  • Sharing my experience building a custom blade to use while playing some competitive recreational table tennis. I got some ideas and my template from Ross leidy: rossleidy.com/resources/PDFs/s... so check him out. Had a lot of fun making this project and really have enjoyed playing with it as well. A good conversation piece as well. Hope you enjoy the video.

    It's beautiful!!! Awesome work!
I used to use a 10mm blade. Has a thick (8mm) Balsa inner core, and a layer of texalium (fiber glass aluminum), and limba outer veneer. It's one of the fastest rackets ever made.

Nice work! Now we need some slo-mo of the paddle in action!

Hey man, awesome work! What kind of finish did you use on your paddle?

hi.. you can try when cutting the rubber, use balsa wood as base, or polyfoam 5mm, or even a corrugated card board can do the trick. use a sharp cutter (x-acto kinda blade). i tried using cutting mat but not as good as using polyfoam board.

If you want to try to salvage a warped blade or plywood blank microwave it for 30-45 seconds. Use some gloves to try and bend it back to being flat. This works with wood glue not epoxy

Hi mr jody. i still not clear what the caused of wood become curved and how to avoid it (because of my english not good). Are that caused by wood glue, attached veneer in same direction? or something else? i plan to make paddle 7 ply wood with balsa wood 3 mm as core and 6 ply veneer 0.5 mm. please advise and respon my question.thanks

DraSTVlog Channel I would use epoxy over wood glue because it dries harder. Alternating wood grains always seems like a good idea for stability as well. I think the wood glue was what hurt the glue up the most in my opinion.

@@jodyswoodworking5477 thanks for your response and sharing. Very helpful.

DraSTVlog Channel I make some as well. Cross crossing grain is important for vertical and horizontal rigidity overall. Also, the weight comes form handle and blade inner core being a heavy wood. Most blades have a light density core and heavier outer plies. Wood glue is fine and even hide glue is good too. Just depends on the blade. Handles are the hardest to overcome with weight and feeling to obtain

@@kaptivatingstudios676 thanks for your sharing..i still get some problem with soft wood core (like balsa), after add top layers (4-6 ply veneer), the blade still flexible and easy to bending. My experiment using veneer wenge, ebony, and white oax (each have thickness 0.5 mm, core balsa 3-4 mm). May be crossing every layer will help my problem.. Thanks again!!

I’m sorry but I decided to give you a view and disappointment at the lack of build and overkill with narrative. You have to walk the walk and not talk the talk. No one wants to see someone give detailed explanation, they want action not words. Show the process don’t explain it.

And I'm sorry Colin I decided to give your comment a thumbs down due to the lack of not watching the actual video. Had you done that, you wouldn't have put your foot in your mouth. 12:45 among other parts. Explained the process, gave tips AND showed you how he did stuff in the process. Exactly what you criticized him for not doing. SMH.

For Those ppl who are wondering how to cut a rubber perfectly without shreddering, dip your knife in water before cutting. Sometimes we just lick the knife and cut it when there is No water 😂😂😂
