  • @andyelliott3198
    @andyelliott3198 Před rokem

    While a driver is applying the brake during corner entry, the throttle is at zero percent, but the internal combustion engine is still revving at a lower RPM or nearing idle. In a non-hybrid race/road car the unused energy from the rotating crankshaft within the ICE would typically be wasted during a braking phase. The MGU-K rotor and stator system "captures" this "wasted" rotational kinetic energy from the crankshaft and power cables take the captured energy (electricity) to the energy store. On throttle, the MGU-K draws electricity from the energy store and energises the stator spinning the rotor, which in turn adds additional rotational energy "torque" to the crankshaft>gearbox>driveshaft>rear wheels.

    I'm just wondering if it has a single ratio between crank RPM and MGU-K RPM or is there something like a CVT to keep it spinning at its most efficient RPM.
    I do also get that a CVT would in itself reduce the efficiency at a certain ratio and the mass and reliability concerns probably nullify any benefit as well as not really knowing the rules around this, it could well be illegal for all I know.

    • @rbgosling
      @rbgosling Před rokem

      It’s just a constant ratio. Unlike internal combustion engines, electric motors are effective over quite a wide range of speeds, so there is no need to try and keep it in a sweet spot. Also, since it is directly connected to the ICE (rather than the gearbox or wheels), it’s easy to ensure that the electric motor is at its ideal speed when the ICE is also around its sweet spot.

    I thought the kinetic energy dissipated through the brakes raising temperature (thermal energy), how is is possible to convert that energy in mechanical energy (torque to the generator) providing electrical energy? Is it mechanically connected directly to the braking system?

    • @gbspikyfish
      @gbspikyfish Před rokem +1

      It's connected to the rear wheels, so if used as a generator it will provide a braking force as torque is required to make it spin. Essentially - put electrical energy into the MGU-K and it'll provide additional torque to the rear wheels, use it to generate electrical energy from the spinning rear wheels and it'll provide a braking force (torque) to the rear wheels.
      In an ideal world, teams would be able to harvest from the front wheels too, but that's not allowed under the current rules.

    • @andreabianchini53
      @andreabianchini53 Před rokem

      @@gbspikyfish I didn't asked this, that reply was obvious from the video explanation. Also it is said that MGU-K is mechanically linked to the front section of the crankshaft to provide the extra torque not directly to the rear axle. I repeat the question, what is with the mechanical device or mechanism able to convert the thermal energy from braking to a torque to the MGU-K acting as generator unit?

    • @gbspikyfish
      @gbspikyfish Před rokem +1

      @@andreabianchini53 whilst you could use the MGU-K to provide torque to the engine with the engine disconnected from the gearbox, the point is providing torque through the crankshaft, the gearbox, and ultimately the rear axle - so for the purposes of its use it's connected directly to the rear axle. As for converting thermal energy from braking; as far as I know there is no such technology on an F1 car. Even the MGU-H (Heat) is actually harvesting kinetic energy (the spinning of the turbo).

    • @rbgosling
      @rbgosling Před rokem +2

      Nothing is harvesting heat from the brakes. Instead, this is like “engine braking” - the rear wheels are slowed down not by the brake pads, but instead by having to push the crankshaft, and thus the MGU-K, round. Of course this creates another challenge, since there are three methods of slowing the car - front brake pads, rear brake pads, engine braking via the MGU-K - and these have to be balanced to keep the car stable under all braking conditions while still harvesting the maximum energy through the MGU-K.
