"Huge numbers of our population believe in a complete alternate reality. Alternate facts as it were. But just as intensely as I believe they are deluded, they think I am the one who is deluded. Maybe I am. So how can I be confident in my perception? It can be quite difficult. But I have found that in times of confusion, particularly when emotions are running high and creating tunnel vision, the presence of Nazis can be an extremely helpful indicator. If I am attending a local demonstration or event and I see Nazis…neo-Nazis, miscellaneous-Nazis or the latest-whatever-uber-mythology-Nazis, I figure out which side they are on. And if they are on my side of the demonstration? I am on the wrong side. It is tough to argue moral equivalence when I am standing next to a Nazi. Look to my right. Is there a guy wearing a 6MWE (6 million wasn’t enough) t-shirt? I am on the wrong side. Look to my left. Is that guy is wearing a Camp Auschwitz t-shirt? Wrong side. Speakers referring to things Hitler got right? Wrong side. Team-spirit face paint and hat with horns? This is an unclear indicator that could mean anything but safest to keep my distance from that guy even at a football game. But I can always, always, always, rely on the presence of Nazis as a guiding light through a fog of disinformation. Some things are relative, but evil and good are absolute.”
So I guess according to Republicans Joey B will have permission to burn the actual white house to the ground. All he will have to say is "I just light the match, I have no control of what that match does"

In fact, we should encourage the current POTUS to threaten Republican governors, mayors, etc. Graham should be faced with a kidnap attempt, etc. Hell, top it off by attacking random passersby with shootings from a sawed-off shotgun.

@@stinkee2 More or less. Economically, I believe Republicans have always been a bit more conservative and laissez-faire, but with the economic and demographic changes caused by FDR's New Deal, followed by LBJ's Big Society and signing of the Civil Rights Act, and Nixon's use of the Southern Strategy, the Democrats went from being the racist, segregationist party of the south that it was in the 1800s, to the multicultural, inclusive party that it is now in the modern era.

Saddest of all is how little all of this is going to matter in the end:
The lives of the people who died, the heroism of those who protected our leaders; the blind, violent hatred and disdain for law and order displayed by the attackers, the psychological scars left on those individuals who feared for their lives...
The knowledge that even senators who themselves could have been hurt or worse in the attack will likely vote to acquit Trump...that they literally value their careers more than their own safety...
The unavoidable fact that even if Trump *didn't* mastermind the insurrection, he still refused to even try stopping it...
The sense that even within the *very building* where our laws are made, we are not safe from lawlessness...
In the end, none of this is going to matter: because the impeachment system is absurd, and did not anticipate the overwhelming influence of partisan politics.
As long as an impeached President's party still controls more than a third of the Senate, he or she is essentially unimpeachable.
The responsibility for indicting, trying, and ultimately voting whether or not to convict a President should NOT be in the hands of Congress.
What would you do if you were on a jury, and not only was the defendant your boss--but you knew damn well your career would be ruined if you voted to convict him?
Senators should absolutely think about justice and the interests of the nation when they make their votes...but doing so shouldn't have the possibility of ruining them--that's an extraneous consideration that makes objectivity impossible.

Honestly, perhaps someone should tell this sentient pot of lube that guilt doesn't end with the office. As said, this isn't about punishment, it's about prevention, and nobody with a functioning brain would want that orange lunatic back for a second round in office.
Gotta wonder. If, during a normal trial, a juror pulled out a magazine and started tuning out the arguments, what would happen? Would that juror simply get booted out?
Yes. But of course part of jury selection means that any person that might have bias cannot be on the jury. (At least if the lawyers involved are doing their job properly.) So naturally none of the GOP would be on a jury with the president on trial. Nor would the democrats who were there during the insurrection.
THANK YOU
I'm embarrassed for America. Europe and other nations are in shock!
If these republicans do not convict him, they should forever be in history’s shame list
Don't think they know the word shame
Sadly we know they won't. They are more worried about getting reelected than what's best for the country.
At an absolute minimum. They are protecting a clear and obvious criminal.
@@DavidSmith-wr5sj In truth, they are protecting their election chances. They don't care about the country, they don't care about dignity, they probably don't even give a shit about Trump. The only thing they care about are themselves.
@@transcendentalidiot3321 That's an utter bullshit excuse though. 4 GOP senators are retiring. Over a dozen won their elections last year. That's 16 right there that have no good reason to vote for acquittal.
How did the Georgia senate run-offs go with 2 pro Trump senators? They lost. My theory is Trumpism is fracturing the party so bad they'll have to start a new conservative party. Which will in the end make it hard for Republicans to win a majority if they have Trumpers and real conservatives going head to head.
I'm not saying you're wrong about the senators, but it's still bullshit.
Cruz doesn't need the headphones. He's already without conscience
Yeah. He had it aborted - ironic though that is.
Where’s the acquittal episode lol?
It'll show up, I'm sure. After all, Stephen has to pay for his insane intake of Bromo-selzer and anti-nausea meds somehow.

