    I live in the North East of England and a hot day where I am is 13 degrees really hot is 16 degrees Celsius. My honey supers go on the Monday before Easter because that's when the garden centre along the road starts stocking it's flowering plants. The supers come off at the end of August and that gives my bees plenty of time to stock up until the garden centre closes mid October. If I waited for temperatures in the 20 degree plus range I would never get my supers on. My bees over winter in uninsulated hives, which sounds weird but they are on top of the dog kennels and that generates enough heat.

    In my area of Ohio up north, I don't even remove insulation until April. Being eager got me nowhere last year so this year, I'll be splitting in April rather than supering. The 80% rule still applies. My new nucs last year were swarming 4 weeks later. If I've learned anything, it's that being prepared is as important as being patient which is a delicate balancing act! We have lots of snow headed our way today and tonight......yikes!

      It's easy to get excited and anxious but you're right, patience is the way to go. This weekend's weather is grim. You guys up north have it so much worse than where we are. Right now we are getting just a sprinkle of snow.

    Very Informative, but unless I missed it, I don't feel like you answered your own question "When To Add Honey Supers To You Beehive".

    • @sweetbeefarms
      @sweetbeefarms  Před 2 lety

      It's not a clear, concise answer because there are variables from year to year and location but the things you want to consider in when to put them on is the space inside the hive, temperature and nectar flows. You don't want to put them on if there is too much unused space in the brood boxes. You can have too much space in a hive. The other factor is weather. You want to wait until the temps are consistently up where you would safely be getting in to them. If you put them on before the temperature increases, it can be too much space for the bees to keep warm.

      I always feel like the weather channel is a guide. Here in Ohio, it can be off by a lot. This time of year drives me crazy though. We get a really nice day here and there and it makes me start itching for summer.
