    They need to target various audiences: The Guitar or Prince, the Ballads of Prince, the Funk of Prince, the HipHop of Prince, the 🤘🏽 Anthems of Prince, etc.
    Add some extended versions, some vault material, etc. See what performs, release additional volumes for those who perform. Hire me to do this for them in the future. :)

      SOTT is my favorite too. It's also the last Prince albums I bought until he passed away. I had stopped listening to secular music all together and went Christian/Contemporary Gospel only for about 15 yrs. I had no idea what Prince or anyone secular artists were doing for quite a while. I still have a lot of catching up to do!

    I always thought TGE was a casualty of his tug-o-war with WB. and it never got a fair shake. Maybe that's why they chose so many from that album. At any rate, great review!

    I agree with u! It kinda feels like it's just a snack before the meal so to speak. They could have chose some better songs, it was thrown together, felt like a money maker for the record companies as a way to make up for their losses incurred once Prince took ownership of his own stuff. If u r a new Prince fan, idk if this really gives the feel of wanting more,if u r an original 4ever fan,it was cool to hear some songs I hadn't heard in a long time,but,I think they could have done better since they have had over 2 years to re-lay tracks down. I suppose it's a teaser,but, honestly,who wants to keep waiting? We were ready for new music,the fans need to hear it!! Thanks for your review,glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking it could have been better,..let's face it...it can't suck no matter what because it is Prince of course 💜, peace and be wild

      The Gold Experience was Prince's last truly great record, imo. Not that there weren't plenty of really good ones after that. But I always felt Gold was the last time he really pushed the envelope as well as cranked the guitars.

    I wasn’t expecting these albums to be released actually, I am a member of a streaming service and just opened Prince’s profile and when I saw the albums I was... OK wait a minute! I was completely shocked to see Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic which is my favorite album of all time, I was amazed but pretty dizzy tho. Anyways, this compilation is really good! Cause if you notice the Gold Experience is NOT available in its full on these streaming services again, pretty good release most of all due to tracks like U make my sunshine, Endorphinemachine, The Rainbow Children tracks, etc. I would have loved to have The Most Beautiful Girl in the World released in that album...

    Hey PF! I am enjoying listening to Anthology but have only gotten to 'Chaos and Disorder' so far. Looking forward to the rest of the album. On another note, I have decided to get a new hobby; bass guitar 🎸. I'm 60 now and ever since high school when I really began listening to music, funk has been keeping me strong and seeing me through this thing called life. Always wanted to learn bass but now I'm about to have much more time on my hands(retiring), and figure I should do something on my bucket list. Thanks for the Prince channel. The Best Prince Bassist segment further solidified my dedication to the funk. Btw, imo you really look like a grown-up version of the little guy playing Young Prince in the Musicology video. Any chance it's you? You are loved and keep up the good work!

    I would like to see someone step forward and give some sort of explanation as to the thought process that's going into these type projects. Especially if this will be the norm for "new" releases. Not that I'm saying we're owed an explanation but rather an assurance that there is some thought being put into a compilation like this. It could give old music new life, IMO I think I heard there's a Rolling Stone review, which I haven't read yet, that could be interesting. Billboard may also have something to add.
    I haven't listened to this yet so I value your thoughts, thanks 💜 I think I may wait on the hard/physical copies of this and all the other re-released.

    Spot on review PF. Thank you. Totally in agreement about the Crystal Ball tracks. Although brilliant tunes, they don't really belong with this compilation as they are 80s tracks released in 97. As a lover of TGE I'm okay with it being TGE heavy although it's definitely a missed opportunity to add in more from other albums. Maybe TGE is being slated as the first physical release of his post Warner work so they are looking to drum up interest in it? Who knows. Anyway a great review as always 💜

    I have this weird love/hate relationship with Prince's music. Like right now, I'm glad they released more of his music to streaming services since the actual album can be pricey as hell. I feel this anthology could have had better arrangement of the tracks but I think this is a good set for people who want to hear his different stuff and leave the 'Purple Rain' style of his earlier stuff

    I find it's disappointing... not that I, personally, needed all the tracks from all the albums, but the word anthology could be more aptly changed to compilation. I was wondering what they would include from The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse as some great tracks are on both of those that have seen very little play except of course by die hards like some of us. I'd love to see an album tracklist if that's possible... At any rate, Thanks for the review, it was quite helpful.

    I got the Anthology threw a streaming service but I also have all the individual albums that I downloaded. I have a couple of questions that I raised in my head. One being, Who from Sony was in charge of what song from which CD was selected to be on the Anthology recording? And what would live to see them do is this, put out more alive shows not only on CD, but DVD as well, have or has anyone asked or said anything about doing this? I got to see PRINCE like 5 time's if my memory is right, and I think that Prince in the studio in absolutely amazing but when he was performing on stage, it was like I was in a whole different world, he invited the fans to his world, and to me that's what is great about seeing some bands or individual performers was and is awesome at it. But I have had the chance to listen to the Anthology, I would have done 40 tracks, and do it like his greatest hits CD, and just take a couple of songs off of each CD I believe that it would have been better. Thanks for reading this and MAY YOU LIVE TO SEE THE DAWN!!

  • @VagabondMorrison

    I would bet the most likely the song selection was decided by analytics based on streaming services and what was the most popular songs listened to.

