Buen Provecho!
My mom made this on our extra poor days, when there was no money to buy meat. It was always my favorite, she made it with French fries, but i made mine with fried maduros. Love your personality, you are a pleasure to watch.
Thank you! Same here, there was no money but the memories were amazing.
Mine too 😅❤ even tho it was the poor meal my god sister came over one weekend calling it cat food my mom said if your hungry you’ll eat it!!! She tasted it and never looked back 😊
That’s the only way I ever had it 🥲. Always fried French fries. Best cheap meal ever
Ian married to Puerto Ricoan and had to learn to cook your PR food. Thank you for speaking English , I understand alot of Spanish in cooking food, but not enough to complete a recipe success. Thank you. My husband likes your food.
Im black women and only speak a little Spanish but my ex. Boyfriend showed me how to cook a lota p.rican dishes of there food. And i can cook any dish of p.rican food that my ❤desired. And ww have adult son that p.rican and black and i have showed him how to cook the delicious meals. And yes his favorite is pasteles and rice and beans. Empanadas and plantains and more he loves to eat and me to. And i love all freaking Puerto Rican recipes as well. Thanks for sharing this recipe with us..👍🏽✌🏽🤗❤💕
If the key breaks off again use a can opener next time. I know from experience 🤣🤪 I also bang on the caldero😄 congratulations on 100,000 subscribers 🎉🎈❤️
I recomend not to add salt.... this is to high in Sodium
Wish I would’ve read the comments first I’m making it now 💀
Very salty as is
@@Missthatgirl634 yea I’ll remember that next time I make it
@@yourname427while IS salty - the starchiness of the rice works well with it
Yeah, way too many extra ingredients and sodium in this one, the beef in itself is salty already, just a pinch of garlic dust works wonders
I'm born and raised in the Bronx but when I retired I moved to Cleveland Ohio to be next to my sons. You don't know how much I miss going to all the Spanish restaurants in New York City. Listening to you cook and explain all the ingredients remind me of home the Bronx. Here in Cleveland you do have your Puerto Rican communities not a lot but enough where I can go to certain grocery stores and get mi comida. Keep up the good work with your video; you're awesome. You make people feel like we're all family..
Cleveland Rican here!
Dave's Mercado 😊
It’s called corned beef because the brisket is cured with large salt grains the they call corns.
Thanks didn't know that.
its called corn beef because the brisket is cured. And yes the bang on the pot is a puertorican thing.
I would like to as if you ship pasteles
corned beef got its name from the dry curing process used to preserve the meat. A slice of beef was covered in “corns” (large, coarse pellets of salt), which would draw out the moisture and prevent the growth of bacteria.
Yep, there's no corn in it... if that was the original question?
I remember my Mom used to make corned beef for us. It was so delicious. She used to add potatoes,& platanos maduros sometimes. Since I watched this video,I'm going to make it for the first time at my home.
Rellenos de Pana stuffed with cornbeef is a must have at any chinchorro in P.R and washed down with an ice cold beer , kola champagne or malta india
That sounds amazing!
Sounds so good!
You have the key upside-down. I'm an old woman and I got to say this. You are to freakin' cute. Such a handsome young man.
Yes, key is upside down, then twist to the right.
Yeah, you have to take the key off first. They still jam sometimes but it would have been easier. Also, I'm an old (straight) man and I think you're okay looking but you're no Amaury Nolasco? 😊
Awwwwww yes he is too cute
It's hilarious how he's struggling with the key.
Bro you did the biggest mistake in the world by you using that knife you’re able to put shavings of that metal into the corn beef should’ve just used a can opener on top of the can with the wide side…It’s happened to me where the key is messed up and I’ve had to use a can opener on the top of the can somebody take his Puerto Rican card
Good morning
I’m going to have to make this today it’s one off my childhood favorites.
Girl! I was literally...drooling 🤤😂! I’m like well this is what we’re having tonight! 🥰
I’m going to as well 😃

