Edit: A lot of people saying that Eda's voice in the test reel isn't Wendie Malick, I kind of already assumed that which is why I clarified using her name for the actual episode. Thank you everyone for confirming though lol, I wasn't entirely sure. When I said the voice was still "distinctly eda" I mostly meant the tone and inflections. The delivery has that Eda charm even if it isn't Wendie voicing her.
Honestly I really like the original voice for Willow but it also kinda reminds me a bit too much of Velma lmao
I can see why they changed it, Willow's final voice actually fits really well with her name and personality.
Also props to Sarah Nicole Robles for nailing Luz's voice right from the get-go lmao.

It's always fascinating to see how character voices and designs change and evolve from their conception to the final product. It's also nice to know that apart from the shirt, they pretty much struck gold with the main character the first time. Eda was pretty much perfect from the start as well.

Even during the final product, it's interesting to listen to the beginning and to something later.

No one really mentions this but I absolutely love the voice that Sarah-Nicole uses for Luz. It’s just so sweet and endearing and it perfectly embodies everything about Luz. I really hope she gets more voice acting roles after The Owl House.

How you explained EDA and how she “sells” her lines and how that is reflective of her being a con woman was perfect. And EXACTLY what I thought of when I heard the OG voice
I also noticed King's voice was deeper in the test. I wonder if maybe he was originally meant to be older - especially as Luz says he "used to know magic".
My guess is that he originally was supposed to be "the banished king of demons", but after they ironed out the setting they decided that the Titan thing would tie into the overarching plot better!🤷
@@BEE-oz7yd Yea, that makes a lot of sense! That's actually a really cool alternative plotline cuz like, who banished him y'know? So many possibilities there, but I'm also happy with what we got! :)
@@BEE-oz7yd I mean, all things considered, it's most likely that they realized the Titan could be considered the King of Demons, as supposedly the demons spread from its body. So perhaps it's simply how his "King of Demons" storyline was fully fleshed out-- they originally planned to make him just a powerful regular demon until they realized that there wouldn't be a King of Demons other than the Titan. Plus it's pretty clear they didn't have the magic entirely figured out by then--
I'm so glad they changed the name from paulina to willow it's very fitting to her, also love the fact they switched out the wands for what they have now because it's definitely a lot cooler

Yeah, they originally used wands but then they changed it so they use magic by drawing circles in the air which I like because it’s very unique and wands are a little bit cliché-
Also I just wanna say that it reminds a lot of how Ron Weasley from Harry Potter broke his wand and it kept backfiring lol-

In my opinion, pilot King sounds a lot more like Alex while King in the actual show sounds more like his own character/voice if you know what I mean (even though there is some Bill Cipher-ness in there).

Wendy Malick just kills me with every goddamn line. Episode 4 in particular was a standout for me... The way she says "painbows" and reacts to the shiny object just.... Perfection.
Alex toned down the squeakiness over time because King grew up. Our little demon became a de-man!

In case it was not addressed, the voice for Eda in this pilot short is not the same actress. She has a similar vibe, but it's definitely somebody else.
Well, we definitely needed this pilot episode to be shown. It's always fascinating to see how character voices and designs change. I have a feeling this would have been a much more darker show than what we ended up getting. I would've probably liked it . But Lumity probably wouldn't exist so I'm glad they changed direction.

I honestly really liked Willows original voice in comparison- still great in the show though. Also, I love that her name is Paulina- it just fits this more nervous and accident prone Willow
Even I have to admit, the Beta voices of all characters sound so good here. Well, Eda needs a little more work on her's a little better.

Yeah, Alex definitely toned down the voice cracks as the show went on, which tbf can be explained as a sign of King's growing maturity. His earlier voice sounds a lot closer to his many Gravity Falls voices, while in later episodes he sounds a lot more distinct. Beta Luz is almost identical, maybe just slightly younger and more bratty, while final Luz is still young but a lot sweeter.

I'm not even sure if that is Wendie Malick in the pilot. Rumor has it than Jennifer Jiles was possibly considered first before Malick was cast. Jennifer has a website, so maybe someone could ask her if she was ever Eda.
Seeing all this makes me upset that the actual first season’s potential was so badly wasted due to Disney’s intense meddling. 🙁

eda is sassy and sometimes rude but really nice in the show, but beta her just sounded like a plain rude karen. canon eda never thought magic was "dangerrous" and yeah was a lil rude to luz but not that rude, wendie malick eda is perfection

OK so, Willow had a whole different voice actor at the time. She had the voice actor for Bosha and Willow was originally named Paulina. The new voice actor for Willow is definitely more reasonable and pleasing to hear.
King looked like he got his head chopped off then sowed back together with a bears body. Im gladded they changed that.

The audio just wasn't edited. Most of the differences you're hearing came from a lack of EQ. Sounds like Wendie and Tati might have been on different mics as well. Tati in particular sounded like she was recording into a Snowball or something in her second clip.
