- HYPEBEAST Impressions is an ongoing video series that delves into the mind of today’s leading art contemporaries. For our second installment, we got an exclusive look inside New York City-based artist Adam Lucas’s studio in Chinatown.
Lucas, formerly known as the notorious street artist Hanksy, made a name for himself by reproducing pop culture figures into parodic public art memes. His most famous one involves Banksy’s signature rat stencil with Tom Hanks’ face emblazoned on its head. One of his more recent victims includes President Donald Trump in which the artwork portrays the iPhone’s poop emoji embellished with Trump’s face which he dubs Dump Trump.
After nearly seven years of producing viral street art as Hanksy, Lucas wants to rebrand himself as an artist by using his real name. This pivotal transition in his career coincided with his first showing as Adam Lucas in an exhibit titled, “Some Grow Up, Others Grow Down,” this past November.

What's funny is a lot of ppl in these comments are shitting on him for copying other art and stuff, etc... Which, listen to me. I'm quick to judge artist for doing that because that's all i see in art today. Whether music or design. people who jack from other artist, do a quick change and call it original. This guy can actually paint? you see his line work, and painting directly in this vid and that's takes skill. Compared to other dick's who just photoshop stuff and copy off of others and call it art. It's completely different.

I pursued my art because I saw I was getting reactions. Whether they were good reactions or bad I only saw reaction and realized my art can make some people stop what they are doing by just being myself.

Jean-Michel Basquiat, was already pop art, he just copy his basic composition and reartificial the pop art as his toddler clothe style. On his face you can see how he is not even confident with the "painting" or his work. For those who grew Up in the Steet after going to a Fine arts academy, it took years and have gone to several countries and cities, to paint all over the place to finance your next longing exposition, one or twice a year... This kid is just playing with his parents money.

At least it's a successful portrayal of the gentrification of GRAFFITI under the bullshit guise of "street art".I find it comical how people can appreciate a stencil of a image that was created with digital assistance, and sourcing to produce something unoriginal. Yet will disregard a wild style graffiti piece because it's too far above their heads or they are unwilling to learn to understand it. Even though it takes far more skill, practice, and more physical time at the spot to paint. The risk, skill, and ingenuity can't be touched by any stencil or poster safely assembled in a studio.