I laughed out loud when he mentioned that adding too much water would make it look like dog food! When my kids wanted this dish they would always ask me to make the dog food for dinner! They would often take this into school as their lunch and I had to tell them not to call it dog food when they ate it in school because we did not want DCF showing up at our door asking us why we served our kids dog food.
😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 yooo I'm dead
😂😂 My stepdad is Italian and had no idea what this was and asked my mom "what that dog food looking dish she made " was
When you’re going to open the can first take the key off the hook. Turn the key so that the part you hold is facing the wider part of the can, place the key back on the hook it should work. You just need to turn the key around prick the can on the other side with the sharp side of the bottle opener to let the pressure out.
mariclar53 Exactly what I do.
I was just going to make this comment for anyone looking. I learned the hard way many years ago when I was a teenager. lol
This is so funny! I decided to make this dish today -2 years later-and I had to remember how to open the can:) Exactly as you explained! It turned out delicious, tho' I didn't have maduros OR potatoes-but I added a little scrambled egg, and chopped onions...Soooooo good!!
I'm a cook too. Don't sweat it, your the best when it comes to Puerto Rican cooking.
Still old school, use a can opener, it's easier
You are supposed to take the key off, flip it right side up, and then screw it so that the wide part of the key isn't hitting the can.
Awww sweet ... as I was watching I’m telling Derick to the tv screen just what you explained ☺️😊
I was about to say that
I always use a can opener.. LOL. I never knew this but will try it. THX🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤣😂🤣😂
I was going to say that too
Yesss yesss ... I had to learn the hard way - If I am not mistaken I believe the can has the instructions with pictures too.
Every time I make some corned beef for dad, I will watch this video for guidance. It doesn't matter how many I watch it 😁 I'll watch it.
Thank you soooo much for watching Raymond! Make him some pasteles or pernil next! Dios te bendiga!
The British invented the term “corned beef” in the 17th century to describe the size of the salt crystals used to cure the meat, the size of corn kernels. After the Cattle Acts, salt was the main reason Ireland became the hub for Thank you for sharing your video I watch you every time you posted a video and just started following you watched all of your videos I think you are amazing #Thefreakinrician keep up the amazing cooking

You should of said” it’s so freakin perfect “ ! Lol 😝. I’m drooling here at work now. Came right on time because I had planned to make corn beef after work. Love the sweet banana in it myself. Good taste!
My Abuela used to fry up some potatoes and add them in, did anyone else have someone that did that?? Thank you for sharing your delicious recipes with us!!
I add potatoes in the cornbeef
I make mines more or less like you but without the platano.
My husband NEEDS papitas fritas in it....I thought it was weird because my mom never made it like that but then i saw a lot of other ppl putting french fries in it.

My pleasure!
I barely comment, but have been around for a while always watching your videos. so happy you made it to 100,000... well deserved!!!!!!!
My mother used to add potatoes and it was my FAVVVV 😩😩🤩🤩😍😍 I loooved potatoes in Puerto Rican dishes like in chicken stew I love how it absorbs all the flavors 😝😋❤️
Also because the potatoes absorb salt, it helps the corned beef dish not be sooo salty
My mom would actually put a can of corn in the corn beef.
Me too delicious
Me too. Also instead of corn, green beans...so good
I like it through all the salt😭
My ultimate comfort dish. I've got my momma on standby and have this video in the background. I'm attempting this for the first time in my life. I'm 46! Thank you for posting!

Omg now I gotta call up my abuela to make me some 🤣😩 haven’t had this in a long time. Idk why this showed up in my suggestions so randomly!
We love you!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for your wonderful recipes.
I sometimes add corn and sometimes French fries. I will definitely try the sweet plantains. Thank you Derrick for those great videos.
You are so welcome. We make them with fries as well, going to have to add some corn.
This is the first time I ever added maduros and it came out great! Was never a fan of potatoes in my corned beef. The maduros add a sweet savor to it.
Isn't it delicious. One of my favorites.
Why oh why am I watching you at 4:30 am? I don't know how I got here but now I'm sooooo hungry I can smell that wonderful smell in my mind. Yum 😋
Since COVID I’ve been making this almost once a week. Those cans are always stacked in my area of Brooklyn. Oh I figured out that you’re suppose remove the key, turn it upside down and turn it with the edge of the can. Also one thing I love with Corned Beef are fries with them. Fresh made fries adds so much to the combination.
Love your recipes. I grew up with all these dishes. And living abroad can get lonely. But whenever I miss home,.I cook these dishes and it gives me a sense of home and much comfort 🥰
I know how you feel. I live in Greece and can't find the verdura I need unless I go to Cyprus or Crete.
I have been wanting to embrace my Boriquen side especially in the kitchen and mi espanol is only so so. Thank you so much for creating the Freakin Rican and i will be liking and sharing all of you videos and checking out your website. I just love ya ❤😎

