  • AWKWARD SPACES - L-Shaped Rooms (Space Planning Tips!)
    Welcome back to the Awkward Space Series. We are continuing the series with L-shaped rooms- mostly for open concept plans where one space melds right into the next. Most of the comments I received are primarily to address the layout and furniture plan. In this video I will be focusing on finding creative solutions for the following L-shaped spaces below.
    Do you have any awkward spaces you would like for me to address in this series? Comment below!

    Julie, I love your channel and have learned from your helpful tips. The only thing I’ve notice that I think is not quite the reality for most of your viewers, is that you mostly show huge, multi-million dollar homes as examples for your helpful tips. I would like to see you address decor problems and helpful tips using more modest homes and rooms, where I think the majority of your viewers can better relate. Just my two cents worth. The pictures are stunning, but don’t reflect the reality of most people.

    We’re looking into buying a condo/townhouse and I noticed how low the ceilings are in our less than $500K price point in Southern CA. The rooms are small and kitchens are small. I was wondering how to paint it so the ceiling doesn’t feel so small and trying to minimize furniture & maximize storage. Also I would like to incorporate the small balconies or tiny outside space (I really would like to do something fun like Moroccan inspired in that space) 😊 Thanks

    Hi Julie. I’m loving your videos especially the ones about awkward spaces. 😃 my house has also a lot of awkward spaces, and one is the basement. It’s not a big space, and there’s a load bearing pole smacked in the middle which makes it hard to work around. I’d really appreciate any ideas you could give to decorate the space. Thanks. God bless.🤗

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  Před 3 lety +3

      Anchoring a portion of your living space would look best against this pole. Think about creating a seating group where the pole would be used in place of an end table and back your furniture up to it

      Nothing wrong with that Estelle. Just anchor the seat against a wall and angle the orientation to face the seating group. Add a small side table for functionality 👍🏻

    Hi Julie, thank you for making this awkward solution series. It’s been so helpful for first time home buyer like me who is trying to update our first home. My husband and I diligently watch your channel everyday. I have a unique problem with my kitchen layout redesign. I have a u shaped kitchen sitting in the middle of a good size breakfast room and formal dining room and separated from living room by a load bearing wall. Both breakfast room and dining room open up to front and back patio respectively by a sliding patio door.
    I am thinking of ideas of how I could open the layout a bit without spending a ton. I believe removing load bearing wall will be too expensive and I will loose any definition as the whole area will become one open space. I am considering just knocking off the wall between kitchen and dining room and keep the living room separate. That ways it will be a u shape kitchen with 2 open peninsula on each end. However I was unable to find any pictures of such layout for inspiration. Any suggestions/advice on this will be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Julie, thank you very much for this video. I am left with a question :) In my L shaped room when sitting at the dinning table, I am looking at the back of a large couch. There is no way to turn the sofa another way because it's already facing focal points I've seen this also in this video. But looking at the back of our couch when sitting at the dinning table has become so boring and frustrating. So my question is do you have any idea how to decorate the back of a couch so that we are looking at something nice and beautiful?

    • @JulieKhuu

      A slim sofa console that doesn’t take up too much space, but beautiful when styled with minimal decor pieces 👍🏻

    My house has an entry in the middle with living and dining spaces on each side of the L--about the same size, but with the windows in the dining room. I have considered switching the two because I would get a little more TV wall space, but then the kitchen is further away. To complicate it more, on the other side is a large Great Room, with a fireplace and kitchen bar with large windows and nowhere to put a large TV. Any thoughts?

      Subtract 36”/ 90cm for aisles and walkways/ what you have leftover is the space to play with! I would create smaller groups for seating- play with scale. That’s usually the culprit to an awkward space
