The Algarve region in southern Portugal is a beautiful destination for travelers seeking sun, sea, and culture. To make the most of your visit, it's best to plan your trip ahead of time. Here are some tips for how to travel the Algarve.
    Best towns to visit:
Lagos - a historic town with beautiful beaches, stunning cliffs, and a vibrant nightlife. Be sure to visit the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira and the Mercado dos Escravos.
Tavira - a charming town with picturesque streets, historic churches, and a Roman bridge. Don't miss the Tavira Castle and the Praia do Barril.
Faro - the capital of the Algarve, with a historic old town, a beautiful cathedral, and the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Be sure to try the traditional Cataplana stew in one of the local restaurants.
Portimão - a vibrant coastal town located in the western Algarve region of Portugal. This town is known for its lively atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and rich history. One of the main attractions is the stunning Praia da Rocha, a long and wide beach with golden sand and crystal-clear water. Portimão is also famous for its fresh seafood, which can be enjoyed at one of the many restaurants in the area.
    Best beaches:
Praia do Cordoama - a stunning beach located on the western coast of the Algarve region in Portugal. This secluded and unspoiled beach is surrounded by towering cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. It's a popular spot for surfers, due to the consistent waves and strong currents.
Praia da Falésia - a picturesque and popular beach located in the Albufeira area of the Algarve region in Portugal. This beautiful sandy beach stretches for several kilometers and is framed by impressive red cliffs that contrast with the turquoise blue of the sea.
Praia da Marinha - a breathtakingly beautiful beach located in the Algarve region of Portugal. It is known for its crystal-clear waters, towering cliffs, and unique rock formations. The beach is located in a secluded cove, surrounded by rugged cliffs, making it a popular spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and exploring the marine life. The beach is accessed by a staircase leading down from the cliffs, providing spectacular views of the coastline. Praia da Marinha has been recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and is a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike. Whether you're looking to swim, sunbathe, or explore the natural beauty of the Algarve, Praia da Marinha is a must-visit destination that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Praia da Rocha - one of the most popular beaches in the Algarve, with crystal clear waters and golden sands. There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, and the beach is great for water sports.
Praia do Vau - a beautiful and secluded beach, surrounded by cliffs and with crystal clear waters. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the sun.
Praia do Camilo - a small and picturesque beach with stunning rock formations and turquoise waters. It's a great place for snorkeling and diving.
    Best dishes to eat:
Arroz de Marisco - a classic Portuguese dish that translates to "seafood rice." It is a hearty and flavorful dish that typically includes a variety of shellfish, such as clams, mussels, and prawns, as well as rice, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and herbs. The seafood is cooked in a fragrant broth with vegetables and spices, and then the rice is added to the mixture, absorbing all the delicious flavors.
Cataplana - a traditional seafood stew made with fish, shellfish, and vegetables, cooked in a copper pot with a hinged lid.
Frango Piri-Piri - a spicy grilled chicken dish, marinated in garlic, lemon juice, and hot pepper sauce.
Acorda Algarvia - a traditional Portuguese soup from the Algarve region, made with bread, garlic, olive oil, coriander, and poached eggs. It is a simple and comforting dish that is perfect for a cold winter evening or a light lunch. The bread is soaked in a flavorful broth made from garlic and olive oil, and then the poached eggs are added on top, along with freshly chopped coriander. The result is a delicious and satisfying dish that is both filling and nutritious. Acorda Algarvia is a must-try for anyone visiting the Algarve region of Portugal and looking to experience the local cuisine.
In conclusion, the Algarve is a beautiful destination with plenty of things to see and do. Whether you're looking to relax on the beach, explore historic towns, or indulge in traditional cuisine, there's something for everyone in this region of Portugal.

We were *just* in the Algarve and it was wonderful! Here are some tips for those aspiring to travel to the Algarve in winter / off season, more specifically mid January - mid February:
    1) The weather may say ~55 F / 12 C, but the sun is HOT. Weather Channel said 13 C while our frontline terrace in Quateira boasted 32 C. Photo proof available for the non believers :p
    2) Many smaller restaurants are closed during off season, despite what Google Maps says is open! So it kind of looks like a ghost town even in some of the large cities like Albufeira.
    3) Speaking of Albufeira - it’s probably the ugliest city in the Algarve. If you like Benidorm, you’ll love Albufeira.
    4) Lagos was our favorite city in the Algarve overall: beautiful hikes, stunning scenery and beaches, many restaurants were open, well-kept buildings + newer modern accommodations, tons of shopping options, and there’s even a secret naked beach ;)
    5) The cutest, quaintest town we found was Luz, just a short drive from Lagos. All cute villas, a picturesque beach and promenade, and 2 euro pints of beer oceanfront were all amazing - but parking is nearly impossible to find.
    6) Tavira is super cute but small, with the huge advantage of being close to Spain.
    7) Looking for beach bar vibes with toes-in-the-sand and fruity drinks in hand? Head to Monte Gordo, with a long boardwalk and multiple modern restaurants and chill beach bars all along the oceanside.
    8) As mentioned in the video, a car is a must, but be aware of painfully slow drivers year round. The drive from Lisboa is only 4 hours to Albufeira, so super easy to get to!
    9) Make sure your Airbnb has heating. It can get cold in the evenings, and many rentals we found did not have any heating available, which would have made a miserable time for us who think anything lower than 55 F is too cold.
    Because it is.
    10) And finally, for us Americans: the BEST burger we had in all of Portugal - and arguably the world! - is at Hamburgueria da Baixa. You absolutely must get the Arranha Ceus, a monster of a burger that is 3 levels of gluttony. Amazingly delicious with homemade fries and a garlic mayo sauce that adds to the terrible health choices :D

I think you are overselling Algarve. With so many wonderful European destinations, Algarve left me disappointed. Too expensive for what you are getting. After the extensive travel in Italy, Greece and Spain, Algarve left a lot more desired. We followed many of your recommendations but it requires a lot of driving, most mentioned towns have a few pretty streets but not much to be admired. Any Andalusian town has so much more to offer. Most food choices in Algarve are overpriced and one has to look really hard to find quality. Your food recommendations were great but once again involved driving. The coast is breathtaking but once again involves more driving and looking for parking. The ocean is too cold to really enjoy the water. Overcrowded, too much tourism, modern real estate, no charm, not much cultural heritage. It’s convenient if you have EasyJet flying to Algarve but Italy or any other Mediterranean country has so much more to offer.

Algarve sucks. So over rated. Water is absolutely frigid. And it’s not that nice in person. Tourist trap for real. Pictures and videos are much nicer than actually seeing it with your own eyes.
