Hi Emily, This morning I send you an email for help and just now I see this video you made which is about exactly some of the issues I am still battling with. The Universe is keep sending me back to you 🙂- I work with so many different vocals, different genres like opera voices, pop and more, and of course every voice is different, and every recording sound different and need to be treated maybe in a different way. As I mentioned in my email it is very confusing for me personally when some experts I see on you tube who seem to have decades of experience as it seems use very expensive microphones, neumann to name one out of the many and then do exactly what you showed in the video killing the sound of the expensive mic and making it sound the vocal is recorded with a $100 microphone. It boggles me and this can't be right I think, however, I try all these things there most of the people show the same vocal chain, combination of plug ins - and what you showed is even not so much compared to what I've seen where the main track is filled with plug ins but also the vocal bus is maxed out with more plugs like EQ, compressors, effects and more. I tried all and it didn't really gave me that vocal sound I hear in the movies, that beautiful wide vocal, that sounds so smooth and pleasant to the ears. Even people who are not great singers and did a singing course for the movie sound amazing even I can hear technically what they do and what they have, still, it doesn't bother me and I know it is because of how they recorded it and processed it. That is what I want too - how do they do that? I am sure not by adding 30 plug ins...If they can, I must be able to get close to that right? Some mention a lot of reverb and delay, however, that doesn't seem in my case make the vocal sound wider in the speakers or have that feeling of freedom - it just washes the vocal in a too big space or it is bouncing around because of a noticable delay effect and when I use a widening plug in the vocal sounds double which is horrible in the genre I am focused on - but I hear in the movies, on records of artists like Bocelli, Tom Jones, Roberto Alagna, all I miss in vocal recording is there, that means it is possible because the same sound I hear in every movie, in every great album and with them I not hear an overly used reverb sound or a delay bouncing the vocal all over the place or that the vocal sound harsh, in your face and make your toes squeeze because the vocal sounds unpleasant - it sounds warm, balanced, pure, direct, where I know they added reverbs and delays, and even when phrases sung by the singer sound not pitched, it still is pleasant to listen to...That is what I want to learn, know, how to get that - how do these guys create that kinda pleasant vocal sound and have it sit so beautifully present in the mix. You just hear the space and the singer between the speakers instead of a mono in the face fat or thin sound 🙂 - I just want to learn that and in 2024 not want to continue spending money on more and more stuff. More then half I bought I not even use I noticed lol...Just wanted to share...and need help....

Neat idea. I mix dialogue all day, so being tought some tricks for mixing vocals is always appreciated. The saturation bit might be interesting for VO. I've always leaned more towards using compressors and eq to bring that kind of colour, such as the 1176 and LA2A. It seriously never occured to me to treat saturation and compression effects as send effects though. Thanks for the inspiration.