To be able to make a “human connection”, Republicans would need to be “human”, no?
Oh Fatima, just make sure to stay in your echo chamber. Otherwise, you might get called out on your hypocrisy
Lol why do trump supporters even come to these videos 😂
@Dan M WOW! You spent a lot of energy & space on responding to Fatima (BTW, Fatima- 💯 agree with you). Yet, none of it really made sense, or addressed her point; GOP is full of soulless, inhuman & inhumane creatures living in an alternate reality.
Not everyone in the US is Christian. One of the pillars of our democratic republic is freedom of religion, and the prohibition of an official state religion. I'm not even sure from which scripture you take your religious exhortations; I don't think they come from any recognized writings I know of. Of course, I'm Jewish, so I could be wrong.
People like you don't ever admit to that possibility. You make pronouncements as if they are verified fact, rather than opinion. It must me nice to live with such certainty, and to believe your opinions should govern all of us, even those who believe differently. No thanks, brother. One of the greatest aspects of Judaism is the belief that you don't need to be Jewish to get to heaven- only righteous in your life and actions toward others. Yeah, we invented the Golden Rule.
You do you, leave the rest of us out of it. And, again, Fatima is 💯 correct about the GOP.
They are human. Dehumanizing them is both dangerous and missing the point. We need to learn to filter sociopathy OUT of positions of power, not reward it. We certainly should not be dehumanizing anyone, as that is the path to violence.
Republicans are currently acting like that Shaggy song “it wasn’t me”
Republicans aren't acting. They are the America's Taliban or ISIS. Terrorist organisations that use violence to intimidate the populas is what they are. Don't be afraid to expose the characteristics of their cult. 👍

If only the Dems had some blackmail material on the GOP... because facts and reason just doesn't seem to be enough!
You mean aside from the fact they probably cheated their own elections so they keep winning?
Dems have a conscience and care about people. That’s the problem. Dems won’t stoop that low and I’m glad.
@@erichfiedler1481 I find it very telling that you accused democrats of rigging their elections but don't seem to think that Republicans including Trump did. Let me guess, you think that the presidential election was "stolen".
Blackmail only works on people with a sense of shame. What could you possibly hold over them that they wouldn't just ignore or claim is fake?
@@erichfiedler1481 That you use the word "probably" tells me that you should look up gerrymandering (admittedly both sides do it, the dems just aren't particularly good at it). Which is not to downplay how successful the GOP has been at its time honored hobby of voter suppression.

Why don’t they throw out the republicans who aren’t respecting the process. An impeachment is kind of a big deal
Right? How is this kind of behaviour different from contempt of court? I wish they'd release footage of these stooges so it can be used in the next election.
@@dc8484 And who do you think elected them this time? They'd just be celebrated and re-elected.

Had the replay the animation at the beginning twice, it was that good.
I love you Mr. Colbert!! 🤣 You are funny & smart.. you nail it every time!!! 🤣
why is it not illegal for these senators to obviously not pay attention to the trial? if a judge saw a juror just whip out their phone and mess with it, the judge would throw them out and bring charges at them.
But these are not normal people these are a people without morals with no sense of decency.
They did the same thing first impeachment too!
Impeachment is now a partisan issue in America, like masks, vaccines and basic human decency.
Exactly!!!
An impeachment trial, while it has some similarities, isn't a criminal trial. The obvious point has been raised before that someone who had cooperated in fraudulent claims with the defendant wouldn't be allowed to serve as a juror. The jury also doesn't have the same rules of conduct, and the rules of evidence aren't the same. You'd think that the Republicans screwing around like this would be too embarrassed on their own behalf to behave like this, even without a judge to pitch them out, but they're not.
If you were in any other job, if you acted like they did on the job...you’d be instantly fired or reprimanded

Great Stephen and Crew!
I hope the Senate Democrats repeat, verbatim, the article of impeachment and then ask each Senator "How do you find the defendant? Guilty or Not Guilty?" I feel so sorry for Americans having to deal with this joke of a trial. The evidence is damning and yet those cowards turn a blind eye to something they would instantly take care of if it was about someone else.
Can you imagine what they would have done if it was President Obama?!
This is a political trial. We have 3 co-equal branches of government, so this isn't a criminal trial. It does things like determining if he can hold office again. The criminal trials will come from the judicial branch, not the legislative one. The executive branch is also stepping back and allowing the courts to decide. This one isn't the big one. It does say a lot about who we have representing us though, and voters will watch it and be upset if these people don't grow up and act like adults....
I know right, the racists even deliberately crossed out a word in the constitution and added their own - watch?v=xIBg5CN2RMU&t=3960s
There is no evidence.
Just like the dems did all last year as there were riots all over the country. And rather than try to calm it down and get it under control, they egged it on and in most cases actually encouraged it. The double standard here is undeniable.
