I am so happy to live in this time that I get to experience this first hand. I hope that younger people will appreciate that they have this to look back upon. Steve is truly brilliant.

7:32 - Steve may be referring there to the instrumental break in Can Utility that begins at about 1 minute and 50 seconds and concludes a little past 3 minutes into the song. Absolutely brilliant and right up there with Firth of Fifth as being one of the finest pieces of music created by Genesis. Really nothing else quite like it in all of rock for the reasons he talks about here.

I went to see Mr Hackett in Santiago a couple of weeks ago playing with an Argentinian tribute band - Genetics. It was wonderful to see him here again (last time was pre-pandemic) and it really looked like Steve enjoyed playing the Genetics. Thanks for making the effort to come all that way to play for us Steve!

Oh dear … as rambling as I’ve ever heard the great Steve Hackett. Oh well, he’s earned my patient listening… thanks for the interview!

Let me be the first to comment on this. Gregg, you've interviewed Steve before, but there so many questions I would ask him should I ever get an opportunity. Firstly, does he have to pay licensing fees to Banks/Rutherford, etc.., to perform the older music? Secondly, If he would ever consider playing "Trespass" which I think is a great transitional album by Genesis. Even though Steve wasn't in the band at the time, he does occasionally play "The Knife". Hearing his current band play "Visions of Angels" or "Dusk"/"Stagnation" would be refreshing indeed.

I don't know if I could find an official declaration from anyone in the band to this effect, but to answer your first question, I doubt he would be paying fees as he is formally an equal songwriter on most of it (everything until ATTOT) along with all the other classic era members, so he wouldn't have any obliugation to pay any fees to reperform his own work, at least any more than anyone else would. I expect rather than faffing around with fees at this point they would all just give each other carte blanche to perform what they want.

Well, since you're just "some guy", without any real knowledge of what you say, I will speculate that Steve was NOT a principal writer in the band...did he make suggestions? Sure he did, I'm sure his creative output was very valuable to the music they were constructing, but I will keep that question out there in hopes of an "official" answer. You have to remember that they sort of elbowed him out of the contributors process, sort of like John and Paul elbowed George out of the way. And I'd still like to hear Steve attack "Trespass". That's probably a bigger hill to climb, seeing as how Steve would have to learn all of Anthony Phillip's parts and adapt them to his style. It can be done!

@@timwhite5647Dude, equal writing credits, look at the record, your starting point in speculations is incorrect.

There must be a performance royalty to all songwriters.

Bach Rocks and Steve Hackett is the best. Genesis became great when Steve joined and creatively declined when Steve left. IMHO
