  • This video presents, from the beginning, the process of dumping or sinking the former Destroyer Comodoro Manuel Azueta, a vessel 94 m long, 11 m wide and 18 m high that the Mexican Navy decided to sink to become a reef artificial, in the seas of the Gulf of Mexico, in Antón Lizardo, Veracruz.

    This was originally the USS Hurst launched in 1943. It was sold to Mexico in 1973 where it served until 2014. The ship was then sunk and turned into a reef 2017. This ship had quite a long life being in service for over 70 years.

    We sit and watch this ship sinking , but we must try to imagine what it must have been like for sailors trapped on ships that got sunk during the wars. It must have been absolutely terrifying. 🇬🇧

      Exactly what I thought, I always imagined naively that I could escape a sinking battleship. But no, in a flash your room is filled with water, the floor is the wall and it’s pitch black, you have no oxygen and you have hatches and hatches to get through. It’s game over, unless you are topside or get blown clear of the ship in an explosion that doesn’t instantly kill you, you’re dead.

    • @dennied7826
      @dennied7826 Před 6 měsíci +4

      Craziest thing is that when they turn them into reefs they really have to try quite hard to sink them so you can kinda see just how much damage one of these could absorb, but just as well a few good hits could sink it.

      Smith got in the water along with Andrews at approximately 2 AM, as the bridge flooded they stepped over the bridge wing into the water and where never seen again. Well Smith possibly but it's only known as an "old gentleman" not confirmed to be the Captain. In that story an old man swam up to the overturned Collapsible B and asked if he could come aboard. He was told no and said god bless and swam away. But neither of them did the movie suicide thing. Once nothing could be done and all the boats were away and the final plunge began they did try for it. Joseph Bell and his staff were closer to that, they remained below keeping the power and pumps running. The final row of boilers (Boiler Room Nr.1) where not lit during the voyage however they were at the end to provide steam to the dynamos. When the ship broke apart at 2:18 AM the steam lines ruptured and the lights went out. Not bad... Costa Concordia lost all power within less than a minute of the impact, Titanic kept the lights on for almost 3 hours. Costa grounded or she'd have sunk in an hour with all aboard as the evacuation only began after the ship was blown by into the shore by the wind and grounded. Of course Titanic was an ocean liner not a cruise ship, they're built much tougher. An ocean liner has to be on time even if there's a strom. A cruise ship will never ever voluntarily sail into a storm, that's how you sink one.
