Lake District Walks : Sale Fell

  • Sale Fell sits on the edge of the English Lake District, and only six Wainwright fells are lower, but it is one of the finest low level Lake District Walks in the Northern Lakes, with stunning views over Bassenthwaite to Skiddaw, Ullock Pike and Dodd. The Helvellyn range sits nicely in the background. For a Lake District walk, the going is easy, with no crags or scrambling, so it is ideal as an introduction to the Lakeland Fells for children, especially if accompanied by their grandparents!

    What a wonderful series of Lake District videos, Eric. For weeks I have been viewing one after the other. They have become a main source of inspiration for a planned two-week holiday in the Lakes this coming August, postponed from last year. Let`s hope that travelling and holidaying will be possible again throughout the UK, as of old. Greetings from a German follower.

Very much enjoy your enthusiasm and your love for walks and hikes... hope you are doing well in this day and age and looking forward to see if you will be back at some point to do more walks and to entertain and never the less educate us on the wonders of the Lake District. :)

      Thank you. It is not a good one in strong wind and rain, especially if that weather is from the west or north west, as there is virtually nothing in the way between Sale Fell and the coast. I can imagine that being an interesting experience. Whilst filming I met a local man who was walking his dog and I commented on how quiet it was, despite the good weather. He said that in poor weather there are often more people on the fell and his theory as to why was that they are on holiday and want to walk, but it is too wet and windy to go higher. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your return visit.

    Another great video ,like you as a younger man only the high fells would do , I haven’t been on Sale fell but it’s on my list ,I still do some fell running and that looks perfect terrain ,that’s the biggest ie tallest gate I’ve seen on the fells .Brilliant 👍

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you. The gate is a deer gate, made high enough to stop the deer jumping over it. You might also occasionally see walls with stone attachments that can be used to erect a temporary wooden deer fence, the principle being that wood was easier to erect than stone. I think Sale Fell would be good for fell running, although I have to say that I haven't seen many runners on there.

      Thank you Mark. It looks like a great area to live. As for the gorse, well I wouldn't like to be going down there on a bike and come off half way down. That gorse sure is thick, but people clearly have fun doing just that. I could have gone a bit further. Wainwright mentions an old abandoned silica brick factory, near to Wythop Hall. Every time I go over there I make a promise to myself to check it out, but never have done. I'm always drawn to the view from that seat!

    The views over Bassenthwaite are fabulous. I walked up Sale to finish my latest walking trip to the Lakes a fortnight ago. I didn't take the route you did as I was pressed for time but I plan to walk up Sale again and hopefully see the church ruins etc.

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  Před 5 lety

      A nice little fell to finish on. You can reach the old church either by following the route on the video, or actually following the path that skirts the fell, avoiding the top. I always think it is a wonderful fell for a nice sunny afternoon stroll, although it's position to the west of the other fells means that it can get some very brisk winds across the top. Sorry to hear your latest walking trip has ended. I imagine you will be looking forward to the next one.

      That is a wonderful effort on your part. Sale Fell can not only get rain, but also tends to suffer a bit in windy conditions, as the video shows. Having said that, down on the other side of the fell and along the stretch to the old church ruins is usually very calm and peaceful. It is such a shame that you have not had better weather, but regardless of that you are not letting it put you off. Well done. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

    Looks like you had a fantastic day, barring the windy bit at the top of the climb! We have fallen foul of place names, and I empathise completely; love the way you handled that. Great view for a sandwich! I think our dogs would love to follow this route, Sarah :)

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  Před 6 lety

      Thank you Sarah. Actually, regarding dogs, I think I should have added a bit on the video that it is one of the few fells in the Lake District without a stream, the only one being at the other side, near to the old church. So if you bring your dogs, bring some water. The wind was annoying, since it was not forecast to be that bad, and a couple of days later it had evidently calmed down again. Place names I am forever getting wrong. I know the proper way to say them, but I slip back into my old ways. Age has not improved me! ATB Eric

