- Away you rolling river!! This is an American traditional song that was often used as a capstan shanty. We’ve been singing it for years, and hope you enjoy this rendition

Gotta love when JD breaks out the bass voice, it's so good
THOSE HARMONIES!!!
An excellent arrangement. The blend is so good that I have a hard time distinguishing the individual voices.
a shame no one told them how to pronounce these words
I just saw them live last night, what an amazing experience! The fact that their opener was Sean Dahger made it even better.
Thank you so much! 🥰
I thought the concert was too loud and way too rock and roll. I missed the acapella stuff and the more folksy.
I saw them in Atlanta!
@@elicarlson7682 That's awesome! How was the show there?
@@markhaga8408 it was awesome! It was my first longest John’s concert and Sean Dagher was also great.
Brilliant - what u do best - simple and sweet - real singing and no faff 👍🏽👏🏽🙏🏽
Tell me these guys should collaborate with Geoff Castellucci without telling me they should collaborate with him.
You're not my boss.
@@Senthiuz Nor am I claiming to be.
I'm sure Adam Chance would be happy to introduce them, but I suspect we'll get a collab with him, and maybe even the rest of Home Free first.
@@sallymaria Hell yeah. Just a question of when.
@@sallymaria I wanna see a bass duel between Tim and JD
It is such a heartfelt, and beautiful song. And you did this tune honor, with this rendition. I felt the heart and soul you guys put into it.
Well done lads !
This was among my mother's favorite songs, so it will always have a special place in my heart.
Jumping it to say that, yes, the mispronunciation of Missouri is intentional. No need to correct them. They know. Just let it go and enjoy. 😁
Are you sure they know it’s wrong? Because I’m from Missouri and have never heard a mispronunciation like that before. Let alone an intentional one
Exactly! It's a beautiful version. 🥰 It's like with Rio Grande. I don't think the pronunciation matters. ❤️
@@dillonohlemiller401 They have discussed it on their live stream. They even tried it once with the correct pronunciation. It didn’t work for them, so they switched back.
I was going to mention that it was mispronounced, but you clarified it was intentional so ok. Also, this version is decent but the the best version I've heard is by: The Petersons'.
@@KweektheGeek I can really hear that "it feels right" element in the fascinatingly meticulous pronunciation of Shenandoah. It's "shennindoh" (with a little variation from local accent) to US southerners. Mentioning that only in case someone is curious b/c I FERVENTLY support TLJ's approach here. Forced duplication of a regional pronunciation in a folk/traditional song is awful. Getting reshaped a bit while moving from place to place is the lifeblood of these old treasures, and they did a beautiful job with an all-time favorite here.
This is probably one of my favorite American folk songs. Thanks so much for sharing this! Long-time fan from Oregon here!
I love that they're implementing a technique used in concert band! The lowest voices/instruments can often be lost under the others, so they are told to hold notes a little longer than others, which is what JD does
Across the wide Ms. Or Eyeeeee.
All jokes aside, I'd love to hear you guys sing the Kingston Trio version of this song.
This is a great cover of the song. "White Squall and "The Big Hewer" would also be great cover additions!
Would love to hear your rendition of "Red River Valley". Less shanty and more sad cowboy, but still, its a good song
Never expected ya'll would adapt this song, but I'm glad you did!
We need all these CZcams songs on a spotify album, these are some of my favorites. Also would love to see you guys do sailors rest or three fishers by Stan Rogers
First i love this song and the feelings you evoke with your amazing harmonies. ❤️ Second I got to see you guys in chicago roughly 27 hours ago and you knocked my socks off. The energy, the fun, the shared enthuseasim made me heart happy. Your showmanship and control of the crowd were second nature to you. Thank you for an awesome expereance. Please come back when you can.
Lovely rendition of a lovely song. Greetings from Missouri!
Adequate! I loved seeing y'all at The Sinclair last week!
Your lovely rendition brings me back to 1982, 5th grade choir, when we'd sung this as part of an America medley. I've never forgotten that the first verse, not for 42 years.
Classic, beautifully done. And RIP Dr Leonard Van Camp for whom this was his favorite piece and performed at his funeral.
Absolutely beautiful, October tenth!
Beautiful as always! Saw you guys and Sean last night and it was so much fun! Unfortunately it was super late and the line was crazy long, so I was unable to visit afterwards. Still, I'm ecstatic that TLJ has blown up like this and look forward to your next tour! Keep being awesome!
