    I sold my rhodes, which I had brought with me from the States (where I had bought it for 175 dollars), to a Madrid buyer when I was living in Andalusia exactly 20 years ago for 1000 euros. How cool would that be if it was the same unit? I don't usually regret selling stuff but this was one exception. Wherever it is I hope my old Rhodes is being played and cherished like this.

      @@JuanMiguelTrad Hey hey, let's say it is ok! I didn't realize how much I'd miss the action, and the experience of playing it like the action and turning up the bass boost just right. Strangely despite its age it was almost perfectly in tune when I got it but the lowest G note didn't dampen properly and did a sort of harmonics-enhanced ringing with a wobble at the very end, it was totally crazy sounding, like something you'd do with a delayed LFO on a synth. Anyway your restoration and video was awesome & I'm gonna watch the musical section at the end again like about right now ;-).

    • @JuanMiguelTrad
      @JuanMiguelTrad  Před 3 lety

      Thank you so much again for so encouraging words, Nebula. Funny, the tunning in this piano was not a big problem. I've been told in the comments and via email that the sweet spot where the hammer tip beats the tine, can be heavily improved by simply moving the harp from the bottom side and this is something typical from earlier units like this one. I have this task in "due" yet. And Maybe this is related with that you said about the lowest G....

      @JuanMiguelTrad  Před měsícem

      You're very welcome!
      You touched an interesting topic though, Vintage Vibes probably don’t show everything in their videos, since that’s part of their business; however, keep in mind that they’re true professionals and I’m not at that level of specialisation.
      Althought I’m proud of the result and it’s valid to have the instrument ready to be played professionally, it’s possible that some of my processes are not the best ways to do some things. I’m more than happy to help others to put their instruments back to work, but don’t hesitate to ask VV or EP-Service or any other expert if you have dubts. 👍👍👍
      And…. Good luck!!!!!

    I saw my first Fender Rhodes in 1973 at a live gig I attended. I was a very young piano/ keyboard/ organ player in a pop band at the time. I listened to the sound of the Rhodes and it was really 'love at first sight/ listen'. At that time there had been no way for we piano players to bring a piano-like instrument onstage. There was the 'Hohner Pianet' but that was vastly inferior. The Rhodes seemed to fill the gap. However upon later listening to recordings by the likes of The Crusaders or LA Express, Deodata and others, I realized that the Rhodes, although it might be a piano 'substitute', was no piano 'replacement' Instead it was, truly, an instrument in its own right. I bought my first one a few years later. To this day when I see or hear, or think about, a Fender Rhodes it lights up the pleasure centers in my brain. Watching this video brought it all back. Great job!

    Eu acho tão impressionante quem compra instrumentos para reformar eles, é um talento incrível! Eu alguns anos atrás consegui realizar um sonho, de infância mesmo, quando lançou o Yamaha Fx-20 Electone em 1983 era fascinado por som de órgão, mas não tínhamos condições e eu era bem pequeno, só em 2016 eu consegui adquirir um Electone Fx-20 e eu consegui fazer alguns reparos tipo até limpar ele pois os circuitos dele estavam bem detonados e pareciam depósito de pó e poeira. O som dele depois voltou a ser lindo novamente, mas depois eu passei ele adiante... Me arrependo até hoje de tê-lo vendido...😢

    I am doing a Suitcase 88 Dec/Jan 2021. The Suitcase model has a thinner bottom plywood case bottom. I measured my harp with a straight edge because of escapement issues in the middle area. It was sagging 0.040" in the middle. Mine is REALLY beat but sounding nice and the Stereo pre-amp is very very nice. I have one Master Satellite Speaker- very ugly and heavy. I can hardly imagine it being of much use due to size.... I stretch tuned it I have lots to do as in rubber parts, lots of pitting /rust on the tines but the tone bars still look good. All pickups work.

    • @JuanMiguelTrad
      @JuanMiguelTrad  Před 3 lety

      Great, I hope you can manage to get it all done. And you're right about the usability and the size. I would love to put my tooth in one suitcase but, with a fender twin reverb the combo is more easy to manage, and sound is valved, so it's unbeatable. The presence of a suitcase in the other hand... wow.
      Best of luck!!!

