- We feature a DIY composting toilet for boondocking and we also built in kitchen drawers in the back of our car with a handy cooktop and a place for our propane cook stove. These things make camping and road trips a lot easier with our converted cargo trailer camper. As usual we talk about being safe and self sufficient and show you our latest gadget which is a Utrai portable jump starter in case your car's battery is dead. Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. I guess I should have mentioned that you dispose of the toilet contents by dumping it in a plastic bag (biodegradable bags are available) and put it in a dumpster like a big diaper. Nuff said.

Peat moss bought in a bail is so dry it repels water until it sits to soak up liquid, it’s great for my bucket toilet, get it in the garden area, it is cheap and lasts a long time. It’s easy to haul around because it’s compressed. Coconut coir works good too, comes in small compressed bricks but cost more. Bales of animal bedding, which is wood shavings can be bought at a feed store cheap.
They sell toilet seats that snap on a 5 gallon bucket and it’s lid snaps shut, in the camping section.

The animal bedding is a great suggestion. Made just for the purpose! Major problem with peat
moss, aside from repelling moisture for too long, is that it's not a renewable resource. Sawdust, we got.

I don’t use it for camping. I mainly use it in winter. The battery is easy to dead in winter.

Kitty litter is a good absorbent, too
Sure does. It is what we use for our bucket toilet. We also line our bucket with a plastic bag prior to using it. Put the plastic bag in. A little base of kitty litter and there you go.
That's what we use. We have both the Reliance Luggable Loo and their hassock style. Had the latter for many years, used for camping and when the well pump or power fails due to storms. I use cat litter based on corn products and have recently bought one based on pine pellets to try. Read good reviews on those pellets. I also line each of these toilets with heavy duty trashbags, which does help to keep the toilet much cleaner and the best way we've found to empty & dispose of the contents.
That's interesting to learn. We quit using regular cat litter because of its weight and the fact that it turns to mud.
Walnut shell cat litter works for our cats. I'm allergic to strong fragrances, so I really like unscented natural litter.
Pine in itself well help with odour and minimising the growth of bacteria... but when I've used it for cats litter, it takes so much more to cover the poop (every now and then I can't remove poop right away due to physical health, so covering has to do as a short term solution)
I don't like admitting the above about myself, but see in this case how its relevance can be useful... I personally recommend pine sawdust, or soft pellets at a pinch. ... if I were camping, I'd probably use what nature itself has to offer and bury it 😊🕊💗🌏

Good to see that you are off to warmer climates. Like the improvements in the rear of your SUV, especially how you made it to hold your small stove. Definitely more stable and safer than those small stands they typically come with. You all be safe, soak up some Vitamin D and enjoy the warmer temps. I'll get there yet. Not this year, but I'm making plans for next winter, if the good Lord keeps me around that long.

Love your videos. Opti Idle is a smart idling system that was used in Semi trucks when I used to drive them. It was quite common. The truck would idle for heating and cooling purposes. It would also start up to protect the engine if the truck was not in use.
As for the toilet I built a toilet for my truck years ago and customised it to fit in a closet space. When I moved into my cargo carrier camper I customized it again a little and it is totally hidden. No smells and easy to access. It is a wood box. It has such a strong lid it can be used as a step stool or seat. Inside the lid is another lid. Inside that is a cut down regular bucket. When the internal lid is closed there is a steel removable sheet of steel which seals the hole. The regular toilet seat with its lid holds it in place. Then the strong main lid comes down. It just looks like a box with a a carpeted lid at that point.
I use a mixture of Tractor Supply wood pellets and ordinary kitty litter. Both very cheap and last a long long time.
Inside the bucket I use 2 plastic supermarket shopping bags one inside the other. They then go inside the bucket. The "handles" and the tops of the bags fold over the top of the bucket. Everything is trapped by the lid and sealed with the steel plate. To empty I lift the handles up, snip the sides of the bags and tear them down a bit. They are then tied up and placed in the garbage. Been using this method for 14 years and I have never had a problem.

I also paid attention to the one when your camper was stalked by a mountain lion. I also use a converted enclosed cargo carrier. 12x6 V nose. It is a constant work in progress and your video on making a shower was helpful. I used a different method but the principle was the same.
Horse-y girl here, suggesting instead of buying those expensive (by comparison) animal bedding packages for small animals, spend $6-$7 on a large, 3 cu. ft. compressed, bale of pine shavings you can buy at Agway or Tractor Supply for horse bedding. Just scoop some out in a bag or a small tub to take with you, and if you don't use it all and want it out of the way, use it to kindle a fire, as mulch, etc. On a bare stall, two bales shaken out makes a nice deep bedding, so there is a lot in one.
AND - Kudos for being the first people I've seen who are smart enough to use shavings or sawdust as 'bedding'. All horse folks know that with shavings, stalls don't smell like pee. With straw, you have absorbancy, but it stinks.

Once you have the final design down. You can cover and edge the surface and edges with Formica. Most any carpenter could do this for you. You could do it yourself also. Great idea you came up with to solve your problem.