That line was WILD. I also just decided to head out lol
Oh, yes! I've been waiting and hoping for this song to happen. And now it will! In 88 minutes, apparently. Let's gooo!
Please do Antigua Gravyard next ❤
I feel these harmonies in my bones!
i love this song it makes Shenandoah feel like its in Ireland or Scotland, also if any one ever has the chance to got to Shenandoah DO IT, it's so beautiful.
Beautiful! Love those harmonies!
Saw you guys in NYC and Ardmore and the show was absolutely incredible, this is a great song and I’m glad to hear you guys cover it, positively adequate!
I am working on booking a trip to Shendoah now
This has been, and ALWAYS will be, one of my favorite songs they've ever done. Cheers, lads! 🍻
Such a treat for the end of a long day on the road! Hope y'all have safe travels for the final days of your tour
absolutely gorgeous!
I knew you’d do this beautifully. The last version I loved like this was Paul Robeson.
Beautiful! I love the simplicity, the powerful harmonies and the emotion. Thank you so much for sharing, lads. 🥰
Beautiful job! So has Robbie been cleared to perform yet? Saw y’all in Asheville, NC! Wonderful night with my entire family! A forever great memory made.
Yes, he made it for the Nashville show - they were lucky enough to get Robbie and Adam Chance...
Beautiful!
Beautiful
just lovely!
Next time you come to DC area you need to take a brief detour to the Shenandoah and tube down it (if it's spring or summer....)
This was gorgeous! I’ve heard a few versions of “Shenandoah” and not heard some of these verses before! The harmonies were lovely and really brought out the passion of this song. Kudos!
Love that song! So excited to listen to your version!
Love it
Saw you guys on Monday in Minnesota...SO AWESOME (and hilarious). You guys are my favorite band and incredible entertainers! I love your songs, and you do great credit to every song you sing. I've been dying to have you guys cover the Eerie Canal song (I think it's also called Low Bridge). It's perfect for you guys!
Well done, lads!
This was a beautiful rendition, still amazes me what you can pull off.
And I would be very interested to see your take on JT machinimas new Helldivers shanty. It's a bit different, but I'd love to see how you do it.
That was stunning! Those harmonies. 😍🔥
I always feel a little bad putting suggestions on these videos. Because I dont want to take away from the actual renditions you do.
However, still hoping you'll do a version of The Idiot. 😉 Or maid of Amsterdam is another great shanty I think would be amazing. Xx
Thank you - what a lovely noise
Started playing fallout 76 a few days ago and now here are the lengthy johnothans singing shenandoah
Have u ever felt to share some of the traditional old gospel songs ?
I know you probably won't see this, but please consider doing a cover of the old Scottish folk song, 'Leis An Lurrighan'. The best version to look up for reference (so far?) is by 'Scatter The Mud'. Its a song about a ship in a terrible storm. There's actually some debate about the title, which can either mean, 'With Lurrighan' or 'On the Lurrighan'. No one knows for sure if Lurrighan is the name of the captain or the ship.
This is the second song I ever sang in voice lessons
Stan Rogers- Field Behind the Plow
Would be great!
You guys should Cover Whip Jamboree
Wake up matey, The Longest Johns posted
Great cover! You guys should consider doing Bully in the Alley!
They kind of have. With home made instruments. It's an interesting one, but good!
😊
I love this. Amazing job as always guys. Any chance of a cover of Dark as a Dungeon or 16 Tons next?
Thanks for singing the Missouri State Anthem! (or at least the one that should be!)
Unfortunately the real state anthem is the Missouri Waltz... But yeah, this one'd be better.
@@dustydruid6670 I know that but this is the real one we should have. Much less racist than the Missouri Waltz
Agreed.
Please consider doing your version of "Find My Love" by Fairground Attraction!
I long to hear it!
😁
Also a good song
Still crossing my fingers for some House Carpenter!
Did you just make this song even more beautiful than it is on stream? I think you did! Andy's voice is amazing in this, and the harmonies.. ah, the harmonies. Melting my heart, you are.
I've noticed you've done a lot of my stream favourites in videos lately, which I very much appreciate. Does that mean you'll do Antiguan Graveyard soon too? I'd be very happy if you do. (and sad too, for reasons)
Seconding Antiguan Graveyard!
