    This makes me wish I had the equipment to drill my own stuff. I learn quite a bit from this channel and it would be cool to be able to put it into practice.

      So spendy, the plastic gauge to mark the ball costs like $75! Ridiculous markup in that industry.

    Back in the mid 90’s I used to use a router and then the back of a hacksaw blade to scrape and then the sand and polish etc.

    yep in a few short months this hole plugging will need to be done by alot of us! I'll have like 3 balls that will need this done to make em' legal for next season!

    I just started plugging my own stuff this week. I've been doing my own drilling for a few years, but as a lefty it's easier to sell my old used stuff if I plug it in advance. My first plug job was alright, but my plug cutter is apparently garbage... it would barely cu the plug. So I used a router to do the job, and it caused a couple of small divots in the surface or the plug... not a big deal, but makes it look bad.

    The plug looks like CS Hybrid - famous for the annoying white fringe around the plug. I use a converted spray paint pressure vessel big enough to put the ball in to squeeze those little bubbles out of existence. Works great but it requires an air compressor.

    I use to use a bevel knife. I’ll try that scrapper. Thanks JR

      I found bevel knives can sometimes leave decent side grooves

      Side grooves? Like a flat spot?

  • @lionstigersbearsohmyanimal6741

    I know if I start at 1000 there are usually lines on the ball on one side.

    JR, have you used a Haas machine with diamond cutting wheels to round out the ball?

    • @tylerstine784
      @tylerstine784 Před 4 lety

      Best way to do it my friend. I cut the plug down then sand by hand smooth with like a 320 then put in a haus machine. 1st gen work my way back up to factory surface you just have to run it on the haus long enough to pull those 320 scratches from where it was plugged out of the ball. The only method I use. Fast effective and I have to do such little work. The haus does most of the work with a flip of a switch

    • @seanmullins7009
      @seanmullins7009 Před 4 lety

      We used to do that and I agree it does most of the work for you. However, it wasn’t until we realized how thin the logo engravings were getting that in effect we had to take into consideration that we were probably greatly decreasing the life of the cover stock as well as ever so slightly making the balls circumference smaller. Moot points perhaps but it was enough to decide to go ahead and use a similar method described here. But love the razor blade trick Jr. thanks

    I have an Idol that I absolutley love throwing two handed. I need to plug the thumbhole to make it legal. It there a way my local pro shop can plug the ball so it maintains its shape?
    Or will the characteristics of the ball change.

    • @deadpolymers3416
      @deadpolymers3416 Před 6 měsíci

      Simply plugging the thumb hole will cause the layout to change, because the center of grip (or the center of the mass removed from the ball) will move. The VAL angle will shift upwards 30-45 degrees, making the ball react slower to friction.

    "Making it look presentable" or "pretty close" is setting the bar low imo. See many flaws in this technique...color match is more difficult with solids but this wasn't even close to correct. A better result is attained by hand without the spinner with the razor, then use pads paper and compound to complete.

      Read the damn topic. Wow get it together. If you felt this you’d see it was perfectly smooth. Yes there’s more to getting it to look better but that’s not the topic. Stay on topic
