I was at Wattisham for 5 years where there was a Target Facilitates Flight. The late Russ Pengelly was both Flight Commander and Solo Display Pilot. We saw him many times rehearsing his display which always finished with a near supersonic pass along the runway dollars by a rocket-like steep climb and landing soon afte r. Sadly , Russ died as a squadron leader in a Tornado in 1979
Terrific footage.Fantastic filming of my all time favourite.THE LIGHTNING.Did my Summer Camp at Wyton in circa 1977/8 when Canberras and Nimrods were based there and never forget the Phantoms, British and US Airforce coming into land over our Barracks at night.The US engines were throttling backwards and forwards while the Brits did a smoother approach.
Reminds me of this beautiful aircraft when I was at Guttersloh. Probably the best jet that has ever been developed in Britain. Still more than capable in today's aircraft technology, shame she no longer serves her country.
Great Video ! Reminds me of the early International Air Tattoo's (IAT's) at Greenham Common. In 1973, the first one held there, I went on both days. The Lightning took off, stood on its tail in line with the crowd, not away from it and went straight up. It also flew over the crowd at ultra-low level, right over my head, fortunately in level flight. If it wasn't in reheat it definitely felt like it as we were toasted and I could just about count every rivet through the shimmering shock wave !! It was both awesome and frightening in equal measure. On the next day, Sunday, and at all the other displays I ever went to, it did what you see in the video here. Elf and safety had kicked in, perhaps wisely. Probably due to this and at later shows, including the Harrier display directly in front of me, plus the Canadian Starfighter formation coming from behind at low level, I'm deaf in one ear. i wouldn't have missed it for the world however ! In another Greenham IAT we attended, we went by bus, as the traffic arrangements were appalling. The Arrow's, on seeing about 50 of us in the queue to go home, 'bombed' us and turned the smoke on !! Oh for video cameras to have been available then ...

I saw a Lightning at Hucknall about 50 years ago. I can still see it in my mind climbing vertically. Incredible sight and sound.
Even in its twilight years still the most exciting thing at any airshow......
Love the Lightning, seeing them flying around Suffolk in the late 60's early 70's out of Wattisham , well before moving to Australia.

I spent 2 years in Tabuk, KSA and the Mk6 Lighnings were based there, every day we were treated to an air show by theses magnificent aircraft.

That vertical climb, though.... no other aircraft pierces the sky quite like the English Electric Lightning....