Ahora aprendí a hacer corned beef sin q me quede salaaa jajaja gracías x compartir congrats x su 100,subcritores ❤❤❤❤🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
My mom's full blood PR. She used to make the best rice abs Vienna sausage. The key is the capers and green olives. She has dementia now, but we did cook it together so I knew how to make it❤. She remembered alot. I had to use the pilan to smash up the sofrita.. she's old school🙂. She made this as well, but never with me. Thanks for the recipe. It too looks like dog food just like mom used to make😂. But it's soooo damn good. Another quick dish she made was white rice topped with fried egg over medium. Love my momma
Nothing like those family memories to keep us going through difficult times.💖
I have added shrimp to it 😋 and I also had made corn beef empanada with chopped boiled eggs like two and slice thin on plate and put on top of the meat and some cheese and it’s delicious you can leave the egg and cheese out if you don’t like it but it’s so good 😋 I like to invent es muy bueno 🤗❤️🙏🏻
I have never seen anyone season corn beef with sofrito sazon or any other seasonings other than salt and pepper. I would like to try a forkfull of someone else's plate to see if I like it lol. I sautee a chopped onion, add the can of cornbeef, then I add salt, pepper, a can of salsa then I fry a cubed potato on the side and add it to the cornbeef. Then I fry up some maduros and decorate the side of the plate with them and serve with a side of corn. Hey, I'm open to trying your recipe!! After all food from our heritage is the BOMB!!!! 💕
We have this at least once every other week in my house. EVERYONE loves it!!!!
My first time commenting, although I have been following your channel for a few months now. I love your recipes, but more than anything, you just make me HAPPY. You are funny and real and just plain silly sometimes--("ok: now it's THREE oz of water"...I cook that way, too) Keep up the good work and congrats on your subscriptions. EVERYONE needs more reasons to laugh in these trying times!
I love your food. You're the best.
Do u put onions olives. Wow sweet plantains never heard of that I usually do it on the side🙄🇵🇷🤣
My friend always puts potatoes with the corned beef
Lol! That blooper is a great promotion for the sales of those knives. I loved cornbeef growing up. My mom made it all the time. My kids grew up loving it too. 🥰
I love it.. I love comb beef...
I always did with potato
But now I'm going to do it with yellow phantom..TK..you...
Queen..N.y..
One of my childhood favorite dishes
Omg!! I grew up eating corn beef and till today still love it. I prepare it just like you. I too bang my pots as I cook. It is definitely a Latino thing. Lol. Love watching your videos. 🥰
I’m glad you mentioned banging on the pot, I think everyone does it and it’s ok as long as you DON’T BANG MEDAL ON GLASS, words from my DEAR MOM.
delicioso!!! I love watching your videos. So much flavor and humor. Buen provecho!
Love the corned beef, is very flexible and full of flavor. I have tried it in many combinations, corn, papas fritas, cubed papas, guineo maduro, platano maduro, yeah and I love banging the pot. 😅🤣😂
One of my favorite dishes growing up as a teenager, my mom use to make it at least once a week for me. Haven't eat it in over 25 years because I didn't know how to make it. The only thing different is that she never added tomatoes or maduros to it, she did it with French fries instead. About to make this soon 🙏
Love everything you make and congratulations on the 100k subscribers!!!! Me and my husband love your recipes, your definitely my favorite chef by far, stay safe!!! Oh n hitting the pots is so funny, my mom did and so did my husband's Lol and now I do it and didn't even realize until my hubby said something😂💜
I was in tears laughing so hard because we’ve all been there with that stupid key! LOL!!! You’re the best!!!!! I think I might need that knife though!
Pulled up you video and just finished making this dish. I love when there is leftover so that I can make a fried rice with the corn beef and rice.
Gosh..reminded me of my mommy..olives..have to add green olives..lol..so good
Why It's Called Corned Beef

Your tube ooks really wonderful... Will try to cook this for family soon... All the best... From The Far East... (1st July 2022)
*** Hi hi Excellent chef and coach,
Wanted to try cook and cook soon... Then I saw that I do have a can of Libby's corn beef... It was in my pantry as a back-up for Covid pandemic (and should I be quarantined at home for at least 10 days if caught Covid)...
Watched your video yesterday.
Today, 2nd July 2022, Saturday... I cooked it following your Utube coaching as close as possible for my senior parents who are both 86.
We do not have Sofrito here at all ...
So googled to see the ingredients of Sofrito and added...
It tasted really so wonderfully nice with one rather banana added (so happen to have just one banana left... ) ...
Heaps of thanks for your coaching...
All the best and God Bless... Pang,
