Join Gaius and the Shelter crew as they build three timber frame structures just a few miles from our shop in Woolwich! This project includes a 30' x 32' Timber Frame home connected to a 24' x 24' Timber Frame studio, as well as a 24' x 24' Timber Frame garage. In this episode, Gaius, Ethan, and Gabe give a walkthrough of all three finished structures.

Thank you for making a watchable video. No motion for the sake of motion, no rapid cutting ER nonense, no gimmicky transitions, no constant drone shots for no reason, just telling a story.
Thank you for watching and for the kind words!
Gabe's the reason the rafters were backwards then 🤭 Amazing work. Such a great space
Not 10 seconds in and we're already talking a swing in the bedroom! 😆 No wonder this mode of building and this channel resonates with me so much! Very awesome guys!
Thank you for watching!
These videos are just amazing. Thank you all for taking the time to talk through your builds. One day I hope to build a home with your team.
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words!
There's little I could add to many of the excellent comments, save that Dewey speaks volumes....and not by barking. It says a huge amount about the company and the work environment when there's a well-behaved and happy dog being part of the team.
Give him a hug from me!
Regarding hiding the spalting on that timber, I personally prefer seeing that sort of thing. Gives it character
Thank you for allowing us to come along. I definitely enjoyed watching. We are anticipating building a barn in a month or so.
Thank you for following along, best of luck in your build!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching every video of this build. I want a 24x36, with a higher pony wall on the upper floor, with the upper floor being only 12x24 with the downstairs living space open to the top. You’ve got me dreaming!
please do more houses! i absolutely love this, i dont have the ability to take your course yet but watching these builds gets me by until i do. cant wait to see more
Thank you very much! We absolutely plan to
Would love to see a tour of the finished house.
for such a big investment in time and planning great to see such care and commitment to Quality
Thank you Dana!
Picks the most beautiful wood in the house and says "Like this- normally you wouldn't want to see this."
These walk-throughs are the best. I really enjoy hearing the thought process!
Nice work by the entire team. Looking forward to the next series.
I wouldn't close off a single thing if I built one of these homes. Maybe the bathrooms. I might close off a bathroom. Or, even better, build a timber frame outhouse and connect it to the house via the zipline for the winter months.
Zipline is essential
Great work guys! Love the double ridge and dormer upstairs.
Thank you Brady!
Love these so much, hopefully I will be able to take the course sometime, so much I know and nobody does anything timber frame here
I'd love to see a video about the different foundations and the situations in which you would use certain foundations for timber frame builds. I see allot of concrete pads but no explanation of what's beneath. And are concrete post feet acceptable? I've done a lot of research and the opinions on this are so differential that it's overwhelming.
I loved this series! Thank the crew for putting up with whatever it took to make this happen. This is absolutely great content. Period.
We love making this content and hope to continue producing it at this level!
Beautiful building. Loved watching the construction
This was awesome thanks for taking us along on the journey of this build! Just completed both the online courses and I gotta say watching this build was so inspiring!
Wow - great video and beautiful craftsmanship. Thanks.
Stunning!
Great job guys.
Awesome, as always!
Thank you!
Super series. Thanks very much guys!
Thank you for watching!
It would be nice to see it complete finished…..
Are the rafters from the dormer and the roof lapped on the ridge? That's an interesting junction.
Noice! We hope to use your teachings to build an octagon structure surrounded by earth bags that will be flood/ fire and hurricane resistant. Have you planned/built any earth bag, timber frame, sip hybrids? Keep up the good work! I love those cheeks, they really expand the volumetric experience of the space 😂 👍😎 STOC
🙌🙌
🙌
nice.
Great job, really enjoyed the series! How will the exterior be waterproofed?…im assuming a typical home wrap and taped seems. I’m also assuming you guys can order the sips panels with Huber zip sheathing which would make waterproofing faster. Also curious if you have ever done a blower door test on a build? Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately Zip System sheathing is only available in 8' lengths, and we often need seamless panels up to 24' so it is not an option. It would be great if it were available! We don't blower door test because there is still so much work to do after we leave that involves roof and wall penetrations, the results would not be very accurate........and in this case we did not install windows!
