    Funny you should mention that. The well-known legend we have in Russia actually tells that Ivan ordered to blind the architectors, so that they can't build anything as beautiful ever again.

    According to legend, when Ivan the Terrible asked the architect of St Basil's if he could ever build a great cathedral, the architect, aiming to please Ivan, said of course, whatever he wanted. Ivan had him blinded so that there would never be a cathedral greater than St Basils.
    Winning this game and being the best architect might not actually be the best outcome here

    I can't imagine how your group was forgetting to roll the dice. Surely the fact that they're dice is an adequate enough reminder that they need to be rolled; I spent the entire review wondering how the dice were going to get rolled because it seemed rather important.

    • @SystemOfStrings
      @SystemOfStrings Před 3 lety +12

      I had a similar experience, but maybe it's WHEN the dice are supposed to be re-rolled that makes you forget? Will have to wait and see until I've played it...

    • @hipposhaped
      @hipposhaped Před 3 lety +12

      @@SystemOfStrings That's exactly it - you move the dice, which is a calculation in itself, then when you've done that you get to choose things and calculate some more stuff and when THAT'S done, it feels like the end of your turn, so rolling the dice feels like an admin-y afterthought. I don't know what the designers could've done though, since it does need to happen and doesn't fit at the start of the next player's turn or in some other phase or whatever. Turn to turn, the flow is really nice otherwise and you get invested in what other players do since it massively impacts the board state.

    • @chefrude
      @chefrude Před 3 lety +5

      @@hipposhaped I think its just part of clean up after the market action, and I personally found it very logical. If you take it as part of the themeing, consider this, which is why it made so much sense to me:
      Its a way of replicating the idea of supply and demand, based on who acquires what. In standard small markets like this, if all the wood gets bought, someone has to go out and cut more wood, so there might be a scarcity for a bit. That's a way for the game to replicate that sort of idea.

    • @DagarCoH
      @DagarCoH Před 3 lety +9

      It fits nicely in my (still to be rigorously examined) hypothesis that rules tend to be forgotten when they follow some satisfying action. And that is even when the forgotten rule favours the player who should follow it
