  • In this second episode of Pretty Little Belgium I will show you stunning castles, a hidden cabin, a fairy-tale house and I also tried to travel to another time via the dolmen in Wallonia, Belgium. This truly is off the beaten path Belgium! You won't find these locations in the average travel guide books!
Apologies for the annoying sound of my lens. Won't happen again since I now use another one!

A note about Rheinhardstein castle: did you know that this is a very un-historic, "unauthentic" building? Let me explain. It used to be a complete ruin until Professor Overloop decided to rebuild it in the 1970s. Many stones had fallen down the hillside, so he first gad to pick them up and carry them to the top but many stones were simply lacking. He hardly had any plans or documents about how the castle was before it fell into a ruin, so he basically created a fantasy building largely on the basis of his imagination. The interior decoration and furniture too are made of bits and pieces brought together from other places. Funny, isn't it? You'd hardly guess this is the story of Rheinhardstein, given how "authentic" it looks. At the end of the day, I believe Overloop did a great job: although the castle is not materially authentic, morally it is, as it captures the spirit of what a medieval castle is. It is said that King Baudouin/Boudewijn visited the castle some day and Professor Overloop proudly declared to him: "Sire, ceci n'est pas un château, c'est un étandard". Brilliant!

I love discovering such odd beaten random places. I loved that cottage you went to in the beginning and I love the little villages in Europe. The music you’ve used is mind blowing by the way.
