    In today's video, I'm back in the darkroom making full prints of Shannon, S-i and Holly and I talk through some of the techniques that I've learned so far, including using pre-flash and diffusion.

      I’m afraid I don’t have that much experience to be able to make that video! I’m still learning and documenting my journey.

    If you're going for 35mm RA-4 printing, definitely try some Ektar 100! It's got virtually no grain and I love the contrast and saturation (maybe not a portrait-oriented film, but that's up for debate). I've printed some in 8x10 and loved the results!

      Oh amazing! I’ll give it a go, thank you for the recommendation!

    That’s very cool. I didn’t even know I wanted to experience this until now. I have to give it a try. Thank you for sharing, I love your stuff.

    Wow! I do a BW course here since 2002 with a lapse of 5 years or so. It's mostly the same people, all having 3 enlargers in their basements. We also do manual splitgrade, what makes pictures pop a lot more. Never did colour though, but will try colour film development soon. I have 3 rolls waiting...

      Ooh amazing! That sounds great. I'm still very early days with learning to print and I haven't tried black and white yet, but it's something I want to do shortly. What's splitgrade/how does that work? Thanks so much for watching!

      @@SophiaCarey first you do a teststrip with Grade 0 and choose the time that the picture appears. Then you do a teststrip with the chosen time 0 completely and Grade 5 in steps. Then you decide on the exposure times. For me on 13x18cm from 35mm it's mostly 2 and 8 seconds. If the negative is too contrasty you can use something lower, like 4½, 4, 3½ instead of 5.
      There's also expensive machines from Heiland for example that do this automatically.
      The handiwork in the darkroom is very relaxing, a perfect opposite to spending the day at work behind the computer screen.

    hey sophia, such great content
    a quick question, what do you use to scan your prints?

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hey! Thank you so much! I use my Epson V600 scanner to scan most of my prints (unless the prints are too large, in which case I’ll use the larger Epson scanners at the darkroom!)

    • @Yairsigron
      @Yairsigron Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@SophiaCarey thank you so much for the fast reply
      Could you elaborate a bit more about the diffusen method, i want to buy the glass you talked about haha

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  Před 2 měsíci

      @@Yairsigron you use anti-newton glass and essentially move in front of the lens whilst the light is exposing the paper in the areas you’d like to diffuse. The longer you keep it there, the more diffused the image will be. It’s a little bit like dodging and burning but with diffusion!

    • @Yairsigron

      @@SophiaCarey such good insight to learn about it from pros
      btw, do you know which type of paper you are using? is it FUJIFILM Fujicolor Crystal Archive? if so which one (matt/glossy etc)

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  Před 2 měsíci

      @@Yairsigron yes, it’s the Fuji crystal archive, but I use a mixture of matte and gloss! Haven’t decided which I prefer yet
