    About the chant:
Αγνή Παρθένε (Agni Parthene; en: O Virgin Pure) is a stunningly beautiful hymn, composed by St Nektarios of Aegina in the 19th century during his tenure as director of the Rizarios Theological School of Athens. St Nektarios liked to compose hymns in honour of the Mother of God to nourish his personal prayer and that of his disciples. It is said that our Lady herself appeared before him, and requested that he record on paper a particular hymn the angelic choirs were about to sing. That hymn was 'Agni Parthene'.
Expressive, beautiful and elegant, this hymn is perhaps the most accessible point of entry into Byzantine chant. One hearing is often enough to set this tune in the mind of its listener, especially with its oft-repeated refrain.
Although sung and performed in many languages, the Slavonic rendition by the Valaam monastery choir (complete with bells) in particular has fascinated and entranced many - both Orthodox and non-Orthodox alike - much more so than the other versions. I haven't quite been able to explain why, but I suspect the distinctive style of Valaam chant produces an air of tenderness and supplication unheard in other recordings.

@@peri2338 we recognize mary, as a great example and believer, but theres not a single verse in the bible that tells me mary isnt sleeping right now. The bible tells us, that everyone who died is sleeping until our savior wakes them up for judgement day. I get that you guys say the church has more information than the bible, bit i simply do not agree. The original orthodox church did not pray to Mary or used her as a intermediary to god or jesus. I dont want to argue with you because i love my orthodox brothers and the orthodox culture, but if you only hsve the bible and dont believe in other sources, you can totally see why protestants think like that. God bless you and may jesus and the spirit divine show you the right path. Amen

It's not art. It's not a song. It's not great music. It's not meant to evoke patriotism (as said by a Swede!). It's not meant to calm & relax listeners. It's not meant to be background music while one plays video games. It's not about & has nothing to do with the spirit that appeared to Bernadette in Lourdes etc.--in other words, it's a hymn to one who is different from who papists believe is the Mother of God & therefore we are not venerating the same person.
(The above are things commentators here have said).
It is an Orthodox prayer, written by a recent Orthodox Saint & set to music by Orthodox monks, translated into every language spoken/used by Orthodox faithful throughout the world, retaining the melody of the original Greek chant.
Why listen to Orthodox prayers, if you are a papal person or something else, whose mind is made up? In other words, if you aren't dissatisfied with where you are & seeking the Truth? It's appropriation, no?
Non-Orthodox need to find their own stuff with which to amuse themselves/pass the time. Remember our doctrines are different from yours.

It's not meant to be background music while one plays video games. @@agiasf7330 Actually, we do venerate the same person and while it is true that this hymn has nothing to do with the visions given to Saint Bernadette in the nineteenth century, this hymn is about the same person that we venerate. We both believe that Mary is the mother of God, and we both have great respect for Mary. The only two things where Orthodox and Catholics differentiate with regard to Mary is the assumption and the Immaculate Conception. This song was written by Saint Nektarios of Aegina, an Eastern Orthodox metropolitan and a famous wonder-worker. Furthermore, while this is in fact an EO prayer, this prayer has been sung in Eastern Catholic churches.
I will agree, that it is a hymn, it is a hymn to one whom both Catholics and Orthodox venerate, one to whom we both consider to be the mother of God.

Who says other denominations cannot listen to orthodox? Are we not all United as believers and followers of Christ who died on the cross and saved us of our sins, and then rose again on the third day? As long as a Christian believes in the core doctrines of Christianity we should be United in Christ. How can Jesus Christ the churches groom be married to the church the bride if there is to much infighting with the church. Rather even we should focus more on spreading the Gospel.

*''Agni* *Parthene''* *(Greek:* ''Ἁγνὴ Παρθένε''), rendered "O Virgin Pure" or "O Pure Virgin", is a Greek *Marian* *Hymn* !!! The lyrics (poem) were written by *Saint* *Nectarios* *of* *Aegina,* in the late 19th century, first published in print in his *''Theotokarion'',* in 1905 !!!
The *Saint* *Nectarios* *of* *Aegina* (Greek born name: ''Anastasios Kephalas'', 1 October 1846 - 8 November 1920), was a Greek Bishop of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Metropolitan of Pentapolis.
He was also known as the Wonderworker of the Greek island of ''Aegina''. He was officially recognized as a saint by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1961. His feast day is celebrated every year on 9 November.
One of the many poems he wrote is "Agni Parthene". According to a tradition passed down on the island of Aegina, St. Nectarios reportedly composed the text for this poem after having seen a vision of the Theotokos in a dream where she asked him to record this poem.
The Original Greek script can still be viewed on his prayer table in his bedroom at this monastery.
The Original melody to this hymn was composed by a hymnographer, in Mount Athos, Greece, who is said to also have had a vision of the Virgin Mary prior to composing the work.
The recording of this melody by the Monks of the Simonos Petras Monastery, in Mount Athos, Greece... has contributed significantly to the popularization of the hymn.
The hymn became popular at the Simonos Petras Monastery and from there it spread among Orthodox believers in Greece and around the world and has been translated into many languages.