I try to show the region to its best advantage, but the simple fact is that it is so much better in reality than on screen. If you do plan a trip, May and June tend to be best weather wise, and the spring flowers are wonderful at this time of year. • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  Před 3 lety +1

      With it being a mountainous area The Lake District does not have many low level country walks that are almost entirely flat. However, there are some which you may be able to complete depending upon your ability and the length of walk you can undertake. Lakeside walks are probably the best for you, since they are mostly flat. However, most of them are not entirely flat, so it really will depend upon how long and steep an incline you are able to manage. I have filmed only one short, level walk. The walk from Bowness Bay to Cockshott Point. It is just over a mile in total, and about as flat as any in the Lake District. Start from Bowness Pier. The video ends half way round (don't ask!!) but you can continue on to make it a circuit. A little longer, and with just a few inclines on the route, is the walk around Tarn Hows. It features a short, steep drop down to the waterside path, which then goes around the tarn, however there are some short inclines. I managed to push someone around it in a wheelchair, (only needing assistance at one point) so not too bad, and very scenic. A little longer is the walk around Buttermere. Approx 4 miles, with some moderate inclines. One drawback to this is that at some times the water level covers the path, so you need to climb the banking beside the path to get past. Unfortunately, I have not filmed this walk, but a quick search will find others who may have. I have filmed the circuit of Rydal Water. It is relatively short, and a route avoiding the steepest incline is possible. From White Moss car park there is a path through the woods which does climb the slope, but when you reach the gate at the top you then turn left and walk down to the Lake shore. Follow it along, and at the other end go through a metal kissing gate into woodland, through the woods, over a bridge and then climb a short slope to the road. The return via the route on my video is one option, it has a couple of short, steep inclines, or alternatively you could return via the path beside the road. Again, not level but not terribly steep. I hope that helps you.

      @elegantinfusions Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you for a great and informed response, I will look into those area’s you have raised, I was thinking more of the lakeside walks, on a good day I suppose I can do 7 miles, but then with some short rests I am sure I could try a bit longer. That gives me some hope of being able to enjoy the area.

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  Před 3 lety +1

      @@elegantinfusions If you feel you can do seven miles, with only moderate and short uphill sections, then the walk from Patterdale to Howtown along the shore of Ullswater may be worth considering. It does have inclines, particularly at the Patterdale end where it skirts the foot of Place Fell, but it also has stunning scenery. It was Alfred Wainwrights favourite low level walk. The return is by one of the Ullswater Steamers from Howtown back to Glenridding pier.

    Absolutely brilliant, would you mind checking out our new channel, you have inspired us to start doing what we love in the Lake District.

    • @jonathancraigguides
      @jonathancraigguides  Před 6 lety +1

      Had a look. The key part of the whole process is encapsulated in the statement 'doing what we love'. What you are doing is sharing that enjoyment with others. A quick look through You Tube will tell you that the most popular Lake District fell walking videos are the wild camping ones. What that means is that there are plenty of people out there who either also do what you love, or who would like to do it, but for various reasons, are unable to. Both groups will watch your work, and if they enjoy what they see will subscribe so that they do not miss any of your videos. So, subscribe to all the wild camping channels, watch their vids, take a little inspiration from them but try not to copy. Establish a 'unique selling point', an element to your vids that sets them apart from the rest, then simply let your channel develop naturally. It is tough going at first, but gets easier as you get into your stride. Your number one priority is not to gather lots of subscribers, but to develop your own unique style. Once you have done that, subscriptions will follow naturally. Above everything else, enjoy what you do. I look forward to watching your channel grow.

      @feracastracamping9061 Před 6 lety +1

      jonathancraigguides really appreciates, like you say, enjoyment first, subscribers would be a bonus but by no means a necessity. A good walk for you would be up to the hidden cave at Langstrath, I’m sure you know it 😊