Thirding Antiguan Graveyard! I've been pushing for this one for months! Let's make it happen!!
@@gracehulbert7867 I've wanted it for ages, but keep forgetting to mention it. It's such a beautiful song, but it tends to make my eyes go all leaky..
@alvpyrola Same. I love the song! I'll hum/sing it(among others) to my nephew at naptime and usually end up tearing up. 😥
Yes, I will fourth Antiguan Graveyard. Beautiful and hideous simultaneously.
I’ve never heard it with that pronunciation of Missouri, (eee instead of a long i) but absolutely loved the harmonies.
Y’all should do next fortunate son by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Got my Fallout sensors going off.
Magnifique chanson qui a fait l'objet de plusieurs adaptations pas toujours faciles à comprendre mais tellement émouvantes.
Is it just me, or does this have the same melody as Wild Mountain Thyme?
@thelongestjohns I HAVE BEEN MEANING TO SAY THIS FOR AGES...and at the risk of sounding weird, I'm saying it.
So I was introduced to you guys by stumbling upon Oak and Ash and Thorn. Immediately fell in love with it. I immediately thought of my fiance because he and his three (very bearded) brothers all play music and sing. Two play guitar. They all also adore shanty's and so-called "mountain man music." Also their last name is Oakum, so it was like, "haha wouldn't it be cool if you guys did this?"
Then maybe 2 weeks later, you guys release the info about your upcoming album Smoke + Oakum. Again, I was like, "Woooooah, what are the odds of that?!"
Then you guys do this particular cover. My fiance belts this song in the shower ALMOST EVERY GOD DAMN DAY. 😂 He has relatives originally from Shenandoah.
Please release as a single
Can you guys upload this song to Spotify please
I read this as sheogarath and got excited thinking you did a skyrim song
You guys should do davoh kin
Oops, you've done it again! You take the old folk songs that I love and make then better. We can't get to one of your Canadian shows but come to Salt Spring Island, BC. It's an island of artists, musicians and hippies both retired and new. Congrats on this tour! 🍺♥
Here again requesting more Scottish songs - maybe Silly Wizard’s The Queen of Argyle?
This is the first time I’ve Missouri pronounced with a long i at the last syllable. It’s usually pronounced as a long e and occasionally as “ruh”. Where did you guys get the long i pronounciation?
So pretty! 🤗 where Iam at we kinda say it 'shan-an-doe-uh' & 'miz-er-ee' (not misery, kinda mizzz-r-ee) , but who cares? Pretty singing guys!
I've also heard it "Shannon-daw" and "Mizzou-rah."
@@dustydruid6670 How folks say things is so interesting! Relatives from Louisiana say 'the seee-ment is hot', vs 'the cement (sa-ment) is hot', or ones from Maine say 'did ya pawk tha cah', vs 'did you park the car' - Tx family is kinda 'how rr y'all do-inn' vs 'how are you do-ing' 🤠😀 I've heard 'Miz-rr-ah', & 'Shan-un-dah' too (how some, in Louisiana say it), fun stuff!
For everyone who is here because of "mourning becomes Electra" : You are not alone.
Why Missour-eye?
Sounds better
Ohhhh God!, I love it, but it’s MissourE we don’t pronounce the I guys
They know. The pronunciation is intentional.
@@KweektheGeek please elaborate on this. I'd love to know more!
@@Fluffcat65 They have discussed it in the past on one of their live streams, even tried it with the correct pronunciation. It didn’t work for them so they switched back.
We can't forget about the "Missourah" pronunciation either XD
@@dustydruid6670 true
Not first
Miz-or-ee... Not Levae-Oe-SAAAHH
Except for the mispronunciation of Missouri, good rendition.
Shen-en-dough-UH? Mis-si-soor-EYE?! What country are you guys from? Not America, that's for sure. At least you didn't use the awful British "I love your Nancy; she suits my fancy" lyric!
As a proud Missourian AND a proud vocalist, AND a proud community collaborator on your projects before. You are NOT doing this song justice. Missouri is properly pronounced "Mizz-ooh-rah" not "ree", not "rai" but "rah". And we don't like it when people get it wrong. ESPECIALLY with this song.
If they’re going to mispronounce the name of God’s Country, they could, at least, do it like a local! “Missourah”
“Missour eye?” I’m from Missouri. Idk where Missour eye is 😂
Sounds better
