    I don't agree at all that French cars are only bought because of their design. My personal experience over many years tells me something different. I bought a 4 year old Peugeot 106 XRD with 60.000 km. And drove it for 8 years and about 160.000 km. When I sold it, it had 220.000 km. I basically just had to change the oil and wearing parts. At 160.000 km the clutch had to be replaced. At 180.000 km the rear axle had to be fixed. At the end I sold the car to a man who commuted to work and back home every day with it for about three more years. The car then was 15 years old and had run more than 250.000 km. Without any major problem. The diesel consumption was between 4.5 and 5.5 liters per 100 km. The car had a very nice equipment for its time. The design was very elegant, I prefer these classy understatement cars. The small 106 definitely was one of them. You still could feel Pininfarina. Only some German car mechanics turned up their nose at the Peugeot. Almost 3 years ago I bought a new Peugeot 208 ehdi 92. I have driven nearly 60.000 km without the slightest problem. The car is just perfect in every aspect. Design, comfort, handling, space, safety, fuel consumption (4 to 4.5 liters per 100 km), perfect seating position, excellent quality (in comparison to other cars in the segment), very flexible diesel engine. I haven't found this kind of outstanding overall package in any other super mini. It seems like the perfect son in law: good looking, competent and reliable.

    I love Peugeot cars, mainly because they have a great design but also because they usually are better equipped than other brands. However, the new restyled 208 Fèline has a little more technology than the former version but no leather seats anymore! (at least in my country, Mexico) That made me decide to buy another brand this time.

    I bought a 208 GTi last week. I love driving it with its small racing styled wheel, and the power of the engine is making me fun of all other GTi cars like VWs, Renault GTs and other same category hot hatches. I also love the interior, though GTi has its leather racing seats different than regular models. I am happy with 208.

    Peugeot always catches my eye because they are strong in the two points that I take into consideration when buying a car which is: diesel motor and design. Best diesel motors in the market a d design like it was a premium brand, and even better. That's why Peugeot is always my choice.

    Congratulations to the German people receiving cars made with impeccable finishing, the accuracy of the details in carbon fiber only demonstrates the concern of Peugeot to meet an audience as demanding. Too bad that here in Brazil do not treat us the same way, selling griffe cars that do not compare to the allures of the European/USA market. (sorry for bad grammar)

    I was rather hoping they would do something with the instrument bezel for the facelift. Always found it awkwardly positioned in relation to the small steering wheel. Also the glossy trim on top of it would just produce glare and result in fatigue on sunny days. This coupled with details like the weird execution of rear door, sunshade handle and uneven trunk floor with the seats down give impression that the car is not very well thought out. Certainly not up to German level of precision. However I do like the look of it, especially in the three door guise. Would take mine without the green inlays on the exterior though and in that wicked new orange colour. Great review as always.

    Great review!! I have not driven in 12+ years. I drove my Mom's Golf MK2. Only thing that gets me is I feel any dash is huge and I don't feel confident behind the wheel. It was like that with the golf but I got used to it. Can you tell me how tall are you? I'm 5ft 9 and I sat in a 208 last night at our dealer. I felt the inside was huge but you look like you were sitting quite high up so you can see above the dash. Can you tell me if it's just me and that I will get used to it?

  • @ManiPulatoR84
    @ManiPulatoR84 Před 8 lety +2

    You sure put in some work to make this review, nicely done!
    I don't agree with a few assessments from your side, though. I mean, you seem rather tall and the front seat was adjusted for a driver of your size. Under these circumstances, I don't really expect you to feel comfortable sitting in the back row of any car in this segment. Neither in the 208, nor in the Polo.
    Regarding the manual rear windows: you can order power windows if you wish, so it's not like there is no alternative to the manual windows. And the thing about the electric stuff being more prone to failing... well, I've had to deal with malfunctioning crank mechanisms in the past, so I'd rather say that if there are moving parts, then it can potentially fail, manual or electric.
    And that "door closing sound/feel" thing... were you comparing it to other cars in that segment? I mean, you are regularly (or mostly?) reviewing cars that cost more than real estate, so I'm not sure what to conclude from your statement in this regard :P
    Still, it's a solid review (IMO), enough to get a good first impression of that car. Keep it up!
    Cheers~

    Other than that, I liked the review, but I would like to see demonstration of some of the ECO features like for example the smoothness of the Start-Stop system or whether these cars have regenerative breaking. Also, it would have been nice if you presented the real fuel consumption at the end of the test-drive / review (even though I know that there are many factors, which can effect that)...