As a prepper, i practiced with the same composting setup until the bucket was full, approx 2 weeks for one person, 1 week for two. It proved to be excellent. No odor, and easy dump into a dug hole on my property. Not messy. Women may need an extended urine diverter. I made one out of a female plastic urine funnel. I put on a camping toilet seat during and removed to set aside between uses. I like your idea of the gamma lid and will try it. I am happy to see your video and such great proven tips and tricks. In my off grid cabin I use somewhat the same bathroom set up, except I put extrastrong garbage bags, from hardware stores, inside my bucket and do both (businesses) in the bucket then toss it when it is full. I live in a forested area and their are a lot of sawmills and I purchase sawdust from local mills for ONE DOLLAR for a 50 pound bag. Thanks for your video.

I love the Galley addition. I have something similar for my tools, I cut strips of Teflon cutting boards and use them for slides. i have one drawer that's probably 150lbs and it slides like greased lightning. Also a bit of paste wax will help. just a suggestion.

We do something similar in our 6x12 but, no pun intended, we have started using pelletized horse bedding from Tractor Supply in the bucket. Works great! Come on over to Big Bend National Park about the first week in March and check out the desert bluebonnets and stuff with us...😁
We also did similar drawers in the bed of the pickup. Don't know how we did without them for all those years...
I'll look for those pellets to try. We'd love to see the bloom down there.

I have built a few of those cabinets with drawers for work trucks but never considered the camp kitchen add on 😃
We use cedar chips with bag in it for easy clean up.

She took a picture of the power pack so she could order one. I actually have three different ones and they all work, but this one is has the best features so far.
That other fellow with the pull behind likely had a solar setup with cables to the vehicle battery so the alternator charges his batteries when there is no sun

@@gonagain well I have a small hi low travel trailer and be I have a truck but my homeless nephews showed up at my door over a year an half ago the have issues and I’m trying to get them assistance and into housing so as I said I still have hope them being with me long term is not an option I want to downsize and sell my house and get out of the city it jus gets worse every day so I’m done I’ve lived in city my whole life and the trash has just move in my neighborhood I live in St. Louis Missouri 8 miles from downtown and the Arch so I’m ready I keep it I’m my mind I want to travel while I still can

It's actually a jump starter and will start your engine even if the battery is removed from the circuit. Pretty amazing for such a small device.
i could use one of those jump start boxes, I have a van with an intermittent parasitic draw I have not figured out yet. Nice drawer setup, the natural wood looks good. The Yukons are nice trucks. Stay safe warm and healthy guys

Parasitic draws are very difficult to nail down. They are often switches (mechanical or electronic) that have started leaking-by. This could be from a number of causes, but can become a huge nuisance.
Of course, some vehicle electronics remain "on" even when the engine is off and over long periods of no operation will drain the battery.
I guess this doesn't help, even though I started the reply with the intention of helping. Sorry!
@@billywills4391 Usually in the rust belt were I live it turns out to be a rear wiper that tries to repark the blade when it does not register that it is parked because of rust, but since it is parked already it heats up the wiper motor and runs the battery down. I have used a thermal scanner gun to find some, this one just never does anything when you try to look for it. It also will be if it sits for a week or more before it seems to run it down. I have taken to removing fuses and leaving things like the rear wiper fuse and tow connection fuses out to see if it does it again.

In semi's there is a thing called opti idle, which is controlled off the steering wheel by the driver. It will start and stop according too the desired temp the driver set it at. Can use it for ac or heat. It charges the semi's battery system as well. You should be able too Google different designs of it.

I get sawdust from Home Depot. Just go back to where they cut wood at the rear of the store with a couple of 12 gal garbage bags and they give it to me free. I'm sure the other box stores would accommodate too. You might consider making a top for the drawer on the left to double the countertop. Also make a hiding place behind the drawers for ammo, guns, etc.

Funny- your bathroom system is a lot like ours. But we use a porta potty for #1. And kitchen trash bags in the bucket are a lot easier for the clean up IMO.
We tried the bags, but they don't fit around the urine diverter very well for us.

Linda's a great cook but we keep things pretty simple on the road. Usually one pot meals to avoid a lot of cleanup. Maybe some dishes from home would be a good idea because she cooks Hawaiian, Phillipino, Japanese and other dishes because of how she was raised.
You and Linda are my heroes! The toilet idea is great. Love the kitchen update drawer and table..
Can you put together a video of Linda's preferences on cookware? And what you pack for a week or more kitchen and food. I bet Linda is the best cook. .

Hello Gail, thank you for a great suggestion for a video on Linda's cooking kit. WE have talked about whether or not we would like a bigger cargo trailer, but because of the back roads we always travel we decided that the 6x10 was just the right size. Cargo trailers are very easy to update and modify and we've been doing that right along. I already have a "to do" list for this spring that includes improved storage and seating, curtains, better lighting, some fresh interior paint and another roof mounted solar panel. Oh, here's kind of a biggie; I want to have TWO propane bottles on the front because I'm tired of worrying about how full the single one is and if we're going to run out at an inopportune time or not. I think that's number one priority right now.

Another great video, Rick (and Linda). Looks like you are doing well. Like your drawers, if carpet works let it be... I've seen some drawer units in 4Runner videos that have the standard side rails, pull out/push in with one finger.
Thanks for update on solar. I have added 2 100 watt panels on our new micro Minnie winnie but have not changed batteries to lithium or added an inverter yet. Assume you have one for 120v stuff, what did you get? We don't need a lot of 120 but some would be nice when boondocking.
For 120v I either use a small inverter (150watt) for my laptop or we use the Jackery 1000. Our needs are small. I like the carpet slider because my drawers don't bang around on rough roads. I got the idea from another off road guru.
