What is amazing about Kelly and has always been her magic is she doesn’t try to sound like the original and adds her Kelly spin on it with her voice. Amazing, a true homage… not trying to replicate but pay respect to, tastefully. Kelly, the way you articulate the pain in the bridge, ughhh. Makes me weak in the knees and for one of my favorite songs AND makes it FEEL new again. Wow. The last chorus. DAMN. Thank you for showing OUT, thank you for feeling the song in a way I always imagined.. you are magical.

Same as you I've been very sceptical and feared she might butcher a perfect song. But I was more than surprised when she gave a completely new touch to that song by going up an octave in the last third of the song. No one can capture the emotions that Hope Sandoval laid in this song. But I have to admit that Kelly Clarkson did a damn fine job with this cover version.

This has been my favorite song for the past 5 years since when I first heard it and this is my first time coming across Kelly’s cover, it brought me to tears exactly like the first time I ever heard the original song, it’s beautiful. Most times with covers you can tell the singer is just focusing on getting the song right instead of actually feeling the song and the lyrics, I loved that in this cover you can actually feel Kelly’s emotions in the way she sings

To the haters, covers are a chance to put a new perspective, a personal touch on a great song, often one that means something special to the covering artist. The original song has a haunting calm but is not simply Hope's voice and rhythm guitar, there are, tambourine, drums, slide guitar, and piano, each of which have their own haunting effect. When I listen to the original I like the piano more than anything else. If Kelly covered it with the calm of Hope's voice and only the rhythm guitar this would have been boring, and not Kelly's style.
Kelly Clarkson and Hope Sandoval have different personalities (to put it mildly ). Of course they're going to interpret the song differently. I like both.
I think Kelly Clarkson is a rather talented musician with a very good voice. This is a very good cover, but it's, obviously, not the original. I don't think it's accurate to even call the original an "interpretation" - it's the original. It's Mazzy Star's song. And it's stellar. But Clarkson has good taste in appreciating it, and she sings it very nicely here, giving it the respect it deserves. It's challenging to cover a song this good.
