- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring The Pope’s Exorcist, the recently released supernatural horror, based on the life works of Father Gabriele Amorth, a renowned Catholic priest and chief exorcist appointed by the Diocese of Rome.
Starring Russel Crowe as the titular exorcist, Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe and Franco Nero, it follows Gabriele in a fictional tale as he attempts to rid a child of demonic possession. Along the way, he unlocks dark secrets about the Vatican that threaten to destabilise the fragile balance between good and evil.
Directed by Julias Avery, the piece of revisionist history essentially encompasses Gabrielle’s lifelong struggle to validify the need for exorcisms in the modern age.
In this video we’re going to explore the story, the real-life Father Gabriele Amorth, the church’s dark history during the many inquisitions, in addition to the demon he is forced to confront.

The demon made one mistake: it went up against Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Rookie mistake

He will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.

"The church sent their holy gigachad"
I'm dead.
I always love it when he makes jokes in just a formal voice
@Adrian Valladares Learn to spell for Christ's sake. That said, you have a good point.
I thought that holy gigachad was Doomguy, The Ultimate Exorcist.
HOLY GIGACHAD is
@@LockandLoad79 That and Doomguys holy double barrel shotgun with +10 to kicking daemonic butt, yeah?
It's nice to hear him state that most "possessions" are actually mental illness. Really wish there was more emphasis on that fact
Well considering legit possession cases do not exist it's rather clear-cut on cause determination.
coz all of them are fakes
@@RuSosan exactly
@Cain ! yes of course, but unfortunately there are a lot of people that will put trust in their faith/fears/superstition before seeking actual professional help.
It's entertainment. It doesn't need to be 100% factual or lecture people.
I was wondering whether Russell Crowe could act with an Italian accent without it sounding corny. Your review makes me want to take a leapt of faith and give the film a watch.
Top 5 movies in my book
Watch it! Great film
I just watched with the same reservation. He did well!
I think it’s my favorite Crowe character. The movie had absolutely everything one expects from an exorcist movie. I’ve seen about every one made and Crowe definitely played my favorite of the priests. The character felt fleshed and real.
His Italian was awful at times, but i expected it to be way worse.
3:15 Correction: all exorcists are priests but not all priests are exorcists, exorcists must go through additional training.
except for ed warren, he was the only non-priest that the vatican allowed to perform exorcisms but i think he still needed a priest with him while performing the exorcism
wrong. not all exorcists are priest. some are trained in different ways within the church, without taking the oath.
@@9razzler9 The official Rite of Exorcism is very clear about who can perform exorcisms: “A priest-one who is expressly and particularly authorized by the Ordinary [local bishop].”This means that no lay person and no priest not so authorized can perform this reserved Rite.
Moreover, the Rite mentions that the priest “must be properly distinguished for his piety, prudence, and integrity of life. He should fulfill this devout undertaking in all constancy and humility… he ought to be of mature years, and revered not alone for his office but for his moral qualities.”
In fact, exorcism existed way before the catholic religion, so nowadays you have to be a priest, but in the ancient times it was not the same.
@@marcnicolet2092 exactly. every faith has some sort of exorcism rite. Even the Native Americans have prayers to cast out evil spirits. That alone itself proves that evil exists and is universal.
I actually enjoyed this movie 😬 I loved Crowe’s take on being a priest and he made me laugh a few times. It was entertaining, not necessarily scary or creepy but definitely fun to watch. The ending felt rush but it was decent nonetheless!
Movies are not scary if you watched too many horror films. I haven't been scared watching a movie since the 80s. I remember when I was a kid and I would wrap a blanket around my neck at night so no one could slice my throat while I was asleep. They used to be scary, but when you grow up and find out there's real things to be scared of these movies lose their effect. Still a damn good movie though 👌
When I first saw this trailer. I immediately thought, “This is going to be a great video by Niat!”.
And now here we are. So hyped! Thank you Niat!
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@filmcomicsexplained I loved the video. Gracias por su tiempo amigo. 😎
Who is that Niat you keep referring to? Nobody lives here by that name....
Weird how exorcisms in movies are scarier than "real" exorcisms.
Movies make it scarier. IRL it is chilling
@@TheSunMoon IRL it's nothing more than somebody having an autistic fit as somebody with brain damage pretends to cure them, instead of actually taking them to be sorted out
It’s true. I mean in the footage of the “real” ones, everyone has their Sunday best on. If I were possessing someone, I’d constantly be pooping my pants and making things real gross.
VFX LOL
Exorcisms are not real and neither are demons😂😂 but it is pretty cool stuff to see👌🏿 humanity can be absolutely insane sometimes it's interesting to see how far mental issues can go
"Did he allow that?" Legit cracked me up XD I wish this was done as a comedy. Russel Crowe would've been hilarious.
I keep hearing "He'll defriend you." When they say, "You know what will happen if the devil possess the Pope's Exercist?"
Like the devil is using the exercist as a stepping stool to meet the Pope.
I love when characters outright state the premise of the movie. “Imagine what would happen if a demon possessed the soul of the pope’s exorcist”