  • @orbsyorb544

    I agree that some of the songs I would have NOT chosen and there placement of others songs was STRANGE! And this release should have been a double album. Some one else in the comments mention that the word Anthology should have been change to compilation, I agree!! I too would like to a tee shirt with that logo they created for the Album. Perhaps a Album and tee shirt combo pack release, (that is something Prince would have done) I would purchase that quick, fast, and in a hurry! I really hope that Prince’s estate folks are going on to yours and other social media sites and are reading these comments and listening to what the Prince community is saying, they could as well as us, benefit from what is being said about what we all would like have in our collections of Prince music and memorabilia. Thanks for the review, as always great work PF.

    Wow, finally an great Purple Funk release, will be getting this in collection, to get the unreleased cuts when it gets to disk, there is an theory behind 37, seven days earth was made, three days victory, it is symbolism and numbers, Prince was into a lot of symbolism in his music and artwork, movies, vids now after two years the music is getting released there is an rumor that Jayz is going to be working on new Prince album in 2019, my bass is really throwing down now on the Purple funk, Prince was more likely that since all this music is released take another listen there is an a lot on message here, main one is March, which is about Freedom the dawn is here,

    For once, I have a disagreement. But it’s probably because it’s my favorite Prince song. I think Dinner With Delores still has a place. But I do agree that it would’ve been nice to see some more material from the other albums. Either way I think it’s all good because this will help the public view of Prince break out of the 80s bubble (as wonderful as that bubble is)

    The biggest gap is what was taken from Emancipation. It's always been a criminally neglected album, IMO much better than Gold. Somebody's Somebody, Holy River, Sex in the Summer, One Kiss at a Time, Soul Sanctuary, Emale, My Computer, Joint 2 Joint, I Can't Make U Love Me if You Don't ...and more...are better than what appears on the anthology. The other single selections from the other albums were actually great picks. I prefer Colonized Mind off Lotusflower which is a funk masterpiece. It's mindboggling how much they put on this anthology yet what remains.

Fans know better and I trust u would have done this comp. justice. But I guess I should be happy they’re doing something right??? 1 nite alone is my soundtrack for the month 💜🎶 thanks for another insightful well planned and thought out review !!!!

    Thanks for drawing my attention to this album😀and for hi lighting the tracks from each album, it sounds great. It’s good to hear your opinion and I am surprised there are six tracks from the Gold Experience, although these commercial tracks go well with the less commercial tracks and it’s a very popular album that wasn’t publicised much at the time . The only track that seems out of place for me is P Control.

    I absolutely love the logo...yours and the new Anthology cd 😘...hoping to get a tshirt soon...so I felt there were a couple tracks that didn't fit just because I believe we should be listening to with the entire CD if we're going to listen to those tracks...West and Xpedition are the ones I'm talking about. Honestly I wish ALL of the songs were chronologically ordered but I think instrumentals should be kept together. Maybe I'm wrong.

  • @sperrotta91
    @sperrotta91 Před 6 lety +1

    Like many Prince fans eager to see his mid-to-late career period reappraised, I have a lot to say about this compilation and it's not good folks. As I said on Prince's last.fm page, it's an absolute mess of a compilation and an opportunity blown. Ideally, we'd be seeing a triple album: one covering The Gold Experience to Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic or The Rainbow Children, one covering the piano vocal/instrumental jazz excursions and one covering Musicology to 20Ten... a fourth could account for NPG Music Club releases and also pull from The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse. There is just no way you're doing justice to a fifteen year period during which the artist in question released an average of one or more LPs per year encompassing: double and triple studio albums, several live albums, numerous website-only releases, concept records about proselytizing/religious conversion, 10 minute plus cool jazz workouts... with ONE album! This was done FAR too soon and sloppily. The estate has a LOT to answer for and I would defy ANY real Prince fan not to take issue with this.

  • @corbydaniel4256
    @corbydaniel4256 Před 6 lety +1

    Good review. They didn't edit Eye Hate U for this release. That's the Extended Mix from the Maxi-Single and from the Gold single, which I think is the superior version anyway, because it cuts out the cheesy court room bit. The only track I think they actually edited is that they cut the intro off of P. Control. I wish they had cut the "Prince Esta Muerto" bit off the end of Endorphinmachine, because that shit's not cute anymore. I also wish they'd taken the NPG Operator piece off the end of Gold, because I think the song would be stronger without it.
    My biggest complaint would be that, while I get they wanted to represent each of the albums from the time period, the 14 minute instrumental, West, really breaks the flow of the collection, especially followed immediately with another 8 minute instrumental, Xpedition.

      I'm glad I still have the original CD. I'm becoming more concerned about his works going out of print. His estate is manipulating for money, but Prince really loved his "Purple Family". No one can capture who he really was. I wish some closest to him in music that he loved, trusted & worked with could help direct Prince's musical compilation releases & not just for the money.

    This is the first Prince release that I won't purchase but I did download all the tracks to create a playlist on my phone. I previously bought the very best of as a completest even though I already had all of the tracks.
    I agree the logo is excellent.
    The hate u track is the single edit which was created for radio airplay when it was the lead single for the gold experience album.
    There is a rare existing edit of the work with no speech but I don't believe an edited version was ever created for 1+1 of which a live variant appeared as a b side for the one night alone album if I recollect correctly. The version of Batdance on 4ever was also the single edit.
    My only suggestion on the number 37 is that triple 7 is the media hoax code. Three 7's appear in Bowie's Blackstar video for example, suggesting all was not as it appeared with Bowie at the time ie the appearance of unknown A&R man Jack Stephen on sky news THE NEXT DAY (another Bowie reference, his penultimate album title) Jacks teeth are the giveaway as to his true identity. Prince would have also been 37 years old when he overdosed on 21/04/96.
    Always nice to get a new Prince album though & I still feel the Gold era was one of his strongest.
