HOW I TIE MY DASTAAR/ TURBAN ~KAURMOMENTS~

  • Hi guys, thanks for watching my dastaar tutorial. For the cloth, I use 2.5 meter full voile for bungha and 4.5 meter full voile for my actual Dastaar. My dastaar usually varies from 5-7 larhs, depending on the length of the cloth. I usually tie my dastaar over my ears, but you can use same steps to do it above ears as well. Please leave me a comment below or message me on my ig page @kaurmoments for any questions.

The turban is a symbol of royalty a crown that epitomizes the sacrifices our Gurus made for our existence. The utmost care and respect must be administered when tying the turban. As we do not let the turban touch the floor, please do not place it in the mouth as well while tying.

The problem is it makes it exceedingly hard for anyone other than indians to want to join your religion for that exact reason.
Everything else I read about all the previous nine gurus kind of illustrate how the Sikh religion is about unity, acceptance, humility and multiple belief systems coming together. Then when Guru Gobind Singh came along he made it so you have to change your last name to one of two indian ones and wear what was effectively a royal garb in india.
That to me seems to be more about pride and exclusivity than anything else which in a way is the opposite of what the previous 9 gurus were attempting to achieve. I can't help but think Guru Gobind Singh did a disservice to your religion in its entirety. That's just my perspective though as an outsider looking in. If you think/feel I'm wrong please tell me why/how. Cheers!

    • @pavanSingh-ts5ym
      @pavanSingh-ts5ym Před 4 lety +4

The Raven: Sikhism is not a religion, but a spiritual/mystical way of life in accordance with nature that guides humanity in acceptance of God's will. As for joining all are free and most welcome to abide by the teachings set forth by the Gurus. The only requirement is upto the disciple to fully submit their soul and fully trust and believe Gurus word (Shabad). As with other faiths, one is expected to fully comply with traditions and strict rules, questioning is possible, but you will be stuck in a time warp of duality that will only lead to frustration and resentment. As you stated the nine Gurus before Sri Guru Gobind Singh promoted unity, acceptance, humility and multiple belief systems, however Sri Guru Gobind Singh is still part of the Guruship, as one light merged from Guru Nanak to Gobind Singh. ICK JOT, the message throughout our history is the same, no deviance, but rather a shift in environmental, geographic, influence that Sri Guru Gobind Singh had to adapt to. During his time Aurangzeb was the Mughal leader, who was a tyrant and oppressed the masses, his policy was to convert the whole of India to Islam, preferably by the use of force, not by choice. He declared his sovereignty by imposing high Taxes, no religious freedom and complete submission to his authority. He also, declared that no one other was allowed to wear a turban, maintain an army and consider themselves royalty. He alienated the general public by his corrupt views. Sri Guru Gobind Singh had no other option/choice but to defend himself and the rest of India. He fought numerous battles against the Mughal forces, while maintaining the Sikh principles, in fact the tip of his arrows were gold plated, so in battle the enemies family could afford a proper burial according to their faith for the fallen warriors. You claim a disservice, research and read the life of Sri Guru Gobind Singh and you will see the truth, Their are too many stories to list, but Khalsa is forever pure, and always ready to defend the innocent and poor against oppression, tyranny and injustice. Our Gurus sacrificed their lives for humanity, instituted a new paradigm in spirituality opening and welcoming anybody, regardless of caste, creed, color or status. Look at Golden Temple, one of the holiest shrines in Sikhism, there are 4 doors around the temple, EAST, WEST, NORTH, and South, every direction is open to enter, but there is only one path to GOD.

