Living rural as a child (farmland in PA), this is NOT how you handle a problem puppy. An ill chicken, a horse perhaps (in a humane manner) - the dog was a purebred I think. I'm sure a shelter could have re-housed it.

I’m a farmer and a republican. Yes, sometimes you have to put down some animals but this is a puppy. It’s not funny. She could have paid for the chickens like I have done in my past when one of my dogs got a chicken. If she didn’t like the dog, then she should have gave him away to a responsible person that could train the dog, not shoot it.

I'm also a republican and a "cat lady" but I'm also fond of dogs. I understand that things are different on a farm or a ranch, but I can't comprehend why she couldn't just rehome the dog. I never thought much about Noem one way or the other, but now... No. Also, the fact that she revealed it with the tone she used shows poor judgment and a lack of understanding of the general public sentiment. Makes me wonder what else she doesn't perceive.

1.) When you are a millionaire, you call a vet to euthanize an animal.
2.) You act like she made a hard choice…she called the dog useless and she said she hated it.
3.) People aggression and animal aggression aren’t the same thing. If the dog bit her while hunting, it most certainly was just too excited. MANY police dogs occasionally bite their handler in the field. Not because they are mean but because they are still young and excited.
She shows no compassion, no guilt and no intelligence. Goodbye.

Don’t make excuses for her. I found a pointer that was turned over to the SPCA for killing chickens. It was adopted by someone who didn’t have animals considered prey. She hated the puppy and thought it was useless and had no utility. Also, it ruined her sad day. Animals are not pets to her so she is detached from them emotionally. I thought highly of her before but now I think she is a cold and heartless. This puppy wasn’t the only animal she killed. Very disturbing.😡

I have had three rejected hunting dogs, which I transitioned to domestic love. Field-breed pups are naturally prey-driven. Trainers all agree you can't trust them without training and age. It was still a puppy, and she had no business hunting while it was too young. Leaving it loose off lease with birds around is her responsibility and a typical outcome of mishandling.

Very well said. My parents own/run an equestrian facility. We've had lots of dogs and have had our share of SOLVEABLE issues with neighbor'sdogs, etc. We just placed a pit bull who went after my brother's cats in a loving home. Even pit bulls can be rehabilitated. And there are PLENTY of homes for dogs with behavior issues -- homes without kids or other pets. There is ALWAYS a solution for saving the LIFE of a PUPPY, especially. This pit bull lives with a single working professional who takes him to work, every day. He is living the life. And she reports that he's well-behaved at work, loves people, avoids cats... 🙃

My puppies killed four chickens on different occasions. I messed up left them outside and the coup was open. They were only 3-4 months old. No way would i let that happen to them. There momma had a close call when she was younger. There dad killed a few when he was young, It happens. Both of them are trusted around them now. If livestock is more important to you than a pet. Dont have a pet thats dumb

If a 12-year-old did what she did to a puppy/dog. The kid would be referred for psychiatric evaluation. I liked this woman up until I heard this story and now, not so much. I just cannot trust a person with such poor judgment, who could’ve given the dog to someone as a pet or she could’ve kept it as a petherself if she wasn’t going to abuse it. It wasn’t she teaching the dog how to hunt pheasant and maybe it got confused and recognized chickens as birds and thought it was being good catching a bird? There’s just too much here that’s disturbing.

@@joemag6032 So far only found ref to him punching cow in the face. If you look at her first memoir and her speeches to NRA she seems very trauma bound to him. She grew up under some cruelty that's for sure, (though she does not see it). I'm still digging for an original ref to the cat story.

I totally agree. I have four dogs and 3 of them are under that age. I don't know that I could shoot any of them for killing chickens, but I have kids and if they posed a threat to one of my children, I could probably do it. We did have a rescue dog that growled when any of the babies came near him, but my husband put the fear of God into him and he'd mostly get up and walk away. But for 7 years we could not get him to stop. So I get the situation, but I totally agree she shouldn't have put it in the book.
