  • It's a snow day on Vancouver Island, which is the perfect time to start planning out my future garden beds. In this video I talk about square foot gardening and share my favourite garden companion plants that I combine when planting my organic raised garden beds.
Square foot gardening maximizes space, allowing you to grow more in a smaller area. It's efficient, water-wise, and encourages biodiversity. Gardeners are moving away from monocultures or row planting because they recognize the ecological benefits of creating diverse, balanced ecosystems. This approach mimics nature's design, fostering healthier plants, richer soil, and ultimately, a more sustainable and productive garden.
Companion planting just makes sense to me, and with a bit of planning you can strategically place plants next to each other to enhance growth, repel pests, and improve overall health. In this video I highlight a few companion plant pairings that work well together. When choosing companion plants I mainly focus on the plants that deter pests as I grow all organically without the use of any pesticides.

Finally someone new to the square foot gardening.
I started with it and then followed a lot of ther advice and workshops that also talk about interplanting etc and square foot gardening has a lot of upsides.
a few downsides too and a few things that i put into the category "teach them this so they can't fail, while it is possibly overkill..." so i am looking forward to a new set of eyes on the subject, and I wouldn't mind exchanging information and experiences!

Do you have any favourite companions that you like to plant together? I've been using this method for a few years now and I tend to focus less on planting a perfect bed following all the "rules" and instead focus on interplanting flowers and onions to attract beneficial insects and repel the others. And my tomatoes always get basil, does basil actually make tomatoes taste sweeter? I have no idea, but I like growing them together.

@@ecoendeavour I tend to ignore a lot of the "don"ts" and I emphasize on synergies like onion and carrots. One important thing though is the use og sun and shade, to make space for salads in summer and not blocking sun with beans and tomatoes.
I keep my tomatoes away from all the rest because i grow them in pots. never tried with basil though. just don't forget to give them some calcium amendment during the season (like eggshells dissolved in vinegar).
Also, borage is banned from my beds due to obvious reasons. Marygold, herbs and calendula are interplanted between the squares if there are singular plants. As is garlic. And if there were no diseases present, i tend to not to switch up the planting plan each year, since i replenish the soil with green manure, amendments and fresh compost/bokashi.

@@christophemossong5479 Sounds like you know what you're doing! I'm sure your garden is highly productive and beautiful. And yes, I save all my eggshells and grind them up for my tomatoes. What zone are you gardening in? Have you started any seeds yet?

@@ecoendeavour since I'm in Europe, we don't work much around hardiness zones, but it should be the equivalent of zone 8.
I did! Peppers, Eggplants, salads for a hotbed without the manure and some tagetes since slugs seem to really like my backyard.