Russell Crowe, the GOAT.
Exorcism movies, like this one, are interesting for me to watch. Some of these really show the acting range of the involved actors/actresses, production quality, and the execution of storytelling.
I loved the kids performance, but it's hard to tell if it's real or cg.
This movie could've been better. Honestly the best demonic possession films are The Exorcist, and the first two Conjuring films
Evil dead franchise as well .
Ok I’ve come across a movie I feel is very deserving of one of your videos, it’s called “Frailty” starring the late Bill Paxton and Mathew McConaughey, it’s about a boys father who gets a message from god to destroy Demons (people) and his son coming to grips with his father’s insanity, really underrated film, and the way it ends makes the who movies worth watching again, please at least look into it. Please like this comment to get it some attention, thanks
Frailty is a great movie. I was in awe during the last scene wherein his father really sees the evil thing people did
While I am hardly religious... I've seen things I cannot explain and acts of evil I wish I hadn't.
I was born to Catholic parents, baptized and confirmed. I haven't been an "active" catholic for years...
However I will always remember my mother's words. Forget the dogma and do's and don't's of it. If there's truly a loving and fair almighty being judging us all. It's better to be a just, righteous and moral man and find out the almighty doesn't exist than be an evil man and find out he does....
Give us some examples?
have you had objects move on their own? have you had things strangely stop working when they have worked perfectly fine? have you heard voices and seen apparitions?
I'm just merely curious
Another great video JAM packed with info and just very well put together a very solid movie break down 💯
This quote may come from a movie but its a good quote nonetheless:
"Its either all a joke or none of it is."
It’s all Fun and Games Until the Demon Checks In
It’s all a joke. Fun to watch tho! Ha!
@@JohnDoe99827 it isn’t.
when i watch this movie, at first i didnt know if this was supposed to be a parody. the humour tend to poke fun at exorcism itself and the tone seems abit mixed and confusing.
also something i noticed with exorcism movies...if the demon is strong enough to use telekinesis to throw things around, why not...like i dunno explode the arteries in the exorcist's body, or use a sharp object to slice their throat, like why even allow yourself to be tormented by the exorcist? lol it's always so weird and nonsensical to me. all the demons do are talk and act like a petulant child being forced to take their meds.
I loved it!!! Thank you for the review and. In depth breakdown of the business and some of his history. I’d love to see this succeed to a level where a sequel is put into action. My only criticism, could’ve been a bit more scary &/or horrifying. It had me on the edge of my seat but never made me yell out loud(which is something I do at these movies lol)
I like the possessed kid. Great acting 👏
Watched this movie yesterday night with the wife, great movie!!! Was awesome to see Russell Crowe in a horror movie.
always look forward to your videos, seems im super early this time

Love all your explanations. Here's to many more!
Awesome, thank you! More to come Ry :)
I went to this movie with 0 expectation and came out very entertained. One thing I like the most is the other priest is useful. Most of the time only the main character has the common sense and other people are useless at best, or even making things more difficult, which is very dumb and frustrating. Definitely one of the best exorcism movies in my book.
I agree. This movie was very good, but I almost didn't watch it.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊 I highly recommend you do a video on Renfield, the vampire horror comedy film starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his assistant of the same name.

