88 Films NEW Shaw Brothers Bluray Releases COMING SOON!

So this new slice of 88 Films/Shaws news leaked out yesterday from MVD through the forums on Bluray.com and then very quickly everywhere - 88 Films have ( at least) three more Shaw Brothers titles on the way, with these three being expected in Sep2024.
Join me as I break down the three titles, two of which are absolutely essential and one that maybe isn't quite what you would be expecting from Shaw's movies, but is definitely still worth checking out.

As you said - Mastermind has me the most interested from this lot!
I hope we get some more announce to join these three but they’re still solid and interesting choices if these are the only one. Also hope both regions get to enjoy these.
Glad 88 films is back releasing some SB films! Haven’t seen any of the upcoming releases but looking forward to Spiritual boxer 2, and to kill a mastermind.

me too Carman! very excited about Mastermind and Shadow Boxing, not really very curious about Golden Lotus but i don't want to break the chain of numbered spines from 88's shaw's range, so will likely end up getting it too.
The Ziieagle box has around 200 never-on-disc Shaw movies in its 668 titles, including a ton of martial arts films and lots of other cool stuff. This is probably the first one to be released from it, so at this rate, we may get the rest within the next two hundred years or so. 😄

Great! I have a handful of the original run of Shaw Brothers releases from 88 Films. I’m excited for The Golden Lotus because of the Jackie Chan bit role. I have the IVL Taiwan dvd release of this and the movie is kind of fun but lots of nudity. I’ve been thinking about the possibility of this getting a solo blu ray. Alongside this one hopefully they also release Facets of Love also from SB and featuring Jackie Chan.
I know this will sound contrarian, but I appreciate releases like The Golden Lotus because they are not action/martial arts films, and due to that fact, they are mostly ignored and never released on home video. Hong Kong cinema is much more than just an endless barrage of kung fu flicks, and anything we get outside of that genre should be celebrated, not Pooh-poohed.
I agree! I do hope I didn’t come across as dissing Golden Lotus in the video! Just want folks to know what they’re getting into if they choose to pick it up.
What's going on with the numbers?, the last release we got was 36 Flying Guillotine Part 2, but these release are numbered 38,41 and 42
so where's 37,39 and 40.

I'd love to see all of those getting bluray releases! I've not heard of any more Chang Cheh on the horizon from 88 anytime soon though i'm afraid. But never say never!
Pre-ordered To kill a Mastermind once it was announced. Never heard of it but it seems to get a lot of praise online. I'll pass on the other two releases.

I emailed them around a month ago asking if they were going to be releasing Shaw stuff again and they told me to keep an eye open. This is indeed wonderful news. Golden lotus is basically a sex film, Jackie Chan is in it but he only has a small part, ohh err missus! It's an OK film, I am pretty sure it's connected with Outlaws of the marsh, but I could be wrong.
I love Spiritual boxer 2, long overdue. I see Spectrum films have a Lau Kar-leung set that also features Cat Versus Rat, although not one of his greatest I am hoping 88 put that out as well.
But as you say the big news is To kill a mastermind, I have it on dvd but the print is rubbish, even though it's subbed. Why Celestial never remastered it is just a mystery because it's excellent, not quite up there with Avenging eagle but then few films are. I still rate this as one of Sun Chung's best. Cheers for uploading mate and spreading the word!
i'm right there with you re Cat vs Rat! I want to get Lau Kar Leung's entire Shaw's filmography ported over onto bluray, and we're getting very, very close to that being reality!
@@TheFanaticalDragon once Spiritual boxer 2 gets released, we only have Cat versus rat and Lady is the boss, which is bonkers how no one has picked that one up. I know Shaw dabbled with films set in the modern times, but that movie really stands out way above the rest of the 80's output. The final fight in the gym is just incredible. Fingers crossed my man!

not yet mate no, it's not playing over here, How was it? is it a remake of the Japanese movie from 2009?
@@TheFanaticalDragon - It appears that yes it is based on the same screenplay used for the 2009 Japanese movie that you refer to. I thought it was below average. YMMV.
When will they release in 4k?
I only know of Lifeline, the Johnnie To shaw brothers firefighters movie making it onto 4K so far. Not sure the Shaw’s titles sell well enough for the small boutique labels to be able to afford to put them out on 4K. Wouldn’t expect it anytime soon.
@TheFanaticalDragon im sure classiss like master killer or 5 deadly venoms, etc will sell extremely well in 4k. I hope they dont decide later on to release in 4k when everyone is moving to 8k.
Way much better than the so called American martial arts Garbage and terrible Hollywood knockoffs courtesy of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean claude van damme, Wesley Snipes, mel Gibson, Chuck Norris and Bruce Willis who rely on autoaim when they fire a weapon that cannot hit a target practice and deliver ridiculous punch lines with parody catchphrases