    Today I found out that Bill Evans played the Rhodes as well. Thanks for a great overview and music selection! I've just started planning the restoration of my '77 Mark 1 and this video has been a great help! One thing I did not hear you mention is whether you replaced the tone bar grommets. They look new and I can already tell mine are completely worn and disintegrating.

    • @JuanMiguelTrad
      @JuanMiguelTrad  Před rokem +1

      Thans for your comment, Mvexel and good luck with your restoration. Tone grommets are all new of course. There's no possible way to recover a rotten, smashed or cracked grommet, and they are rather cheap, so... a complete new set had to be bought. Best choice! 👍👍

    Hey, this is an awesome video man. I intend to do all this to my 88 note 71-72 rhodes totally be referencing your video when get to it.
    I highly recommend trying a dedicated rust remover like "evapo-rust" instead of vinegar, it is reusable after filtering so very little waste and safe for all kinds of metal(chrome, steel, brass, copper) and most non metal substances like plastics and rubbers etc...
    Also instead of paint you could possibly nickel plate some of the parts. Depending on how thick the paint is, it could potentially dampen some vibration/resonance where as nickel plating is super thin(comparatively to even a single coat of paint), highly rust resistant and give all the metal a golden-ish luster. The paint you used may come off the springs if they are flexed too much since paint will fatigue faster than the steel springs but the nickel should be able to flex without damaging the plating. Nickel plating should not affect any vibrations or resonances, it is also ferromagnetic so if used on the tines the sound through the pickups should not be affected.
    Another option for a good coating for any steel parts would be Blueing. Blueing is the creation of black oxide on a part(as apposed to red oxide which is rust). They make chemicals which you can just brush on and will turn the exterior of the part into a hardened black oxide coating. This shouldn't change the dimensions of the part nor the weight at all as far as I know, but the very exterior will be slightly harder than it was before so this method would probably be best reserved for parts that need strength, rust resistance, but are not vibrating like tines and tone bars. Screws, the metal frame, and any hardware that has perhaps lost it's chrome would be a good location to use this method.
    Your tweed Rhodes looks amazing by the way!

      @@JuanMiguelTrad any tips on how I can go about snagging a 73 fender rhodes in fine condition without paying $7,000? I've heard the price range is super unstable, I've heard stories of people getting them for as low as $500 in good quality.
      I just don't wanna drop over $1,000 and still have to do restoration work. Really I have no idea where to even begin looking. I don't necessarily trust independent sellers on a site like reverb either.

    • @JuanMiguelTrad
      @JuanMiguelTrad  Před 3 lety +1

      @@largepoodle6036 Well, price is always an issue. In my experience, I confess I paid around 2200 €. It was almost unplayable, and this is Europe...
      I admit it was a bet.
      So, I would say it will be very difficult to find a Rhodes in playable condition for that low, sorry.
      I also heard stories about ridiculously cheap Rhodes, but with so much info available now online, I'd say that this simply won't happen very often anymore. Maybe in the States this should be easier because of the number of instruments left here & there, but still... I'm not really positive on that.
      Unstable? Of course! Rhodes are collector's items besides musical instruments, so price will always depend on factors like condition, but also the "will" of the seller. In my case I wouldn't sell mine now very easily, I can tell you that.
      Good luck on your Rhodes hunting! 👍👍

As a guitar player, I am not so good with knowledge on this Rhodes. I want to get it back to "Normal" playable condition. Your video is very good. I may try to do this myself. I have seen some kits for rebuild. Any recommendations? Thanks.

      I'm a guitar player too, although I keep piano skills from my early student days. And try to practice regularly.
      I would recomend what you are already doing.
      Some tips I followed were: Read a lot, get as much advice from professionals and experts as you can, watch a lot of videos, and have always your service manual printed.
      Ensure you can undo something critical before doing it.
      Spend some bucks if necessary, it will pay back.
      Be patient and careful.
      ... and most of all, HAVE FUN.
