Manitowoc 4600 Dredging Sand and Gravel in Illinois

  • Fully rebuilt Manitowoc 4600. We bought it last year, already rebuilt. It had Tier 3 computer controlled Cat engines installed during the rebuild. It has a C-15 for drag/hoist, and a C-9 for swing and travel. The man that built it spared no expense in the rebuild. Everything was brought to new spec, except of course the engines, they were brand new from Caterpillar. According to the man that built it, it was quite a challenge setting it up with these engines, since it had never been done before! I have to give serious props to him, because the fit and finish is awesome, and it looks like a factory setup. It retains the VICON torque converter and air throttle setup. It burns 12 gallon of fuel per hour, which is about 1/5 of what I've been told the old single engine 379 Cat powered 4600's burn. It burns less than 1/2 of the fuel of the most efficient engines that were installed in 4600's, old twin Detroits or Cummins. You have to remember that when these were built in the 70's, most people didn't worry about the price of fuel because it was so cheap. It has 140' of boom, and swings a 6.5 cubic yard bucket. It will handle a 8 yard bucket with a 120' boom. It weighs 430,000 pounds. When you sit in the seat, the operators eye level is 13 feet off the ground.
    We bought it to mine sand and gravel in IL. It works great in our application. The only problem is finding someone that can operate it. It takes some time in the seat to get productive with one. Once you start to get the hang of it, there is nothing that compares. Being able to reach so far out there (120+ feet) and to be able to dig so deep (60+ feet), and throwing 450-500 tons per hour, show me an excavator that can do that!
    No one makes a machine that is this size anymore that can handle the duty cycle work of a dragline. If they did, it would be cost prohibitive for a small operation like ours anyway. A new machine like this would have to cost 4 mil or more.

    NICE! Operators are a rare commodity these days. All us old guys are about too old to cut it, even though I sure want to sometimes. 9/10 ths of the ones I ran were straight mechanical and a lot smaller BUT a dragline is a dragline pretty much. It'd tae a bit to get the interlock with power in and out but not impossible. Thanks again and I'd be proud too! GBWYall!

    Man that was a great video I love watching them old cranes work just like you said they don’t make them like that no more they’re all hydraulic now which pretty much any operator can run them but anyway my friend I’d like to see the inside of the cab and the operator view as he’s running it so keep the videos coming brother

    Very nice rebuild of a classic machine, I ran drag line for a time both mechanical and air shift, takes a little time to learn casting and drag. I have seen the demise of many drag lines from long stick excavators. But you cant beat the reach, dept and productivity of a good drag line. many people are finding that out but a lot of the old operators are retiring and there has not been a training replacement program.     I think you got your fuel numbers wrong I have ran several 4600,s with 379 engines and working them hard would burn 20 gallons per hour.With the two engines they burn less.The old 4500,s with theV12 397 engine burn even less because they don,t have the turbo on them.I do love your machine the 4600 is my favorite machine.

      A 2400 with the 379 uses more or less one quart of fuel / cycle@ 1 minute cycle times. 150 gallon per 10 hour shift.

    Nice machine... could shave 15 seconds minimum of your cycle time with a few adjustments tho. Easy diggin

    What's the pay scale out that way for running friction crane? We make around 60.00 on straight time in the pacific north west.

    Maybe you should put someone that knows how to run it you would get some thing done . Its painful to watch slow slow slow
