In college, I used to listen to this song over and over again on a loop while writing research papers in the computer lab. It seemed to help at 2 or 3 in the morning.
Stereolab, always dept, always surprise, always restlessness. Searching new musical horizons and playing joyfuly with limitations to break them in the next second where you already find yourself again in another sphere not having the time to realise that they changed directions again. Stereolab incorporates endless poetical creativity and emotional authenticity with a huge amount of sensitivity, curiosity and humour. Stereolab, I honestly love and adore this Band!
I think about her everytime I listen to stereolab. I met her after a show in 97' in Los Angeles w a friend trying to meet the band, blocked by an over zealous security guard. She saw us and invited us backstage to get autographs and such! She was genuinely awesome. I miss her too. Lala Mary was her autograph
Originally released on the Captain Easychord e.p., I always thought this was one of the greatest songs they ever wrote. Just a b-side of an off-album e.p.? Some of their best tunes were on e.p.'s and singles.... What a composition. It's put together, almost like Bach was writing a pop tune, a variation on a theme. Everything about it is clever and perfect.... The ending chords especially get to me, those minor chords.... then it's got that Dream Weaver synth at the end, which I really dig. Love Mary on this, gets me teary-eyed.... RIP.
Stereolab es un sonido que definiría como exquisito. No podría comparar con ninguna otra agrupación!!! Larga vida a la música. Larga vida al amor!!! Gracias por subirlo
After hours of analysis, I give you better lyrics: The skeleton was twirling in the sea For having been disobeyed to people The father had drowned his daughter's body No one could remember why exactly A lost fisherman thought he'd caught big fish The hanging bones were instead nightmarish He rushed back home with her caught in his line Lit a fire which appeased his panic Kind ladies untangled her from her cling To keep her warm with furs and hides Starting to soften in the warm silence Fell asleep untempted by her presence He was dreaming, a tear formed in his eye She saw it shine, suddenly felt thirsty Unfurled her bones, brought her mouth to the tear She drank and drank, it felt like a river Plunged her hand in and gently pulled his heart Powerful drum that would follow her prayer They woke up all entwined breath against breath Got up to head by the sea where they were fed By the ocean No they are not afraid death has its place In order to create, in order to live She'd beat the drum and would sing for new flesh Sing for her eyes, chubby hands, legs, and breasts All that a women needs would then surface She sang some more to bear her sleeping trance Slipped in back with him new skin against skin Returned the heart one magnificent drum
@@RalfAnodin I'm not sure why I selected "head" instead of "live", if it was in error or intentional. My process was to use phase cancellation to return only the center channel, which removes all the stereo instruments (guitars, and dreamy keys), then play it back at different speeds and also time stretch as well as selectively EQ. Sometimes, all the other sounds happening can make some words sound different, like a cymbal can make a word sound like it has an s sound that isn't there. I don't know if this is why I selected "head", or if it was a mistake on my part. These days, there are better tools, like AIs that can strip out isolated channels for each instrument. Maybe another analysis is due.

The last minute of this song always makes me feel so wonderful.

Es como si fuera un disco entero pero en una sola canción
This really is poetic and beautiful. One of their best tracks, I think.

i want to listen to this before i go to sleep peacefully:) It takes me to a very happy place:)
Sometimes I come across music that sounds as if it's too good to be real. This is that kind of music. Where has this band been all my life?
Love to hear Mary's voice, i miss her

One of their more mysterious tunes. When the bouncy, 70s electric piano part comes in it's startling, but in a good way!

RIP Mary.

The skeleton was twirling in the sea
For having been disobeyed to people
The father had drowned his daughter's body
No one could remember why exactly
A lost fisherman thought he'd caught big fish
The hanging bones were instead nightmarish
He rushed back home with her caught in his line
Lit a fire which appeased his panic
Kind ladies untangled her from her cling
To keep her warm with furs and hides
Starting to soften in the warm silence
Fell asleep untempted by her presence
He was dreaming, a tear formed in his eye
She saw it shine, suddenly felt thirsty
Unfurled her bones, brought her mouth to the tear
She drank and drank, it felt like a river
Plunged her hand in and gently pulled his heart
Powerful drum that would follow her prayer
They woke up all entwined breath against breath
Got up to head by the sea where they were fed
By the ocean
No they are not afraid death has its place
In order to create, in order to live
She'd beat the drum and would sing for new flesh
Sing for her eyes, chubby hands, legs, and breasts
All that a women needs would then surface
She sang some more to bear her sleeping trance
Slipped in back with him new skin against skin
Returned the heart one magnificent drum
Thanks a lot
Gorgeous song - my words almost the same as yours
Thanks! One note: instead of "Got up to HEAD by the sea where they were fed" I heard "Got up to LIVE by the sea where they were fed"
Years later, I hear there were a couple words missing, "to keep her warm CLOTHED HER with furs and hide"
