  • Taking a look at a pretty well made one here, looking at a few ideas that went into the installation that makes this a pretty good trap door.
Really like the tiles that almost makes it a hidden trap door, if I had much poorer eye sight I'd say it is a hidden door.
Also looking at the latch for the handle which is a real great safety feature.
and lastly a quick tour of the basement.

I just bought my first home a very little home built in 1910 with a dungeon trap door to the basement and I’m tellin you it’s a cross between Silence of the Lambs or a concentration camp 😳
I haven’t been able to see it in person because it’s very far away and the realtor made a video for me, and said the door is very heavy and I’m 60 so I’m looking for an invention to open it easy, ran across your video, believe me yours is beautiful compared to mine. Yikes LoL 😂
Happiest of Holidays to you and yours ❤️

Your video is the closer I found to my situation. can you please share the size of the top rectangle opening? I’m worried I don’t have enough head walking space at the entrance.

Is the length of the opening perpendicular to the floor joists or it doesn’t matter? It looks like it in the video but it’s a glance so I can’t be sure. 😊

If you don't mind me asking, what's the length of the door? Is it long enough to walk down relatively comfortably without hitting your head? If not, how much longer do you think it would need to be more comfortable?

Did you find an answer to that question? I really need that information

How long and wide is the trapdoor? And where the floor joist cut? Thanks

How hard would it be for me to install this myself with no experience

The actual stairs wouldn't be hard at all if you can follow plans and basic woodworking practices. BUT, if there is no framing for the opening in the floor joists, you don't want to be grabbing the saw unless you want your floor to collapse. It has to be framed properly to handle the dead and live loads on the floor (meaning you need an architectural engineer or architect to draw up the plans).
Also, you need to check building codes in your area and contact the building inspector. Even though, this "trap door" type basement has been around for eons and is a wonderfully efficient system without wasting space, the building department and code committees want to run your life for you. It won't pass modern residential code unless you can convince your inspector that you are building a "crawl space" or a "wine cellar." If he/she thinks it is going to lead to an habitable room... no dice. Aren't building codes wonderful? They want to save everyone from themselves and turn every house into an inefficient, bloated castle. Compact spaces and efficient use of floor area is forbidden.

    TRAP DOORS ARE DEADLY
PLEASE - ADD A BARRIER or DANGER SIGN that automatically raises as the door is opened. The cool door has extreme dangers. People walk on these doors a 1000 times a year without thinking it may be open. You may notice when street crews work inside manholes they surround them with barriers to prevent pedestrians and cars from falling in.
My friend opened her door to the laundry room where a contractor from the previous day left the floor-door open to the crawlspace 4' down. She walked in carrying her laundry basket blindly stepped into the open floor. Result: compound femur fracture, broken ribs. She was there for over several hours when a neighbor happened to stopover. Otherwise, she may have died a slow death.
Why do you think they're called "Trap Doors"

my dude. this is so right. I have one that's right inside the back door in my house. wasn't paying attention one day and went to go out the back door... almost needed stitches, nowhere near as bad as your friend... but I'm certainly a lot more careful now.

I'm sorry for what happened to your friend, but if I had contractor's in my basement I would of checked their work and made sure the door was closed when they left.
Unfortunately that was her mistake in her situation.
      "Be careful first"
      I hope she's ok now❤️
