-SIMD CPU.
And it took Nintendo a full 11 yeara to surpass the OG Xbox chipset. Or to have a programmable shader GPU in one of their consoles.
      Crazy.

Because it is the worst version. Like others already mentioned, the GameCube version is missing several lighting and graphical effects, and on top of it, big slow down in some areas. Not sure why this is, but I know for sure that it’s not the fault of the hardware, but rather the fault of the developers for making such a poor port for the GameCube. In the case of the Crash Bandicoot series, most games were primarily designed for PlayStation consoles and this game shows.

The Xbox 360 version has better graphics, the characters have fur, and in the frost phase I realized it's the only version that has ice noise, and the level is more detailed, probably the best version!

  • @brucepeelgaming2356

Great video! I think you might accidentally switched PS2 and Gamecube version, because PS2 doesn't use any anti-aliasing and on your video it's shown the opposite. Gamecube version looks smoothed out and on the PS2 version we can see all the jaggies because there's no anti-aliasing. Also, PS2 version have better color palette than the Gamecube. Xbox version is superior by far: enhanced graphics and consistent 60 fps, while Gamecube and PS2 have obvious framerate dips.

Why couldnt they keep using the crash 3 engine. This game handked like trash the ps1 version just felt snappy once you got into the groove of things you would be abke to pull off jumps to skip parts of the level like the rat pits in the second game. I can only imagine if they optimised this game as well as the ps1 versions how nice it would have looked. I always thiught the 3rd game looked better than this game. Lower resulution but the detail was far better.
