Jimmy Webb - one of America's greatest songwriters. Make sure to note this is about a soldier in Vietnam. The song is actually unfinished. They had to record it on the fly with no time to finish so the album could be done on time. Gentle on my Mind is the one song from Glen Campbell which is required listening.
"Galveston" is a song about an American soldier fighting in the Vietnam War and longing to return home to Texas and Galveston. It's based on a true story by the songwriter. Thanks, Shawan, for the excellent commentary on the song and your family vacation.
Glen is a tremendous talent. Funny that some of his biggest songs do not showcase his incredible guitar playing. One of the finest guitar players of his time
If you want to be blown away, watch the live version of this with Steve Warriner. Makes you wonder at how anyone could play like that! Glen Campbell was, inarguably, one of the best guitar players *ever* 🎸
@@rayj1011 Indeed he was! The solo in that version I mentioned is insane. I've seen several really very excellent guitarists, including professionals claim that to be not just difficult, but nearly impossible to play. And yet, he is noticeably missing from RS top 250 guitarists. Roy Clark too. 😑
I was a little boy when this came out. I remember this song because every time I hear it, I'm back in my Mom's car as she drives us home from some where and it's playing on the radio. Just a summer afternoon riding in the car with my Mom and the radio on. Nothing special, but isn't it funny the memories that are triggered by a song?
Great song! Glen Campbell was one of the most talented entertainers & guitarists in the world. He had a lot of hits such as "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife", "Try A Little Kindness", "Southern Nights" etc. Sadly he got Alzheimer's later in life. The last song he recorded was "I'm Not Gonna Miss You".
Thank you for reacting to "Galveston". 💙Have you heard, "Where's the Playground, Susie", "Gentle on My Mind", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", or "Witchita Lineman"? All Glen Campbell. 💙💙
This song was released five days after I was born in 1969. My Dad had a few Glen Campbell 33LP -I've known this song all my life. I didn't catch the reference to military service in war, until my older brother explained it, when we were adolescents. My brother was born when our Dad served in the Air Force in the mid-60's. at a SAC base. Glen Campbell also toured with The Beach Boys, in like 1965 when Brian Wilson had a break-down. Since the BB's recorded with The Wrecking Crew, Glen as asked to step in on guitar and vocals.
Shawn please watch the Wrecking Crew biography film….they were amazing bunch of musicians that we will never see the like of again…..Jimmy Webb is an amazing songwriter and is very interesting to listen to in interviews.
My personnel favourite cover of this song was done by a band called Sparklehorse. Their lead singer/songwriter was Mark Linkus and although he wrote some brilliant and beautiful songs the band never quite caught on with the mainstream. Sadly, Linkus suffered from severe depression and took his own life in 2010 at the age of 48. I never would have heard of him had it not been for an obituary in the New York Times. The description of his music made me curious and sure enough I found a treasure trove of great music. At any rate, I find Sparklehorse's version of "Galveston' almost haunting and well worth a listen.
In the version on CZcams with Jimmy Webb called "In Session", Jimmy provides some insight about his original intent for the song and the pace he hoped it would be sung. In the version that follows, Glen sings the song the way Jimmy intended, and it totally transforms into a more thoughtful, melancholy message with a greater sense of gravitas. Its amazing how the much the song changes just by changing the pace!
Glen was one of the Wrecking Crew muscians. This is a great example of the Wrecking Crew. I believe Capitol Records producer Al DeLory produced this RIAA gold single.
Boy, this song brings me back. I was just on the beach on South Padre Island, staring at the ocean, watching the pelicans dive for fish. And thinking about fate, I could have been drafted.
YOU GOTTA SEE HIM DO IT ON A VIDEO CLIP SHAWN FOR SURE!😊SOME GLEN VIDEOS FOR SURE? WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE, GENTLE ON MY MIND, BACK HOME IN INDIANA, GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY W ( ROY CLARK ) 💯 BUT REGULAR TRACKS, GEEEZZZ SHAWN: BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX, TRY A LITTLE KINDNESS, DREAMS OF THE EVERYDAY HOUSEWIFE, 👍ANYWAY THERE YA GO, THAT GETS YOU STARTED ON SOME TOP OF THE CROP SHAWN, R.I.P ☹ GLEN

