I have seen none stop comments of the Sony a7siii vs Sony ZV-E1. You have to remember that ZV-E1 is intended for Vloggers. If you intend on getting sony A7siii for more Professional Videography im here to give you confidence to get it. The fact that you can't fully rely on the ZV-E1 not overheating in situations such as wedding and events, I will always choose a more reliable camera such as the Sony A7siii. Also dont forget only one card slot for the ZV-E1 therefore if you have an issue with that card during a shoot your footage is now lost. Compared to having the footage dualy being recorded on two slots and having back up with the Sony A7siii. Obviously new tools will start slowly being better then older camera even cameras that are only 6 months old. But dont just look at quality of the video sensor but look at what you intend the camera to be used for. For me Sony A7siii is still better my for my need in Reliability of not over heating, two SD card slot and ability to use 120 and 240fps. Sony a7Siii is a Masterpiece and who knows maybe our prayers will be answered getting Firmware update soon XD.
Btw I'm not trashing on ZV-E1 it is an amazing Vlogging camera that is pushing new levels of cheaper quality camera. But I do have to stop the trend of people putting ZV-E1 above the Masterpiece Sony A7Siii

No, you’re exactly right, it’s just a really big drag that you’re going to be paying over a thousand dollars extra for a grip, viewfinder, and extra card slot - while losing features.
Hopefully it drops in price soon or they introduce another pro camera in its place that blows the zve1 out of the water.
But yeah, it’s just one of those things with technology. You can always play the waiting game and see. Or just cough up the extra $1,300 for a card slot. Def will need it if you’re doing it for a client.

@Switch Unboxing There's always going to be a better camera some time in the future.
It's called planned obsolescence. Every MBA learns about it in business school. Also, it's just the nature of evolving technology. Every 2 years computer chips get twice as fast.

As a Wedding videographer I find myself using the viewfinder a lot, especially outside. Several years ago when I started using the A7s version 1 I thought I would never use it but today I feel it's a must have. The dials are helpful if you want to film in high frame rates (ex120fps) and you want to keep the audio... Having the two card slots is also a MUST HAVE and this new camera will definitely overheat in long shootings... The ZVE1 could be a nice B camera for the A7S III or the FX3 if your not planning on filming long takes but never a real substitute. The A7S III has two and a half years but it's a reliable camera. I would not do or advise anyone to do a professional work with this ZVE1, it's a vlogging camera, not a pro camera. The only thing to ask is that Sony can give us via firmware update some of the additional features in the A7S and FX3.

YES ! Professional videographers use a viewfinder and focus in manual. Maybe first use an auto but then switch back to really make sure they are created clear in focus. The 9 million viewfinder has a real purpose.

Would you trust the ZVE1 to shoot a live concert or a stage play without it shutting down on you? (plugged to USB power) Would you let it roll for 1+ hour on a wedding and not worry about it overheating? The S-III has never once overheated on me.....even when doing back to back lectures and day long training classes. I have turned on my S-III at 7am and let it run all day, non-stop until 7pm.

This just makes me want to buy more A7SIII’s. I love that camera and I hope the S line doesn’t end. I use it for photography all the time. The EVF is a must for me, at least when I’m filming wildlife with long zoom lenses. It just seems way more effective to use the EVF to capture wildlife.

lack of EVF is a dealbreaker for me. I need it and adding a viewfinder (the ones that stick to LCD) defeats the purpose of why i would be getting this camera in the first place, it becomes effectively less compact and stealth than the a7siii. i guess they are targeting the vlogger.

I love this review and all the points that you made. I've been debating on which Sony camera to upgrade to for some time now, and I'm leaning more towards the ZV-E1, although I know everyone keeps mentioning the overheating issue. I do almost all run and gun shooting so I don't see it be too much of an issue, but I absolutely love that you can get the same picture on the ZV-E1 as the A7s III and FX3 for a much better price (+ some additional new features). I like that you mentioned how the ZV-E1 has significant less buttons, which might take some time to adjust to as I love being able to customize all my buttons, but I hope I can work around this with a plan of what I need to priority.

I see a lot of people getting sensitive over this camera. Confused why because it’s not sold as a “cinema camera”. It’s sold as a “vlogging camera”.
We shouldn’t be comparing it to any a7 camera or FX camera because there different lines completely.
Now when you compare it to the older ZV cameras it is a massive step up for their “vlogging line”.
So if you’re going to complain about the fan overheating or the fact that it doesn’t have two card slots, it means you’re shopping in the wrong camera line.

