5oz!! Wow! The packaging is fantastic. Really cool design. Well balanced. Effective use of texture and negative space! $695!?!?!?!??!! Ooooooohhhh my! And for that reason, I am out. I wonder what this value would be at 11 years from now. REALLY nice look!
I thought you might appreciate that design! It's often hard to pick with the 5oz coins but there have been several releases which have performed very well over the years following their release. Although it'll be interesting to see in this case given the absolute saturation of the market with various designs and colours coming out. Although so far this design is by far my favourite! 🥳
Yeah, It is fantastic...I have been underwhelmed so far with dragon designs. Rwanda and Bhutan are my current favorites for mass produced 1oz stuff.@@ThompsonsCoins
One of the best aspects is shopping for silver and then getting commemorative coins at spot price. I have several now and they always make me smile. @@ThompsonsCoins

Looks fantastic! I must admit, not one I'm purchasing (If my wife is reading this: Honey, I saved us $700! - She'll be so proud of me) - and I think there is probably a bit of overkill in the "Year of the dragon" this time around, although I must admit that is particularly as a PNC collector (Any PNC videos coming?) AusPost just released a handful of Year of the Dragon PNCs including a very nice medallion, and also a $140 1/2 oz silver coin - now they are about to release five more 1/2 oz silver coin PNCs at $140 each AND another five regular PNCs. I'd actually rather ditch all those and get your 5oz coin :)

The PNC market is getting saturated in my opinion at the moment and it's definitely a reflection of the year of the dragon mania that seems to be in full swing with the market.
I just encourage people to do exactly as you're doing, collect at your own pace and enjoy yourself and don't worry about keeping up with every single release as it's becoming near impossible 🥳
@@ThompsonsCoins with anything non-circulating, I think you just HAVE to collect only what you like / is within your budget. collecting "everything" just isn't feasible. I like non-circulating pieces like this 5oz beast for the art, but I've always had a different appreciation for circulating coins where mints can make something beautiful even with so many more constraints (from, the coin itself has to last in people's wallets for 30 years, to "we can only make a certain number of circulating designs this year, so we need to choose"

Probably the nicest design out there. What I envisaged the Perth Mint lunar would be (since I thought they'd put 2 creatures on the silver coins), which unfortunately turned out to be dud (in my opinion).
Btw Niue is pronounced "New-A" not "Newy" :)
The Perth design has grown on me a lot but more so as a standalone release, it doesn't feel like it fits in the context of the whole series III lunar style so I must agree with you!
Yeah I'll never get it right, I wrote it off when I managed a coin shop in Sydney and had two different people give conflicting information but it looks like you're right according to google! 🤣

I have the 1 oz version of this
5 oz coin is certainly larger than my 2 oz silvers but it's good to see that the coin collecting hobby caters for so many people! I generally buy RAM silver proofs of our former and current Australian currency coins and some of the "commemorative" ones. To be honest I get a real kick out of showing people my .999 encapsulated limited mintage's of our beloved Australian decimal coins. Cu and CuNi proofs are nice but you can't beat the bling of .999 silver versions of the same coins.

I think it was EMK, New Zealand don't actually physically produce coins, they are more of a retail mint 😊

I don't understand how an official coin of a sovereign country (Niue) can be commissioned by a private company (Downies) 🤔
I'll do an explanation video on that at some point in the future, it's a great question! 🥳 Ultimately, they are non circulating coins so there is no risk on a bank run of these coins and the Niue government benefits from the arrangement too.

Fantastic coin Matt but as you say those of us on a budget need to watch what we commit to :) I would love to own a larger coin on a huge planchet (spelling?) as a display item. The silver and the gold colours really look good when used together.