Just mention the name of Sam and Dean Winchester and the demon will flee immediately!
All Hail the badassedness of the Winchester boys!
Depends on who it is doing the possessing. Crowley and Lucy would probably be waiting with bells on for Moose and Squirrel, lol.
You could also ring up Crowley or Rowena
That or the low level demon will think they can take down the Winchesters only meet their end at the barrel of the colt, Sam's knife, or Cas's blade. Because as we know Crowly was the only one to take them seriously.
Supernatural what a great show!
I’m not much of a religious person but this seems very cool as a film
Great Video! I always watch and enjoy your videos, FilmComicsExplained- Number 1. Can you make a video on "The Exorcism of God" also ? Thanks
Asmodeus is not a demon but one of the deadly sins specifically lust being the leader of the angels that created the giants and monsters that were wiped out during the great flood
Along with cute animals and babies and things
Demons are literally fallen angels. In catholicism, all non-human spirits are either angels or fallen angels which are also called demons. Asmodeus may rule over the sin of lust but he is THE demon who rules over lust. All angels have functions and roles. Demons also still have roles after their fall. When it comes to angels who stayed with God, one example is Raphael whose purpose is to heal or teach medicine to humans.
Wow ok I may have to check this out, bring on the VCU (Vatican Cinematic Universe) 😂

A not well known fact: Fr. G Amorth was a very humorous man.
I love this movie, the jokes are great, the characters feel real and relatable, and the scares are good. It's a movie that leaves me smiling after every watch. Now I just need to read the books, I hear their good.

Great explanation, after watching i needed a bit of clarity which you provided...👍🏾👏🏿🙏🏾
Keep ‘em coming
On the one hand I really hope they do a couple sequels following the two priest visiting the other locations, but I don’t want them to risk making a mockery of the man behind the story. But a film series about exorcist hunting down locations of fallen angels sounds pretty entertaining an adventure
i agree, id love a mini series tbh, the cop against demons is so cool that i dont even mind that its not historically accurate

The movie is really good. I don’t understand why this movie is not blockbuster. If I’m not mistaken there’s 199 demons out there that priest need to exterminate or need exorcism. So basically there’s part 2
This was a decent movie. Only issue was Russell on that small ass bike. That was funny as hell

I just watched this movie since it came into my country's Netflix a few days ago. I actually enjoyed it as much as I'm not the biggest fan of the plot. Crowe and the rest of the cast did a great job. 3:00 I don't want to question the work of the priest, but the fact that ordinary people are sitting there with him, who have no idea what the devil is capable of, says something.
You don't need to worry, that clip was taken from a phony documentary saying demons are real, asking credible professionals (e.g. doctors) if possessions are real and heavily twisting their responses, with an ending saying despite filming absolutely everything they turned their camera off and suddenly were immediately attacked by demons. Furthermore, the clips used of the 'possession' are edited themselves to make them seem scarier, with the original footage just showing a woman acting crazy without the distorted screaming
As a Irish Catholic, Demons terrify me more than anything.
Why? They don't exist.
@@davidarbogast37 Brah, they said the same thing about germs and just because you can't see something doesn't mean they doesn't exist.
@@davidarbogast37cmon man you don’t have to do that
Come on now folks, there is no objective evidence for anything supernatural and especially not any entity of any sort. Demons are just machinations of the fearful and gullible as well as those who seek to use the concept to control people such as the case of the Roman Catholic Cult, where the idea of possession seems to be an epidemic because of the insane influence of their delusional religious culture. I mean, you're all welcome to go ahead and evidence or prove the existence of demons but I doubt you can. No one has theoughout the entirety of human existence. 🤷♂️
@@IrishTechnicalThinker yeah but see there was and is actually evidence for germs where there is none for demons. 🤷♂️

strange how the catholic church can battle demons/evil and apparently do a great job yet seemingly find it impossible and beyond their abilities to stop the inherent, and frequent, cases of child/sexual abuse commited by their non demon very much human employees .. tell me im wrong

As much as you go to enjoy an entertaining movie, these days seems many of them wanna shove their ideas and message in your face. I'll take a good entertaining movie like this over many of the crap out now. Also, I know horror has to have a little gore in it. But it is possible to make a good scary movie with out it also. This doesn't seem too gore filled. Definitely adding to watch list. Great vid again!
You realise creative work always says something, its not shoved in your face its called basic comprehension
Every movie has ideas you buffoon
He is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And he will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
What do you think about exploring Am from I have no mouth and I must scream?
The demon said, "We wanted our freedom before you got here." This statement intrigued me. What happened before Adam and Eve? When did Lucifer plan his cue? Are you allowed to ask questions like this? About what happened? Seems like a perfect opportunity and probably wouldn't take much insincere flattery on your part to learn something no one would ever be privy to. Fascinating.
I find myself wondering sometimes if our ancestors really did know some things that we just pass off as silly superstition. Evil is real but I don't know where it comes from.
From humans .
It's usually trauma, mental illness, phobias, head injuries at a young age, curiosity or bad drugs.
Without a doubt, thays why people took religion uber seriously , and why there's so many history regarding the angels and the archdevils because these thins really did happen

