  • My undergraduate dissertation at St Andrews in 1998 was a comparison of War and Peace with the movie adaptation by Sergei Bondarchuk. The movie is now available to watch for free on Mosfilm's channel and it's been an absolute joy for me to watch it again after all this time. And, they've only gone and remastered it!
I'm reading the novel along with Simon Haisell's read-along and, of course, it's got me looking up the movie again. I read through my old dissertation and it dawned on me that I could evolve the whole project by using my channel here to explore more comparisons and get to know the novel in a new way.
    So here we are!

Very interesting Cam. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts. I hope to get to War and Peace later this year

Love, you video. I saw the video of the film some years ago, but must watch on YT. I'm reading War & Peace for the umpteenth time, but love doing the slow read, but the reading horses are champing at the bit, wanting to race ahead. Fortunately I haven't caught up with the slow read yet, so not a great problem. I'm so glad I subscribed to both Crime and Punishment and War & Peace.

I had no idea there was a movie! I usually avoid filmed adaptations until I've read the book. But if you are recommending the movie then I may make an exception. Realistically, don't know that I'm ever going to get around to (and have the guts) to dive into this book. But if the story intrigues me enough, maybe I still will.

Yes, and I am absolutely recommending the movie. It's superb. And with classics novels like this, it's unusual to have a movie adaptation that is itself a classic of its medium. The book and the movie both reward multiple passes, so dive in and enjoy the film.

Thank you...I loved this so much. I'm on the hunt for this book inspired by you, of course 😅. Hooked on the Penguin Deluxe Editions 😊. And, yes, plz share them w movies. I've been comparing movies to books I'm reading. I learn better this way.
