- At Buchla And Friends, Sonic State had the opportunity to interview Ron from Sleepy Circuits, the makers of the Hypno generative video module. Ron showed us their latest device called Mezzz, a video synthesis system that combines a controller and app combo. Mezzz is a tiny Bluetooth MIDI controller that can also work with USB, allowing users to control over 2,000 parameters. With a gyroscope feature, users can manipulate visuals by simply rotating the controller, making it ideal for audio-reactive performances. Ron demonstrated how he could create complex visuals using mathematical functions and feedback effects, resulting in some mesmerizing patterns. The Mezzz controller is available now for $360 on the Sleepy Circuit's website and is compatible with iPhones, iPads, and desktop Macs.

Incredible product and presentation. Bravo and thank you for making something so awesome 🙏
That's amazing. I hope Sleepy Circuits comes to Knobcon '24, so we can see this in action with the performances!
He had it at Knobcon in ‘23. Pretty cool device.
SDF even invading my music hobby now too. The future really is now huh. That's pretty dope though! Device looks great and seems to have a really fun UX. The clip on with the gyro is a nifty alternative to straight up raecting to an audio feed.
Now this is nice!😮
This is awesome
wow nice !!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely need this
Definitely interested in this.
Can one of the shapes be a video like on the Hypno?
Not yet but this is definitely coming, likewise for 3D model loading which should be pretty sweet
Can this video synthesiser be audio reactive?
Want 🤤
need
Why no audio with the visuals? He's at a Synth convention right? 😐
?
I think this show was "headphones only" because of the small space
It's a video synthesizer
Every new instrument for VJ's is a Great Occasion!
this dude needs to regulate his breathing XD
People have health issues, but hey - going for a hacky joke was just something you couldn't resist I guess
I like Sleepy Circuits but this is very overpriced for what really is (a MIDI controller with a nice shape). This should cost 1/3 of what they're actually asking.
So the cost of a novation launchpad? That's not really possible... consider that Mezzz unlocks full use of vidOS and together this is a HD 3D video synthesis system with a lower upfront cost and easier setup than any other video synth offering, not to mention the additional use cases in music. The hardware is also wireless, has 2000mah battery, gesture control and a unique haptic knob interface. -Ron
@@SleepyCircuits I'm not hating on the product or the concept, on the contrary I think we need more video synths and video synth ecosystems. I absolutely love my Hypno. I was commenting on how the I+D value/costs might've been distributed differently on this product. I'm sensing a lot of the unit price is to compensate for the effort required to come up with your vidOS (which was "an unsolved problem") rather than pack the control features Mezz offers (BLE, haptic feedback, gyro/accel/encoder reading and MIDI CC implementation, all of which are "solved problems") into a single device.
I don't pretend to say how you must run your business and I'll still consume and support your products (keep up the good work!), but I'd rather buy a ~$180 controller with an IAP-limited video engine software (which I can 'progressively' afford or switch if it doesn't fit my needs exactly) than just a $360 controller.
@@milleniuminc Yes ur right its a new sort of experimental business model, a big part of the value is in fact the integration. I do hope you try the Mezzz haptics one day because that is actually a unique feature. This model also keeps vidOS free to use with other controllers so more people can try it and I do hope you check it out.
@@milleniuminc For sure the business model is a bit experimental like everything I do :P Not sure if you realized but vidOS is free to use with 3rd party controllers so my hope is you try it with one you already have for the price of $0 and upgrade to Mezzz eventually to support us + get all the hardware enabled features. In app purchases for vidOS will come along much later down the line for advanced functionality. Anyway designing all those capabilities into a small haptic wearable was actually QUITE the engineering challenge. The price actually reflects the costs to make the hardware alone for our small co. and is inline with other similar capability controllers such as fighter twister or UC4 that don't require expensive pre-certified RF components or batteries.
You don't seem to understand how a business stays afloat.