    • @altern8ive
      @altern8ive Před 9 lety

      i wish fuel consumption through a test was more publicised too. even if it were taken as a ball park figure at least it would be an indication of a realistic real-world number unlike the one's generated by a manufacturer

    French cars have lot's of electrical problems, their automatic gear is horrible, the finishing is bad & flimsy, but French knows how to design cars ;-) thanx for the nice review Thomas...

      Ich als Deutscher fahre seit 1985 Peugeot und werde Peugeot fahren bis ich nicht mehr Autofahren darf. Aktuell fahren wir einen sehr zuverlässigen 12 Jahre alten Peugeot 208 eHDI. Noch nie ausgefallen mit mittlerweile 120.000km auf dem Tacho und schafft TÜV immer ohne Mängel. Als Zweitwagen fahren wir einen 21 Jahre alten Peugeot 206 CC mit 135.000 km auf dem Tacho und ohne irgendwelche Mängel

    Nobody buys French cars for performance, reliability and other practical reasons, it's all about their design, basically they're a fashion statement. Some love it, some laugh about it, but their looks sell the car. Cheap build, but cute, funky design for a decent price. If you can afford replacing it after 2-3 years, you can stick to French car brands, probably. Fashion comes, fashion goes, so you can't have it forever in your garage, like a RollsRoyce. :))) Great review, Thomas, as usual! Cheers!

      ***** Very well said. I love the design cues and unique features this car has for its class. This is definitely a sub-compact (almost micro) class vehicle. To fit four German auto reviewers in this car, the two in the rear may need to consider amputation to fit snugly.

      Aleksander Wilkowski Intended to be pratical, yet fail because a cheap build can't last too much. You can just as well buy Dacia Dokker or Dacia Lodgy, just as practical, as cheap build, and under 10,000euro. However, I can't buy anything from Dacia or from any other brand that can match the price and the design of the 208 that Thomas reviewed above. So, you buy a Partner or a Berlingo because it's cheap, even though, funny enough, there are similar quality, cheaper ones like Dacia. This cars are not practical-they break easily, not reliable-annoying to keep it in service more than on a road, poor resell, and evidently, they lack in performance just as well. If you have a business that matters to you, using French brand cars is definitely a bad idea. I think the people buying an intended practical French car are doing it because they're attracted of cars like this 208, as well. They may not be aware of it, but I think that's what sells a Partner or a Berlingo. Cheers!

      ***** the french cars have a good reliability .look at this reliability index of warranty direct : www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer .
      french car brands are in the average.
      Don't forget that renault works with Nissan and they share the best .
      Now PSA peugeot -citroen have choosen quality instead of cheap price . In any case they should take a german adviser , their product would be ameliorated because germans love to care details !

    Hallo Thomas, gruesse aus England!
    Definitely zwo, null, acht statt zweihundert und acht - weil es Mundvoellig ist. Also, regarding BMW nomenclature, zB, a 330i, you'd say "three-thirty i" - or just a three-series. Englisch wird oft abgekuertzt.

    Als Frau muss ich sagen dass es mir mehr ums Preis-Leistungsverhaeltnis geht, der Stauraum muss praktisch sein und es darf gern Spass machen. Runde Form spricht mich nicht immer an, es kommt schon drauf an. Bei diesem Wagen gefaellt es mir nicht.

At the end I sold the car to a man who commuted to work and back home with it every day for about three more years.
