  • This spring-center punch is a hand tool used to produce a dimple in a workpiece. It performs the same function as an ordinary center punch but without the need for a hammer. I have used two nos. 8mm allenky bolts and spring to make this center punch. I hope you enjoy this video.

    I actually made a spring punch before seeing this. Instead of bolts, I used a rear hub bicycle axle (very hard steel), and sharpened a point on one end.
    It's surprisingly powerful

    Much simpler design than the one I made, love it!

    I bought the same type as you have from Amazon, but returned as the tool required quite a lot of force to punch. yours looks easy , can you make and sell these to your subscribers?

    If you want an harder point use a tungsten rod... One remaining part of a tig welder.... And for improve the visibility of the punch made, increase the angle of your tool... Bigger angle of grinding make a larger punch.
    Nice idea bro. Great!

    • @iggysixx
      @iggysixx Před rokem

      That's a good tip.
      (Unfortunately I have no tig welding equipment at my disposal)
      I was thinking to improve my own with part of a small concrete drill bit. (One with a tungsten tip, obviously :))
      Since it's meant for punching concrete, I figure it might work well enough (:
      I have to say, the bicycle axle I used to make my punch - (I just sharpened a tip on one end) - holds up pretty well (even on hardened concrete / hard steel). But I do have to sharpen it every once in awhile.
      I left the back end blunt / flat. Turns out to be perfect to drive plugs into walls without damaging the paint (like you would risk when using a hammer)
      Probably gonna try and make one with chisel point one too.
      And one with a pin driver. For door hinges.
      (The original spring tools also come in different varieties)

      @@iggysixx some hard steel rod is good... You can use also an old drill bit... For example... Or an old philips screwdriver....
      Finding an old piece of a tungsten rod is not easy expecially if you don't have a tig welding machine I understand... But maybe you can have a friend have it... Or in any workshop... Ask them.

    • @iggysixx
      @iggysixx Před rokem

      @@flaviop.3938 Yeah, screwdriver crossed my mind too - chrome-vanadium steel is pretty hard.
      I also have good experienced with hex keys / allen keys. Made a metal scribe out of one (cut off the short end, sharpened it like a pencil. It just stays razor sharp, even when scratching hardened steel)
      . The problem with a hex key is the shape. (It's hard to drill a hexagonal hole (: )
      Gonna try a small concrete drill bit probably
