If you had "enough" FU Money, what would you do?

  • @PrincessZelda609

Creating an FU Fund was one of the best financial decisions I have EVER made. It allowed me to leave a very corrupt agency that was worsening my anxiety and overall mental health. I resigned on Feb 2nd as I worked on securing my next job, a federal position in another state. I just received that start date, April 8th. Until then, I've been chillin'. While my son is in school I prepare my move, work out, binge watch tv shows, and play video games. I want to be in the right headspace for my next position, and being able to afford to sit out from work for 2 months and mentally get myself back together has been a blessing!

FU provides UF (unlimited freedom!). We have about five years of FU readily accessible…but we own the business so we’d be saying FU to ourselves. I also like to call it our smooth operator fund since it smooths out the road when the investments get volatile (like 2022). I hope Sade approves.

Gotta love that! Where do you keep the 5 years of cash?

@@MarriageKidsandMoney Ah great question! We keep a good chunk in our friend Ally for quick access and the overflow is in a state and federal muni bond fund at Vanguard. We're in a high tax bracket so keeping taxable income low is a goal of ours.

He’s really describing an emergency fund. True FU money is when you can ALWAYS say FU, not just once or twice.

For me, 24 months expenses would be a practical place to start. Sounds like a lot but it gives someone two years to reset.

I like it! All cash or some investments?

@@MarriageKidsandMoney I'd probably go with three months cash and the remaining 18 in I-Bonds. Naturally this requires a lot of laddering up and advance planning that could take several years.

I have only 2 months of emergency fund of my living expenses, however, march 2023 will reach Lean FIRE. Since I have been living frugally almost cheap for damn 10 years I will enjoy my paycheck for 6 months and then will work on increase my emergency fund to 1 year worth of cash.

I’d like to see an episode on buying health insurance, the costs involved and why it is so expensive while so many people pay nothing. I lost my corporate job and the wife works for a small firm and her group benefits weren’t affordable so my son and I had to get pvt insurance.

Yes!! No one discusses health insurance. Self-insuring a family of 4 can cost upwards of $1200/month. So any FU budget needs to include health insurance costs.

This isn't fu money. This is recession proofing. FU money buys a house, shht box bullet proof car, with the rest invested to pay taxes, repairs, and hopefully utilities. After that all you need is food, gas and hobbies.

  • @mabuhayproductionltd3627

Dangerous if the Wife had a nice FU savings, it might as well be You that gets the FU Note and has to split everything i too. I have seen it happen, suddenly FU/FIRE money droped by 50%, expenses to a new single house/flat increased a lot, cost for psychology help cost a lot ect. They whole plan is set back many years. You are on your own. good luck