Honestly, as a historian, I would take what happened during the Spanish Inquisition with a grain of salt. It was actually nowhere near as bad as we are told it was, but the reason we have this idea that the Spanish Inquisition was so horrific and awful is because we were all suckered in by Protestant propagandists from 500 years ago.
With the invention of the printing press, Protestant reformers decided to launch a smear campaign against the Spanish. And it was so effective that we are still feeling its effects centuries later. That isn’t to say that people weren’t tortured. Yes, there were people who died under torture or even burned at the stake. Yet the targets were Jews and Muslims who converted to Christianity, but were suspected of secretly retaining their old faiths. So, why weren’t the numbers of deaths so large as we believe? That’s because many of the Jews and Muslims who lived in Spain escaped persecution by fleeing across the straits to North Africa, where they had family and relatives there. For, in Islam, Jews are considered “People of the Book”, and could practice their faith as long as they pay the Jiziya tax. The Jews living in Morocco found professions as merchants, seafarers and even as privateers.
For more information on this, feel free to consult the Extra History series on Jewish Pirates.

it was a great movie with beautiful locations... usually not into exorcism movies but this was was top notch. Russel Crowe gave amazing performance. it's not easy to do fake Italian accent whole movie so good and not so cringe. he really nailed it and the unique personality of this character.
Loved Russel in unhinged and virtuosity
"Right up your Abbey " I love it .
The most underrated exorcism movie gotta be The Sin Eater.
I enjoyed it. It's obvious that they're trying to launch an alternative to The Conjuring/ Insidious franchise.
I feel like Russell Crowe is getting more and more religious with his movies as he ages. Maybe just a trend I noticed.
Man, if someone believes deeply enough, maybe an exorcism can help them, regardless of what was causing their suffering. I don't know enough about it to say one way or the other, though. Might do more harm than good..🤔
There's been research done, and in the majority of cases it definitely does more harm. Unfortunately :/
@@Mindboggles Yeah, I'd definitely be concerned about it if it were a loved one.
Any exorcist will tell you the worst thing they can do is give an exorcism to a mentally ill person..
@@Mindboggles not really, but ok.
@@blitzphantom9488 The illusion that exorcism works on people with a disease experiencing supposed symptoms of possession can be attributed to the placebo effect. However, there are 370,000 reported cases of people killed during exorcism and another 310,000 reported injuries. These numbers are an underestimate as there are still unreported fatal cases in many rural areas of developing countries where mental illness is stigmatized. Scientifically, demonic possession is not a valid psychiatric or medical diagnosis recognized by either the DSM-V or ICD-10.
That exorcism video with that woman was cringey to watch. The Call of Duty zombie sound effects just made me laugh
Being a Christian myself, learning more about Catholicism, I always find these types of media interesting. I believe demons are real, but I can’t say I’ve ever had direct contact with one. Movies about exorcisms often make demons seem so unreal that nobody takes them seriously, but this one being directly from the priest’s perspective makes a much more compelling film

In the real world the "possessed" would be far better served with mental health workers. Not some priest with a history of making up stories about how great he is at removing demons
And those that have been helped by exorcism?..
Yeah, Dr. Money was great.
Yes, because public mental health workers are known to be angels.
He sure does love fightin’
That's all I heard in my head while I watched the movie last night 😂 C'mon Tugger 🤣
just saw it, dont know why they chose to go R, it couldve easily been pg13 with a few minor edits. Wouldve helped with the box office. the movie i think tries to be more spiritual than horror which ehhh i wouldve suggested they didnt bother, movies like this dont make people more spiritual, its all for entertainment value. No one dies in this film, which makes it hard to find it very scary.
This movie was more funny than scary. I had a fun time, no doubt there.
It's like a parody of the late Father Amorth. Distasteful or not, eh I think it was alright.
While I agree that the majority of possessions are cases of mental illness I do believe in the existence of demons, possession, heaven, hell, God, the devil, and exorcism.
Like all things, while real life is never quite as stylish or black and white as the movies, there’s still shreds of truth that lie beneath these films
Such a good view. Loved Thai movie