Agree 100% on Gentle on My Mind. By the late great John Hartford.
I think this song is in regard to him fighting in Vietnam and dreaming of his sweetheart in Galveston.... One of his most popular songs.
Witchita Lineman, Rhinestone Cowboy, By the Time I Get to Phoenix...

I love a good story song like this, especially when you can relate 🫡
I know I am old as dirt, but The Glen Campbell Show and Andy Williams Show were two of my favourites back in the day, and launched so many careers
Mine too !!
Along with the Johnny Cash show
Mine, too. I was a big fan of variety shows including Smothers Brothers and Sonny and Cher.
@@debrahirshfield6997 And of course, the biggest show of them all back then was The Ed Sullivan Show
Yep, we watched all of the variety shows back in the day. Great entertainment.
I still get homesick for Galveston when I hear this song, even though I've never even been to America! Saw Glen live in 1973-ish. He was phenomenal.
Glen is a tremendous talent. Funny that some of his biggest songs do not showcase his incredible guitar playing. One of the finest guitar players of his time
There is a live version of this with Steve Wariner that does feature Glen doing an incredible solo
This is the version on the radio I grew up in… BUT… the version years later with Jimmy Webb “In Session” is phenomenal… 👏👏👍🏻
So, is the live version with Steve Warriner!

He was part of the LA Wrecking Crew as a session guitarist on hundreds, or thousands, of songs.

I was born and raised in Galveston (still live 20 miles north of there) so this song holds a special place in my heart.

You can add "Where's the Playground Susie" to that list...

I remember Where's The Playground Susie . I have forgotten about that song .
I loved Where's the Playground Susie growing up. My mom used to play her Glen Campbell album all the time. I'm glad you remember it now. 😊
Love Glen Campbell,RIPSir.
When the song came out, the soldier was in Viet Nam longing to get home & afraid of dying... so sad the many who didn't make it.
He has a good song "Try A Little Kindness"
Galveston is a quaint little town with lots of cool old houses and buildings downtown

I had forgotten. Such a fine voice he had. Glen, you will be missed always.

Glen Campbell’s songs were loved back in those days & very respected as well.👍👏👏👏🩵
came out during the vietnam crisis
Crisis? WAR!
Another Jimmy Webb classic.

Such a great talent!
So good , Shawn .
Timeless brilliance never gets old .
He has lots of his own songs but he also did some great covers one of them was Time in a Bottle
❤❤Souther Nights is one of my favorites by Glen❤❤
This one and Gentle On Mind are my favorites.
You also can't miss Glen's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix," which Frank Sinatra once called his favorite song.
Boy, this song brings me back. I was just on the beach on South Padre Island, staring at the ocean, watching the pelicans dive for fish. And thinking about fate, I could have been drafted.
Glen was a tremendous guitar talent, absolutely brilliant.
Well missed xxx RIP
I am looking at a picture on the wall of me and my wife at the beach as you were saying that she died two years ago
"I am so afraid of dying..." a lot of young men could relate in the late 60s. Such a gorgeous song, courtesy of Jimmy Webb.

Reminds ma of my viet nam days
Nice reaction, the best war protest song ever. imo
💜💜💜💜💜 Loved this!
Gentle On My Mind, please!!
Great.
Fire
🥰🥰🥰
Technically, this is a war song.
I think it's about a young man going to fight in the American civil war.
Glenn Campbell is one of those few performers that are better live than studio check out his live performances
Glen Campbell..Wrecking Crew member, mellow voice and astounding guitar player. R.I.P..