There’s a lot that you mentioned, that would be a deal breaker for me on the ZV-E1.
    1. The less weight. For someone like me, shooting handheld most of the time, more weight in my hands is great for balancing and stabilizing my shots.
    2. Only 1 SD(!!!) Slot. Sony let their users wait for a two-slot option until the A7III (I guess) just to take it away in their new one. Why would you do that, if not for the purpose of giving your flagship cameras some reason to further exist?
    3. As you mentioned… the possibility to customize some buttons to make you faster.
Anyway I wish they would pack dynamic active IBIS into an hypothetical A7SIV, just like I would wish for the possibility to load a custom LUT. But as long as they don’t put that LUT thing in there, there’s always external monitors to work around that.
The ZV-E1 might be a great camera for vlogging or social media content. But as it was mentioned before, I don’t think I would take it to a professional shooting.

Now, give me some advices 😅 I'm using A7sII for over 6 yeras now and it never let me down. I wanted SIII but now, with this camera, I really thinking about ZV too. Lots of you complain about overheating, 1SD card slot and no custom buttons. To be honest, mine A7sII has only 1 slot and I never used any custom buttons, I've just found my way and I'm use to do it this way. So for someone who is used to have only 1 slot, no custom buttons and believe that ZVE1 will not overheat, is this camera better for me? I really need 10bit and 4k 50 thats the main reason I need to update. And to be honest, If I didn't have so many E-mount lenses, probably I would go for Lumis S5 II 😅

I think between the A9iii and FX3ii will end up replacing the A7s line.
What would the next step be for an A7siv? 8k? The A1 already has it, 6k? Maybe, 4k240? I would like that. The only way to get 6k would be a 30mp sensor, and if it’s stacked then we can get butter smooth read out speeds without rolling shutter. I think the A7s and A9 lines are getting closer and closer and if they include the video features in the A9iii to utilize the stacked sensor, then we might get the best hybrid camera this year.

I think the biggest thing to consider between the two cameras here is your use case scenario. Are you operating a videography business or are you a vlogger/youtuber? The a7SIII is marginally less expensive than the FX3 and yields an identical final product making it still the best option budget wise for a fully optioned camera in a business setting. Before all the Karens attack, remember what you have over the ZV-E1; dual memory card slots, all intra, full size HDMI (yes that's important), external Raw capabilities, more programmable function buttons, and better ergos. While if you are simply trying to vlog and make CZcams and other digital content then the ZV-E1 would be an excellent option for you. The crop and cinema features while digital can help you set your content apart from others without having to actually learn how to do that in the editing where such "effects" normally are added. I have zero doubts that Sony will have an a7SIV in the somewhat near future and to say otherwise... hahaha well you know better than that Peter!

  • @switchunboxing

Idk man I think this would be moreso raising the bar of the midrange, rather than replacing the a7s lineup. This just doesn’t replace the pro features of all the shortcut buttons and the viewfinder. Maybe something even better is coming down the pipeline 👀
Really I think this camera is in a weird space. Because lacking the dual card slot along with those other professional features, this almost puts this camera in the entry level or beginner category. Even though it has a nice camera and a not-so-entry level price. Esp carrying the ZV name.
To me this actually seems like a weird category. Almost makes you think that the next professional can will be coming in higher that the a7iv.

I want you to know that I hear you. I can't and don't speak for the product engineers that work to develop the firmware updates that you are asking about, but sometimes (like with all consumer electronics), hardware requirements to support certain features. Traditionally, we always try to keep our products up to date for our customers and that is the core of building a long term relationship with our customers. As I said, I am not sure what the product engineers may or may not be working on, but with the most recent update to the cameras you mentioned occurring 09/22, I am sure there is process the happens that prevents an overnight firmware update development (assuming that is being worked on).
What I would like to know is what are some of the features that you would like to see come to A7S III, A1 etc.
Thanks for taking time to reach out.

@@Intuifilm it’s a half answer. Because they didn’t develop this new camera overnight. So for as long as they took to develop the new camera and feature sets, 1-2 years, they could’ve been planning a contemporary update release for the rest of the platform. The fact they don’t, is just a signal of what they are dedicating and what they are not dedicating resources to. No bad dogs in the situation, but if they make business decisions that make customers upset.