@Pavan Singh & Parminder Kaur. Firstly Sat-Sri-Akal and Best Wishes for the New Year. 🙏 My name is Harpreet (male) I am born and live in the UK. I am not a Gurusikh but I wear a Kenyan style Turban with the point at the front. My family are religious but do drink and eat meat (some may say as i've heard in the past, you are either a Sikh or not which I didn't agree with. We all try our best as we have differing lifestyles where one needs to adapt and deal with other members of society Religions, Faiths, Cultures, Colour, jobs etc..
Your comment about the Turban material not touching the floor and not putting the cloth in the mouth concerned me abit. I used to wear my Kenyan style Turban taught to me by my late father. I now wear a plain black Pattka (like Monty Panesar - The Cricketer) because I now have a serious medical condition called Cervical Spondylosis that starts from my neck and spreads to the shoulders, lower back, arms, legs and hands and affects the nerves in my hands and arms too. I now have 2 artificial discs in my neck for 13 years and because of the extreme pain and tension, stiffness I am unable to tie my usual Turban because it's too hard to manage and so have to wear a Pattka instead as it's much easier for me. Others are unwilling to help me tie my proper usual Turban.
Now the 2 points you make above, I personally feel that even though you are right in saying that, I still think these are 2 very PETTY issues. My late father and me put the cloth in the mouth in order to tie the Turban tightly so it doesn't fall off and because the material is so long sometimes it's difficult to avoid touching the Turban on the floor. It's not intentional or deliberate at all.
I think, instead of being overly critical you should be proud that in this day and age where religion is on the decline and people don't believe in it as much that you should respect and be proud that the girl in the above video and other similar videos; is tying a Turban/Dastaar/Dumulla etc.. Actually I know many men and boys that stopped wearing it. So you should give the girl in the video DOUBLE RESPECT. Being over critical about somebody drives them away from religion such as your comment and effectively you are shooting yourself in the foot, keeping it plain and simple. Then religious people moan or complain that boys and girls don't follow the religion......Perhaps you shouldn't be over critical.
      Many Thanks
      Harpreet.
      🙏
PS: What about Singers in the Bhangra/Folk industry who sometimes wear a Turban and not? Can you criticise them also? It seems like they choose when to wear it or not. Why can't they wear the Turban all the time as I think they look much smarter with it on. 🙏
PPS: I don't wish to enter into a deep religious debate with you at all but just merely want to make my point in response to your comment. 🙏

_You are naive and stated you wear a Kenyan style turban I know all too well about the Sikhs from Kenya Nairobi who blatantly consider themselves superior to other Sikhs especially from India so you are guilty as to your claim_

_Understand the history of the Turban and the sacrifices made so we can proudly wear our Turbans in today's society learning to show some respect has absolutely nothing to do with my personal opinion rather a reflection of how we must maintain our integrity and identification have you ever seen a Muslim disrespect our place their Quran on the floor better yet touch it without washing their hands we need to stop with this matter of convenience attitude_
Now the 2 points you make above, I personally feel that even though you are right in saying that, I still think these are 2 very PETTY issues. It's not intentional or deliberate at all.
_Where do we draw the lines in terms of PETTY issues shall we just do whatever we fell shall we change the practices set forth by our Gurus shall we decide that doing prayer is not right shall we decide that some parts of GGS are right and some wrong you need to evaluate your stance_
I think, instead of being overly critical you should be proud that in this day and age where religion is on the decline and people don't believe in it as much that you should respect and be proud that the girl in the above video and other similar videos; is tying a Turban/Dastaar/Dumulla etc.. _Not over critical but showing reverence and respect if your going to make a video tying your Turban be ready for praise and criticism whether you agree or not if you truly are a Sikh then you will learn and make wiser choices in the future_

To me, Religion is not about what you eat or drink or what you wear or show on top or broadcast but keeping your beliefs in your heart and being honest and integrating with people from various backgrounds and cultures being happy receiving joy and being respected by other cultures, that is most rewarding to me. Above all, to me, Humanity is the biggest religion.
I have met decent people who don't believe in religion and they ask the question, how can you believe, trust or put your faith in something which you didn't see or witness yourself and where not there at that time? The same question to priests and all religious people who also were not there when events being spoken about happened long before their time? Please note, this is not my personal view but what people I have met in my life tell me. I don't mean to cause any offence to anyone.
