That grinding is you putting it in park.... the drive shaft broke and so even though you put your foot on the brake the output shaft was still able to spin.
Early K1500 GMC Yukon with a '94+ Chevy Grille? The 4L60-E is and its parking pawl are probably fine but I'd be looking at the transfercase adapter and tailshaft housing. For anybody who might drop a propeller shaft, shift to neutral and kill the ignition. Once everything stops spinning it's safe to then shift into park.
