  • By popular request, the remaining Muzak Airline tapes 2, 3 and 4.
These tapes are 1 full hour each side (Tape 1 was 45 minutes per side).
Muzak Tape 2 Southern Airlines Both Sides. Muzak tape played on Southern Airlines (SPS)
7 inch reels fit conveniently on a plane, recorded 2 track mono at 3 3/4 IPS.
Classic music tunes with some selections relating to travel and places.
Muzak custom recorded, Sound Hound could not identify most selections.
    About 30 minutes a side. 1960s SPS5460 32 Southern MUZAK
    Muzak Airline Tape Labeling System:
    1. UAL-413B or SPS5460 Unique Program Number
    2. 32, 28, 57, 132 or 136 Copy Number of the Program
    3. UAL, Delta or Southern Airline ID (UAL for United)
The same unique Program Number could be on many Planes in the fleet.
The Airline could have rotated different Programs on the same route so that frequent flyers won't have to listen to the same program too frequently.
It is not clear how often or who (airline or Muzak) would rotate the tapes, if at all.

The hotel I worked at got it off the phone line, the fidelity wasn't so great, almost NO hi end. But at places downtown, within the same exchange, you could hear cymbals. I got it for years off an SCA receiver. The host station overmodulated the main carrier, and it was full of crosstalk, but I had MUZAK at home. My Mom often would sing to the old songs. Thanks again for posting this gem!!

That’s really too bad. Sometimes, I think corporations don’t know what the people really want. I remember as a radio DJ, every station I worked at would soon or later bring in “consultants”. They would inevitably change the format and ruin the stations. The terrible changes were reflected in the plummeting ratings in the Arbitron book.
I’d love to bring back a “beautiful music” format station and broadcast this stuff. AM or FM, I don’t care. I’d bet people would be surprised at how many businesses would tune in the house system to it. People would tune in and listen, I’m sure of it.

After seeing so many Muzak tapes uploaded to YT and all the positive comments accompanying those posts, I have just one thing to say... Why are there no more "Easy Listening" stations around anymore?...NOW, before you answer that, know this: I've checked ALL the subcarrier feeds on every FM station in the Tampa Bay area and there are no EL streams, not one. I can, on occasion, pickup WAVV-FM out of Naples, FL, about 120 miles away, which happens to be one of the few EL stations left in the country. But then some crummy low power FM in Tampa was authorized to use the same freq as WAVV, stupid FCC!

Similar thing happened here in Fort Worth. KNCT Killeen, TX could be picked up in Fort Worth until a religious station in Denton wiped it out. Luckily, listening to KNCT I became aware of their stream which is still up. I list easy streams on my Internet Jukebox website sites.google.com/site/inetjukebox/
Unfortunately Jones College Radio from Jacksonville, FL recently terminated their stream. KNCT, KLUX and KHOY still broadcast as well as stream. WAVV used to stream.

@@CV2200A Thanks for your comment. I always looked forward to listening to Jones College radio while on my way to visit my folks in SC. While working for the U of Wis, River Falls, we always had KNXR-FM, from Rochester, MN on for background music in our TV engineering shop. The station has since been sold, I don't know what they broadcast now. Sure do miss the big "easy" stations in the Twin Cities from the 70's: KEEY, WLOL, KTWN, WAYL, and KSTP (KS95). In fact, I worked for KSTP-TV for some years and their FM station studios were in the same blg we were, was fun to visit them. Even podunk KABG in Cambridge, MN was fun to listen to with their scratchy and skippy records. Oh for the good ol' days when vinyl and tape ruled. While attending college in Minneapolis, I would often rifle thru KEEY's dumpster and found many great old tapes they threw away, still have them. One day their Chief Engineer caught me and invited me into the station for the nickel tour. Very nice man, I can't remember his name, but he gave me an Eimac 4-400 tetrode power tube from their AM station's Collins transmitter, still have that, too, yep, I'm a pack rat ;-)

i noticed the description said 1960s, but i think all 4 of these were actually from 1970. this one actually says 1/28/70, but the other three aren’t marked. they all have repeats from demo albums, and the same few at that, and they all come from 69/70.

That is the only reel with a red (or pink) label that says on it:
      "LEASE PERIOD
      REMOVED
      973
      1/28/70".
Therefore, I would expect that that tape was in service for more than one month (but who knows how long they stay in use). The other tapes may be older or newer. The fact it was removed at the beginning of 1970 confirms that they were in use in the late 1960s early 1970s. The fact that these were being sold at all may even mean that they were phasing the whole system out at that time. Forensic speculation.

It could be that instead of Monday the song is about Sunday, or some other day of the week, but Monday or Sunday sound better. Individuals may still place timestamps in the comments. However, I do not feel Muzak was intended to be listened to one song at a time. Therefore, I will not attempt to include timestamps in the my main comments for any of the Muzak or other music videos I have posted. Also, CZcams limits the number of characters in a video description. I think it more important to list the song titles in order, as best as we can figure them out.