What does Gabe mean when he says (at 22:45) "coming back to tie the posts down" ?
Thanks very much for this video, great work.
Very beautiful home, congratulations on your work here. Can you tell me, if cutting all of the beams for the home took about six worker months, about what would it have taken if it had been done in pine?
Pine timbers shave about 15% of the cutting time compared to hemlock.
What happens with the moisture that is accumulated inside the walls as the house heats up and cools down? Doesnt the insulation you choose trap that inside the wall?
I was under the Impression that one of the Benefits to Timber Fram Construction was the possibility of having very open floor plans....
Am I mistaken?
what is the longest span do you build? to lessened the the post inside the living area, so you have more of an open space? thanks
We are able to create almost any sized span via truss systems, steel integration and utilization of glulam.
How does the electrical look? Is it at plain sight or hidden? How does that work on these timber frame type homes?
The SIPs we install on the exterior of the frame contain horizontal and vertical wire chases making for a grid work!
Does a barn house in Wisconsin sound intriguing? 🤔
Seems it would be easier to prime and paint the ceiling drywall before installing the panels.
Who do you use for SIPS?
With the garage what kind of garage doors can you install since the corners are being obstructed by the supports?
A 7'x9' overhead door will just fit in there. Some of our customer also install sliders or swinging doors in uninsulated buildings like this garage-gives a more barn like appearance.
Sill of the door? Would that be what we flat landers call the threshold?
It's what you step over to get out to the door yard! (The threshold).
7:25 Ironic to hear those timbers being 'undesirable' as those individual anomalies are exactly what I want to have in my home project.
I need to find where to get 2x6 T&G in my area, I am obsessed
We really like it, it also installs relatively easily
How is the electrical installed?
Hi Gaius, Any video on youtube don't shoot the timber frame post details attachment to OSB floor or Concrete floor since there are different ways of doing this. Some of them are using sill plates some of them are directly attaching to concrete . Can you please kindly shoot some details of this . How can we attach a timber post to concrete block stem wall foundation ? Everything is clear but not the post connection to any type of floor structure. :( I appreciate your efforts and very happy to watch your videos . Thanks
Hi Tora-we have two videos on this topic-'How to Attach a Timber Frame to a Concrete Foundation (Part 1&2). Link here: czcams.com/video/eGWcSJXOzPU/video.html. These videos just show a few ways, there many more. In your case, (in very generic terms) if you are using a block wall, you would run rebar from the footing up through the block core, then fill the block cores with concrete and install one of the post bases shown in the video. Hope this is helpful/useful.
@@ShelterInstitute thanks for your answer , i had seen these videos already , you say in a video that it can change if the weather is hurricane and by code needs fastening the post to floor , then if it is raised floor and needs hurricane(or earthquake) how then you connect post to floor ? with metal fsteners to raised wood osb floor ? and how ? with concrete floor it is ok with metal fasteners to concrete but with osb floor ? thanks a lot
What are the green sip panels? Why are there a couple of them?
When OSB is manufactured, it often sits outside for a while before shipping; the entire outside of the stack is sprayed with paint to give it some protection-the green sheets happened to be on top of the stack when it got sprayed.
@@ShelterInstitute I thank you for your response. You guys need to open up more spots for your in person classes. I can't believe your 2023 year is all filled up
Getting that kinky play in a swing bed
Gotta hate OSB's and all that foam. A house should not be a plastic bag. Glue and foam has no place in a healthy house made from pure breathable materials. Maybe even the US will realise that someday ;-) Kudos on the series though, very well made.
why dont you leave a 1 inch gab between the house and deck ,so moisture can drain down between rather than a 6 inch step ,it would flow better at same level ,and not be a trip hazard ,
Whens the next one?
We'll get another series out ASAP!
Schade, erst eine gute Zimmererarbeit leisten und dann alles mit Sondermüll dämmen 😞
A cup of coffee or (a joint, no wait, cant say that....) a glass of whiskey =]
It would be a shame to furnish this house.
